Light Brown Spotting

I posted this on a recent thread, but thought I would start a new discussion to see if anyone has had something similar and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy.

I'm 7 weeks and 3 days pregnant and started spotting very light brown last Wednesday when I was 6 weeks and 5 days. It has been very, very light brown spotting only when I wipe. This morning it was light pink, which made me freak out, and has since gone back to light brown. I am absolutely terrified and have been crying on and off in fear that I will lose the baby. I have an U/S tomorrow and am praying to see a little heartbeat. I'm not sure what would be causing the spotting. There are no cramps and I am on oral progesterone tablets. I haven't had sex for a while because I've been out of town visiting family and my husband is back home working. Has anyone had brown and/or light pink spotting for a few days before and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy? Any stories will help - thanks in advance for sharing!

Re: Light Brown Spotting

  • I can't provide very real assurance as I'm only 7 weeks with my first, but I had some kind of heavy brown spotting last week and called the doc about it. Lots and lots of things can cause spotting - the formation of the placenta, absolutely any irritation of the cervix, anything that causes you to "bear down," - coughing, straining for a BM, vomiting, etc. I have always been told the things to worry about are pain bad enough to double you over and bleeding like a period. Everything else is most likely a variation of normal.
Also, unless you're having symptoms like I listed above, don't bother with the ER. The ER docs are not OB specialists and often are unable to give reliable info except to rule out an ectopic pregnancy.
FX for a healthy check up tomorrow!

I had very very light brown spotting at 7w4d and went for an ultrasound. Turns out, I had a very small subchorionic hematoma that could have been causing the spotting. Personally, I think my NP irritated my cervix at my appointment 3 days earlier... Either way, there are a lot of things that can cause spotting in pregnancy. Try not to freak out yet , that won't do anything good for you or baby.

Edit: I'm 16w today and baby is doing great.

  • Unless you have heavy, bright red bleeding and/or intense cramping, it is likely that you have nothing to worry about. Do your best to remain calm until your US tomorrow; the additional stress does no good for you or your baby. FX for you.

There are a lot of things that can cause spotting in early pregnancy, as several PPs have mentioned. With DS I spotted constantly because my cervix dropped really low as my uterus straightened up and it got irritated on EVERYTHING. Most of the time it was brown, but it would occasionally be bright red. My OB told me not to worry about it unless it was a heavy enough flow to fill a pad within an hour.

  • Thank you everyone! I'm staying positive and looking forward to good news at my appointment today. ❤️
  • It could be like @ShadeofGreen816 mentioned, or, because brown blood is old blood, it could be old blood that your growing uterus is pushing out, if you will. Unless it's a lot of bright red blood it's unlikely to be much to worry about.
