Protein Shakes

I really, really need to get more protein into my diet, but most meat makes me feel ill, and I can only eat so much cheese. I also can't seem to tolerate dairy in the form of milk or yogurt, so that's out as well. I figured a protein shake would be a good way to go. I have a few different protein bars, but I'd like to add a shake in as well.

Any suggestions? If you're using one you like, please tell me about it!

Re: Protein Shakes

  • We use BSN Syntha 6 protein, and I think it is absolutely delicious.  I'm pretty picky about protein powders (some of them are soo nasty), and I seriously think the vanilla milkshake flavor tastes exactly like a milkshake.  I usually blend mine with berries and milk. I'm sure almond or coconut milk would work just fine.

    Perfect, I'll check it out!

  • I drink Boost high protein daily per my MFM's nutritionist. One thing to watch is all of the extra vitamins that all of the "sport" powders contain- most vitamins you just pee out the extra that you don't use but some (like vitamin a in particular) CAN lead to vitamin toxicity and can be harmful to a fetus, so I'd suggest double checking with a nutritionist if possible (most larger OBs have one on staff, no?)
  • I love adkins protein shakes. They're super yummy! I also love Body by Visuals when i'm not pregnant. I haven't asked the dr if I could take it during pregnancy but would be worth checking out.
  • I've been having a similar struggle with protein. Also have a dairy sensitivity - no milk, yogurt, cream and can only tolerate a small amount of hard cheese.

I usually make smoothies and add protein powder. I find this is also a great way to get extra greens/vegetable and other nutrients in, depending on what I might be lacking that week.

I alternate between hemp protein powder and a plant based protein powder. My go-to brand is Nutiva, but there are other similar options out there. I generally look for powders that don't have extra additives like sugar, artificial flavors, etc. I also go with the "plain" flavors since I feel like this leaves more flexibility when added to smoothies.

My favorite smoothie lately has been a mint chip concoction. The main ingredients are almond milk, banana, fresh mint, protein powder, vanilla extract, dates, and some cacao nibs roughly blended in at the end. I usually add spinach if I have it on hand and sometimes coconut oil or some avocado. And then you can get creative with superfoods, like chia seeds, spirulina (gives it a fun minty color), etc.

If I'm really craving chocolate I'll make roughly the same thing, just with no mint and with unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder instead of nibs. Cinnamon is a good addition to this blend as well. Actually there's a good chance I'll be having this "chocolate shake" this afternoon ;)
  • What is it about the meat that makes you feel ill? I can't really eat whole pieces. Like a chicken breast, or fish fillet, etc. Although if I cut it up in a casserole, or shred it and make burritos I can eat it that way. Basically 'masking' it with other foods. Plus eggs, I have been eating a lot of eggs.

Also you can look up vegetarian "diets"(not as in weight loss. But daily meals), there are a lot of fruits, veggies, and seeds that actually have a ton of protein.

I usually vomit if I eat meat. It doesn't matter how I eat it (whole, mixed into something), it just doesn't set well in my stomach.

This is basically how I am as well. I'm fine with ground beef mixed into something else, but the idea of a piece of steak or even a hamburger is usually repulsive to me.

Before I was pregnant I probably only ate meat or fish 3-4 times a week. I don't eat chicken or turkey and never wanted to eat lots of red meat, so I was kind of limited in that respect.

So now in addition to smoothies, I also eat lots of eggs, as well as vegetarian sources of protein, like beans, chickpeas, lentils, almonds. Some of those weren't so appealing over the hot summer, but make great soup additions or bases.
  • Quinoa is very high in protein as well and contains all 9 amino acids.
  • I had the same idea and went to the store and sorted through a bunch of mixes for ingredients that I was okay with.  I took it home and the next day went I went to make one, I noticed it had a label saying not for pregnant women.  :|

  • I really enjoy the Vega line, it's vegan so it has no whey (which is lactose) or soy which lots of people are allergic to.

I like the mocha one, vanilla chai and just the plain vanilla. They have tons of options and great snack options as well that are high in protein.

It is on par with most good quality protein powders price wise. https://myvega.com/
