TTC After a Loss

Anyone else in the same boat?

I had a perfect low risk pregnancy almost 2 years ago, and have a wonderful almost 2 year old son. Around March of this year we started to try for a 2nd child, and had a miscarriage in May. We started trying again in July and got pregnant in September and I just miscarried again a week ago. Is it possible to develop things after your first pregnancy that cause miscarriages the 2nd time around? Like the blood clotting disorder? My blood is O+ so it's not an rh negative thing. I'm in the process of waiting for my hcg to return to 0, but after I've requested to do a RLP. However, I've read online that most of the time this requires like 14 to 20 vials of blood, and my doctor says she's only going to take 5. Does this mean she's not going to test for everything? I'm thinking of contacting an RE, but I'm not sure if I need a referral for this, and if I see an RE, do I still continue to see my OBGYN if I get pregnant again or would I just see the RE? I know this is a lot at once, I'm just so devastated and can't help but think that I was supposed to have my ultrasound this week. I just don't want to go through this again. Has anyone had 2 miscarriages in a row after a normal and successful pregnancy, then go on to have a baby or find out what's wrong?

Re: Anyone else in the same boat?

  • I'm so very sorry for your losses. It is devastating, even if you already have living children. I have 2 kids and lost my 3rd pregnancy in March. We took a while off before trying again and haven't gotten pregnant again yet so its still just the one loss... but there are some women on this board that have had multiple losses, but most of us have not had our rainbow baby yet - but it is possible to just have 'bad luck' and have 2 losses in a row.

Its always a great idea to ask your doctor questions and find out what she is testing for and ask about anything you may want to further investigate. You can also ask her to refer you to an RE or MFM if you would feel more comfortable with a specialist. Its your body, your growing family - do what gives you the most confidence.

Good luck.. this is a very supportive board

  • Im sorry to see you here. I've had 2 losses in a row but don't have any living children so my situation is a little different. I am working with an RE for rpl testing though and my RE said she would tx me all through my first trimester when I get pg again. I know of a couple people irl who have had multiple losses after having a baby and have gone on to have another baby. Unfortunately I think it's just one of those things that happens. I know none of us on here like that answer but even after testing so many people don't know why they've had losses.
  • I am sorry for your loss. This is a great group of women, and they are all very helpful, especially when it comes to support during the ttcal process. However, many of us here are still working on having our first child. You may find more answers if you ask the pgal group as they will have more success stories. I hope you find the answers you are looking for.  :)

  • Hi!  I can not believe how similar our stories are!  I also had a very easy pregnancy with my son who is now 4.  It took us almost a year of trying to once again conceive in March and we found out in May at my ten week appointment that I had had a MMC.  It was a blighted ovum.  We started trying again in July and I got my BFP on October 1st only come to find a few days later it was a chemical pregnancy.  I scheduled an appointment with a RE for this Thursday as I am also wondering if I have developed a clotting disorder.

Oh wow, our stories are incredibly similar. I have my RE appointment on October 26th, and my OBGYN is going to run 7 of the RLP tests today. I'm sorry for your losses. Please keep me updated on how it's going for you though. I wish you lots of good luck.
  • First, I'm so sorry for your losses. I'm in a similar boat, I had two perfectly healthy normal pregnancies and have a 2 year old and 4 year old. I've just had two losses over the past year. I asked my doctor this same exact question and her reply was, "it could just be bad luck" or it is 100% possible something has changed and you have a problem & that's why we are doing all this testing. She said yes, this can completely change out of no where. Totally f-Ed up and I'm hopefully it's just bad luck!  She did say the miscarriage percentage for a 3rd loss is like 25%-30%, which I thought wasn't bad. (I'm 32 years) praying its bad luck for all of us!
