I got my flu shot last Wednesday at my dr appointment-I was 16 weeks. I got my TDap shot last year before becoming pregnant, so I am still covered there. TDap has the whooping cough vaccine in it, and my Dr suggested anyone who is going to be around the baby have it. She also recommended that anyone living in the home with a pregnant woman or infant have the flu vaccine since those are two particularly vulnerable populations with flu.

Yep, I just got my flu shot at 17 weeks and it's recommended to get the Tdap with every pregnancy. Your spouse and anyone else spending a lot of time with baby needs it as well.
It's recommended that you get the tDap shot with every pregnancy so that the immunity you build up from it passes to the baby in utero. Even if you just had one, you'll need to get it again unfortunately
Yes, I got those when I was pregnant with my daughter. And I'll do it again with this pregnancy. I am terrified of babies getting Whopping cough, so anything I can do to help prevent it I do. My husband and mother also got it.
Yep - Got my flu shot two weeks ago at my regular appointment and will get the TDAP during 3rd tri. DH and all the immediate grandparents that will be around the babies regularly will also be getting both of these shots before they get here!

@laurennowa Thanks for sharing that-it makes sense that we would need to get it again so the baby can get immunity, too! I had no idea, as a FTM, and it's good to know!

My OB recommended it at my last visit but said I would wait until my next visit to get it, so that's what I'm doing. DH and I have never gotten a flu shot and I think he's gonna fight me on it, but hopefully he'll listen to the doctor and get it...I also told him he'd have to get one for the whooping cough and I'm not sure he believes me yet. This should be fun telling his parents they need to get it, too, if they plan on being around the baby...my parents won't mind.

I dont usually get the flu shot, but ALWAYS do when pregnant. My dad is in the medical field... kind of person always tells me I don't need things. Very anti medicine for being in the medical field. BUT! When I mentioned not getting a flu shot, he got very passionate and insisted I get it. Suppressed pregnant immune system, inability to treat awful flu symptoms with medications since they aren't pregnancy safe, not to mention greater chances of preterm labor or other dangers to baby. NOT worth the risk of skipping in my opinion!
Are any of you receiving these suggestions in Canada? This is my 4th pregnancy and I have never been told this! I will be asking at my next appointment. Thank you for the tips.
We all got dTap and flu shots ( our parents included) with Lu and I will do both again. I want this kid to have a bit of immunity in case he comes across pertussis in those early months.

@DrillSergeantCat I have a friend who works for the CDC and she helps develop the flu vaccine every year. She said that the one they have released will be the only version out this year as it takes them months to create the vaccine. I went to her and asked after my doctor's appointment.

@RunBooRun - You might want to check with work - when they put the information out about our free flu clinic at work they said they would not give the vaccine to pregnant women. Just didn't want you to miss a chance to get it at your doc and then they tell you they couldn't do it at work!

The OB I'm trying to leave is giving all pregnant patients flu shots right now, delayed mine from my 15wk6day visit to my 21wk5day visit because I was super nauseous & throwing up.
I got my flu shot last week and I'll get the TDap in my third trimester. My doctor thought waiting until December for the flu shot would be far too late (which is when my work offers it). I'm Rh negative so I'll be getting RhoGAMat 28 weeks and again at birth. Additionally, I'll be getting a measles booster after the baby is born since I tested negative for measles antibodies (if I could get it before, I would). I kinda feel like I'm getting never ending shots. She also recommended my husband get a flu shot and TDap (which we will do).

I'm in Canada too and never have I ever been offered the flu shot. My doctor didn't recommend it during my first pregnancy when I asked because she said there weren't enough studies done for use on pregnant women (this was 4 years ago though). This pregnan and my second one though I've never asked and never been offered the flu or TDap shots for myself or my family members. We would opt out anyway though, due to my son's adverse reactions.
I will get the flu shot this week or next when my work offers it and the TDap in my 3rd tri like my doctor recommends. I'm also making DH get both shots and requesting our family members do the same

Thanks, but I don't think it will be a problem. I work at a hospital and you have to get it or wear a mask. Even if they did turn me down, they require them early enough that other places will still be offering and then I'd have to bring the paperwork to work so that I can go mask free.
@ihateusernames* Thanks for the info. Last time, I was told something similar about the flu shot (not enough research done on pregnant ladies) but I will ask in case the recommendations have changed.
I had already had my flu shot when I got pregnant with DD, and I got my TDaP in the 3rd tri. (My DH, all the grandparents, and a few other close relatives also got the TDaP. Of course my MIL thought it was a personal attack on her and threatened not to get it, until whooping cough went around while I was pregnant and I banned her until the outbreak was over and she was immunized.) This time around I am getting my flu shot at my next appointment, I'll be 17 weeks. I will get the TDaP again in the 3rd tri.
As everyone else said, yes yes yes. Trap in third tri to pass on immunity. Flu sooner though...I don't want to wait until December and catch the flu earlier than that!

I was just about to ask this same thing. I'm in Canada and never with my first pregnancy, never for anyone in my family during pregnancy has any OB ever mentioned flu shot or tdap. Now with a whole new midwife, it hasn't been mentioned at all either, I am curious and will bring it up at my next visit.
@Burrberrymum Would you let me know what she says? I am with an OB this time so I am not sure if he will be stuck in an older mindset on this so I would like another opinion.
@jem89 I will definitely let you know. I'm very curious.. I'll only be seeing my midwife at the end of October but I will add it to my list of things to ask!

I just told my husband what you all said about the flu shot and tdap. He mumbled something under his breath all I'll guess I'll need to take him to my next midwife appt so she can explain to him. What about kids will they need the shots also. I have a 15 and 9 year old. I have until the end of the Oct to my next appt.

Yes! Definitely would reccomend that your kids get them! Would hate for them to catch something and pass it onto the baby!

Really anyone in close contactwith baby for tge first two months should get a tdap or have had one in the last ten years. Grandparents too if they will be around. Your husband can find tons of info about the importance of a pertussis vaccine online. Including videos of babies with whooping cough.
Isms whipping cough not d big of a problem in 5 Canada? Sort of like tons of Americans have never heard of fifth's disease?
No, whooping cough is a big deal here too. They are very on top of children's vaccinations but seem to be more relaxed about adult ones, (which I personally find odd, since many adults are walking around with their immunity all worn off). Compared to what I hear from my American friends though, shots in Canada are not as aggressively pushed in general (as in we don't get kicked out of practices for not vaccinating, and we still get the option for philosophical, medical or religious vaccine exemptions to attend public school). From what I've been told, it's not like this below the border, especially in California now.
