Pregnant after IF

Two Vessel Cord (SUA)

Hey ladies, I had our anatomy ultrasound last week and unfortunately found out that I have a two vessel umbilical cord (single umbilical artery). It is supposed to have three vessels with two arteries and one vein. I have to go back for a followup ultrasound in two weeks and will find out more info then. I am worried of course, but we have gotten through a lot so far and we will get through this too!! I haven't seen anyone else with this on the boards recently, but if you have this or know anyone that has, I would love any info or insight you have. Thank you!

Re: Two Vessel Cord (SUA)

  • My sister had this condition. Her baby turned out healthy and happy!I think they worry a little more about concurrent abnormalities  (heart and kidney if I remember correctly ) so you
may have additional ultrasounds to be safe.My niece did have some change in her heart noted pre birth, but was resolved after she was born.
Hoping that this gives you some assurance pending your next ultrasound I know how stressful it was for my sister .

  • I was actually born with a two vessel cord, and had zero issues whatsoever.  They didn't know about it ahead of time, just discovered it at time of birth.  I asked my OB, and it sounds like it can just randomly happen (and is not hereditary) and most of the time is just a benign anomaly.

  • Thanks so much @pnw12rn! I had a second follow up ultrasound and thankfully all of baby boys organs looked good and his growth was fine! We just have to have a few extra ultrasounds to ensure his growth is on track.
