GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered?
Hands down it was The Ice Storm of 98'.
We had no power or water for 10 days. We slept in one room with every blanket in the house next to our wood burning fireplace with 3 other families who didn't have one. We would melt snow and boil it for water. The neighbourhood shared food from defrosting fridges and deep freezers. I was only 10 during the storm. I remember everything looked beautiful. But the weight of the ice brought down every hydro wire and so many trees.
GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? Living in north and central Georgia, we've had a few ice storms but that's about it.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? Sandy for sure. 90% of my friends lost their houses, some still aren't back 3 years later. I didn't have power for 11 days and I was 2 miles in land. Every childhood landmark I knew is now gone or totally different. I used to take the bridge that was all over the news (house in the bay pic) to work every single day even though it was longer, just because it was more peaceful. I never did again. I trained for my marathon through the wreckage and the things I saw, houses with their sides just torn right off from where the ocean broke through to the bay, an entire community burned to the ground one day later as gas fires erupted, kids toys in the streets, people's lives water logged and moldy. Ugh, it was so upsetting. It changed our entire landscape. All my love goes to the people in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina right now. I just hope everyone stays safe and sound.
GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? There has been a tornado in my hometown. We did have a snow storm where we used to live that it took days for all the streets to be cleared. We closed work early, which never happens. Where I currently live, the major freeway that runs through town was closed because of a blizzard a couple of years ago. Nothing terrible though.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered?
I missed Hurricane Irene because I was out of state, but it caused a lot of flood damage from the river and downed trees in our area. The whole downtown area of businesses was damaged and my street was mostly flooded before I lived here. Luckily I bought a house on the top of the hill and it isn't in flood zone. Hurricane Sandy left me without power for 9 days and I luckily could cook on the gas stove /shower with warm water. However, I couldn't dry my hair and I could see my breath in the house since it was so cold. It was impossible to get gas or food because no one had electricity and a lot of roads were inaccessible because of fallen trees. Everything was pitch black and driving on roads without traffic lights was scary. DH didn't have power at his parents' for 12 days. My friends and I met up at the bar and that's when he and I really bonded. He asked me on a date a couple of weeks later. I had to go to house hop and stay with friends a few times since I had to go back to work before power was restored. We actually had 3 days of school in another town's school since they had a fall break.

@berg - woah! That sounds so intense to be in Hurricane Sandy. I was visiting my DH (then BF) in Rochester, NY when Sandy was approaching, and I was told our plane was the last one off the East Coast before Sandy hit!

I don't remember too much about it, but if you talk to anyone from Minnesota...they'll tell you about the Halloween blizzard of '91. We pretty much deal with snow... there's never too much really.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? Either a snowstorm in '93 (March 13) - my dad had a surprise party for my mom's 40th and when she was driving home from work that day, she had to take main roads because the freeway had been closed;
Or the part of Sandy that reached us. I remember sleeping horribly that night with the wind howling outside my window and the place I was living had no power for 4 1/2 days. Also, the city rescheduled trick or treating that year.

Snow storm in DC about 7 years ago....lots of heavy snow, even the ice rink roof nearby collapsed!
@GeorgiaWife6912 happy to have you here!!
@berg I'm so sorry you were so impacted by Sandy. it is really difficult to go through something like that. It's really unbelievable what Mother Nature can do.

@berg I feel ya... I need all the coffee for the Friday that feels like Monday. My husband works for Georgia Power and he was gone for 3 weeks during Sandy doing power restoration, so while I wasn't there, I got to see all of his pictures of the devastation. My heart broke for everyone affected. I cant imagine. Praying for everyone here and in Florida and South Carolina and that they don't have to experience what y'all did. (I am in central Georgia so we will likely won't even get much rain from the storm).
@NYTino24 Have fun visiting your sister! Fx the dip is from YH. And what a fun story from a bad situation!
@KhRun17 thanks for the love! Sorry MIL is being a PITA!
@eggplantface sorry for CD1

@NYTino24 what the hail, do you have to be wearing a suit and tie to get into that place? Weird.
@KhRun17 I remember hearing about that bridge on the news. So awful. Glad your mom was ok.
@leekat14 I remember the blizzard of 2010. I was at college in southern VA and even they had several feet of snow which was super unusual for them.

GTKY: We've had some bad snowstorms and hurricanes but where I live in central MD I guess I'm lucky that I can't recall being hit by anything too terrible. We lost power from Irene and Sandy and I bummed off my friends gym membership so I could shower, but we didn't get it nearly as bad as NJ did.
There was the blizzard of 96 which I hear was pretty awful. But I was 7 so I was just like hooray, no school! And dug literal tunnels of snow all over the yard.

@eggplantface NOOOOO. Ugh, sorry friend!
GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered?
I'm on the east coast and we don't get anything truly awful. We have a had tornado's but their extremely rare. We have had some really bad snowstorms, but the worst ones were when I was really small, so ones I don't remember. We've had some crappy ice storms in recent years. But KOW that things stay relatively quiet!
@khrun17 That bridge collapse picture is crazy!!! I'm slightly fearful of bridges to begin with, especially long ones. Now I'm definitely cracking my windows and making sure my doors are unlocked every time I go over a bridge!
GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? I'd say Hurricane Sandy. I'm in PA, so it wasn't horrible, but still shut down a lot of things.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered?
Living in CO we occasionally got big blizzards that shut down roads and knocked out power for a couple days. Honestly I usually found them fun. I've never been through a hurricane, but I have family in FL. FX so hard for everyone in Matthew's path.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? DH and I were both living in Tuscaloosa (AL) during the April 27, 2011 tornados. There is a map of the tornado's path that came out with red being the direct path, then orange, then yellow. Our apartments (we didn’t live together, we lived across the hall from each other) were on the line between the red and the orange. The street right behind us was completely wiped out. Thankfully, our apartment complex only had minor damage (a few shingles missing, a few trees fail, some siding ripped off). Because our apartment was so close to the tornado path, water was deemed unsafe to drink/use before boiling. We stuck it out for a few days before we decided to head back to our home town. It was hit pretty bad, too, and there was no power, but at least there was clean water. (Also, there was a curfew enacted for safety reasons because of looters and robberies occurring because of the lack of power.) The one good thing that came out of the whole thing was that we met all of our neighbors in our apartment complex that day and became pretty good friends with many of them. When the tornado sirens started going off, we ran upstairs and beat on all of our neighbors’ doors to tell them to come downstairs to DH’s apartment. Many people were still in school, but there ended up being 7 or 8 people and a dog squished into one bathroom. After the tornado passed over us, we had a cookout that night and everyone emptied their freezers. (At the time, we didn’t know how bad Tuscaloosa had gotten hit. The next few days were very solemn.)

@LadyMillil and @maebee87 We had a really bad ice storm in my hometown in the mid-90s. I remember my parents, my brother, and I camping out in the living room and playing games for several days. Also, my brother and I decided to “sled” down the hill beside our house and I cut my nose on a fallen tree limb. I was really young, so I don’t remember much else. I’m sure it was really scary and bad for the adults, but it is actually a nice memory for me.
@berg I’m so sorry you were affected by Hurricane Sandy. I hope that everything is being rebuilt nicely. When we visited Tuscaloosa last year, the first time in almost 4 years, everything had been rebuilt better than before. It looked total different, but nicer.
@GeorgiaWife6912 Yay for cross hairs!
@NYTino24 That’s so ridiculous that your DH was turned away for wearing sports gear! I could understand if it was a classy restaurant, but a bar? Come on, now. There is a certain satisfaction in knowing they were called out on the radio, though.
@KhRun17 Wow! That is a lot of snow!! Also, the bridge collapsing is a thing of nightmares.

@Purplg8r Hurricane Andrew? I didn’t realize there was a Hurricane Andrew right now, but glad you have not been as affected as expected! (My mom always jokes that my brother was named after the Hurricane Andrew that hit in 1992 because it was just a couple months before he was born.)

My rant is that I was doing so well that I was kind of hoping all my twws would feel like this (tho I hope not to have many more, of course), but then last night I got a bit of the BSC and wanted to know NOW and was going over all sorts of scenarios. I think I'm okay now tho...although I have a terrible headache
GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered? I'd have to say back when I was in the Navy Reserves....we were on a search and rescue mission (just seeing if anyone needed help; not out for anyone specifically) up the west coast of BC because it was crazy stormy. It felt like in a movie because the waves were so big! You'd look out the back and it could be a wall of water higher than the ship and then suddenly we'd be on the crest of the wave and you'd see absolutely nothing! Plus walking around was super hard and we were even getting lifted out of our seats going over these waves. There were a TON of people who were sea sick ugh. I was in the operations room on shift and someone was trying to get stuff out of the filing cabinet and was bailing all over the place lol Then we hit a wave particularly hard, everything that wasn't "secure for sea", including us, lifted up and then slammed down. And then the scary thing happened....We hear someone piping "Emergency stations, Emergency stations, Flood, Flood, Flood!"
Now, thankfully we're trained quite well for emergencies but that doesn't mean it wasn't scary! Also good was that we weren't actually taking on water, some pipes had just burst so it sounded like it (one of them was the "black water", our sewage ewww). But we were definitely damaged and managed to limp in between a couple islands to wait out the storm. The whole ship was dark, most people were sick (even our captain OMG), we weren't allowed to use any running water. And there were stories circulating about how long we'd be stuck out there lol It was pretty freaky!!! All in all we were really lucky and were able to slowly return home the next day but it was a crazy experience!
Speaking of storms, it's pretty stormy here right now; I can hear crap blowing around on the deck...nothurricane weather tho, and I just want to say I hope everyone stays safe!!!!
@Lund yeah my first few cups of decaf were disgusting. Now I just put a whole lot of creamer in it. I get pretty intense caffeine withdrawl headaches. I wanted to kick it while I could still take something to deal with that. I normally have a cup on the weekend bc DH makes it and I'm too lazy to make another pot (and it's SO much better!!). I'm sure if I were to get KTFU, I will have a cup of reg here or there. Let's not kid ourselves.
@lulu1180 FX for you! I was SS like crazy last TWW and now I keep telling myself I won't this time... but I probably will in a week.

GTKY: With all the talk about hurricane Matthew, what is the worst storm (tornado, snow, etc) that you have weathered?
You guys have some wild storm stories! There aren't many storms in NorCal: just earthquakes, fire, and drought. When we're lucky, it'll rain for a few days and people will call it a storm, but it's also drought relief so kind of good when it happens. I have family who's homes were totally destroyed in Texas during Hurricane Ike and they barely got the cats out in one piece. It was a mess, but I didn't weather it myself. Good luck to everyone in Matthew's path!

@lulu1180 - the number of times during TWW I stare at my boobs to see if they've changed and then I realize I don't know what change would really look like is crazy.
@leekat14 - I remember when I was in college hearing about the Metrodome roof collapse in Minneapolis. It was where all the sports teams played and was basically a big bubble filled with air, it was super cool, but couldn't support the weight of the snow.
@berg - there has been a lot more inspections of bridges, and the standards are higher across the country since the bridge collapse. There was a study done right after it of safety of bridges, and they're way better now!
@LuND - if I don't answer MIL's calls, she'll call DH. And he's terrible at keeping things to himself that she doesn't need to know, and he's worse at getting off the phone...so it ends up being an all night thing with him. Unfortunately, it's easier if I talk to her.
@CrystalPDX - a BFP would be the best birthday present! DH and I have our anniversary this month, and I was thinking the same thing. As far as the wine tasting goes...could you be all "fancy" and spit the wine out at the tasting or would they insist you drink it?
@Wabash15 - you grew up there? That's awesome! I LOVED visiting there! We got engaged at Letchworth (by fingerlakes) and DH and I have been craving our favorite bar out there. Oh...and Spot Coffee! Rochester is such a cool place. And we visited Niagara one time, and went to a concert in Buffalo once too.
@Mrlight - wow, that storm sounds so intense! Awesome that you made sure your neighbors were safe. I love when communities come together like that!
@vflux33 - "Just" earthquakes, fire and drought. Those are all terrifying! And they seem to happen every year to you guys.
