Obgyn won't see me

I had my DS 9 months ago and now that I'm pregnant again I figured I can call my obgyn and get an appointment. Well I was surprised to hear that she won't see me without a referral. I thought I don't need a referral again. I'm so confused. Is that how it works? I'm in Ontario.

Re: Obgyn won't see me

  • I'm not in Canada but I had to go to a lab to confirm pregannacy before I could get into the OBGYNs here (military hospital)

  • How strange. I don't know how it works in Canada but when we had our insurance set up back in CA, I was assigned a physician and a gyno/ob and was able to schedule an appt with the OB for my first appointment. This time in NC, I had to find a private practice and ended up going to a physician center for women only so it's kind of a 2 in 1 place I guess. Do you have a physician so you can get the pregnancy confirmed then get the official referral? Hopefully some other Canadians here will have some insight!

  • Here you don't need a new referral if it's within 2 years (I'm in southern AB). I'm surprised they wanted you to get one after only nine months. It'll be easy enough to get though, any family doc or walkin clinic should be able to refer you

  • It's so weird sometimes. After I had my son, I had to actually get referred back to my fertility clinic (Calgary). Wtf, you have my embryos in your freezer and I have to get a referral??

That being said, my OB told me to just come back if I have any other pregnancies so I don't think I need a referral for that. So I'm not sure why yours needs one? Maybe there are different provincial policies
  • I think it's a new referral for a new pregnancy. I used to work in ortho and each new body part needed a new referral.

  • I was kind of in a similar boat, I've have been turned down by 4 OBs before one finally agreed to take me.  My issue though is that I am considered too high risk for most regular OBs though.  I did finally have one see me though after a referral from my RE.

  • It's just frustrating to have to go back to my family dr to be referred again! I am sick 24/7 and with a 9 month old it gets tiring. I asked my friend and she said her obgyn took her without a referral so I guess it depends on the clinic.
  • Here in Bc I believe you need a new referral after 6 or 7 months.  I had the same issue with my endocrinologist. She scheduled me to come back at the end of the year and when I went to set up the appointment her receptionist said I needed to get a referral from my GP. I was so annoyed
  • Weird! I think that probably dependent on location and insurance. I've never needed a referral to see my obgyn. Im sorry :(

  • I decided to go with a midwife instead. It's easier to get to and the wait won't be as long. Plus no referral required!
  • I briefly considered delivering in Ontario (I live on the border and that hospital is an hour closer to me) and when I called they were willing to see me right away.  I was a bit shocked because I expected to have to jump through some hoops.  Probably because I'm American and would be paying out of pocket and didn't need paperwork trails for insurance?

  • I needed a referral from my PCP for my first pregnancy over 2 years ago, but it was pretty simple. I just had to go in, pee in a cup and confirm pregnancy and then she gave me a referral of my choice of in network OBs. I'm in the states.
