Baby Names

Katelyn and Madelyn?

Hi all,

I am not a baby name sharer because I don't like the opinions of others but I really need some! Our DD is and her name is Katelyn but she mostly goes by Kate. We are considering Madelyn as a name for baby sister. Are they just to similar? I also like the spelling Madeline but I am afraid it would be pronounced Mada-line vs Mada-lynn. Thoughts??

Re: Katelyn and Madelyn?

  • I don't think people will mispronounce Madeline as that's the most common spelling. For me personally it's a little too matchy.. what about Maddison? Same feel but slightly less similar

  • I wouldn't do it. Too similar.
    DD: Ophelia 5/18/15
  • It's time to step away from the Lyn names. They are too close.
    This.

And I pronounce Madeline as mada-line.
    +1 to both quotes.

Also, if you're going to use Madison, I'd recommend the single 'd', vs the double as spelled by PP. It just looks really weird and will most likely be misspelled by everyone if you spell it Maddison

  • I personally don't think it's too matchy, especially if she goes by Kate. You could just correct the pronunciation, most people only need to hear the correction once to understand it. The pronunciation may be even less of an issue if she will be going by a NN like Maddie.
  • I have both a Katelyn and Madelyn.  I don't find it too matchy, mainly because they both go by nicknames Kiki & Maddy.
  • I prefer Madeline so that at least the spelling of the endings differs. You probably would have to correct people if you don't like the "mad-a-line" pronounciation though.

        yup yup yup
  • I agree that Katelyn and Madelyn are too similar but again, people probably won't notice when using nicknames. Using Madeline as a spelling to me would be a better option. Other than the children's book, which obviously it's pronounced Made-line, I've never personally IRL heard it pronounced that, only Made-lynn, but maybe that's a local thing, idk. Growing up I just always thought that was how the French pronounced it. Madeline is actually my top pick right now for a girl's name, pronounced as -lynn, if DH would agree to it....

  • I think it's too matchy but i think Katelyn and Madison sound great.

  • It's matchy, but not so much so that I would side eye it. I prefer the Madeline spelling over Madelyn.

  • Too matchy, especially with such similar spelling.
  • Too similar... and for the love of God, just say no to Madison, with any spelling.
    ^this so many times.
  • Too similar.
  • Kate and Madelyn doesn't sound matchy to me at all. Does she pretty much only go by Kate?

Is Mad-e-line totally out of the question? Because Katelyn and Madeline ("line") aren't matchy and it's a way better choice than Madison.

  • Even if she only goes by Kate, I still think Katelyn and Madelyn will be said/written together frequently. It's too matchy.
  • Too matchy.  I would avoid anything Madeline or Madison related and go in a totally different direction, please
  • Whenever I see the spelling Madelyn I always think "made-lyn". It's mostly because I feel like it's not an intuitive spelling for that name and it arises me. If you have a Kaitlyn and a Madeline I wouldt
bat an eye. A Madd-a-Lynn would be too match.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • I would never pronounce Madeline as Madelyn.  Maybe it's regional but to me that's pronouncing it wrong. They are two different names.

  • Too matchy IMO. I'd go with something else entirely. Madelyn/Madison etc are so common but a little dated as a trend. Suggesting some names with some similar elements: Matilda, Natalie, Sadie, Lydia, Elise.

I think it works out, especially since you refer to your eldest at Kate. We named our daughter Madilyn. I tend to pronounce Madeline as mad-a-line when read. Plus if you go with Madi as a nickname, I think Kate and Madi sound nice.

  • French spelling?  Madeleine.
  • Madelyn is one of my main choices for a girl name so I am biased, but I love it. I don't think they are too matchy (DD1's name ends in "-Lee" and DD2's name ends in "-ley" though, so I guess matching doesn't bother me.

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34
