married to goldilocks -- mattress recommendations for adults please

In the last 3 years, my husband has had us buy two new mattresses in his unending quest for sleep perfection and has now launched a campaign for a third.  Do you love your mattress?  What do you have?

In the past, I have let DH pick out the mattresses because he's got an iffy back--the doctor says its just the muscles and he's gone through physical therapy; we are going to request another round of tests to see if they have more/different PT to recommend or if they can find anything structural; DH is quite active and fit, he just has a sore back almost every day.  This time, I'm going to take the lead, so please share your mattress wisdom.

  • I have the Serta I comfort in the most firm and hate it. Everyone else I know that has it love it.

  • @PerraSucia    :s  Yeah, we're currently sleeping on an Ikea Extra Firm and I don't love it.  I think "most firm" or extra firm is too firm for DH.  DH has a baseball bubble butt, so a mattress needs to let that sink in.  I think right now his butt is keeping his back off the mattress (if he's sleeping on his back.)

@Amber_Waves My H has the bubble butt problem too. He also played baseball :p We have the Laura Ashley - Felicity Plush and LOVE it
  • Does he have any interest in Sleep Number, or one of the other brands where you can choose your firmness? My parents have SN and they love it. My mom jokes (?) that they would probably sleep in different beds if not for that brand. You could also try a mattress pad in half the width of your bed (get an XL twin pad for a Queen bed) so he can have something a little squishier.

  • hahaha yes he loves it! he probably sleeps better in it that I do!
  • @Vastra I can sleep on almost anything, so it's okay to get a mattress that focuses on his needs...we're just having trouble figuring out what mattress that is.  I do wonder if he needs variety in his mattress from day to day, so maybe a sleepnumber would be good so he could change it every so often.
  • I like a super soft mattress, and we have one of the all memory foam mattresses... LOVE it. I don't remember the brand. I've heard bad reviews of the sleep # beds for allergy sufferers, so we did not consider those when we were shopping.

I've also heard great things about Tuft + Needle mattresses, but I've never tried one myself.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • We tried out bed in a box this year and love it! We were a little nervous buying online, but their return policy is pretty painless. You donate the mattress if you don't like it! So you don't have to ship it back. (Although if you purchase the frame there is a restocking fee if you don't want that) Their website explains it and we also called and talked to customer service and they were helpful too.
  • Our bed is one DH bought when he was single. It's too firm for me, but we've put a memory foam topper on it. When we have the funds & space for a king, I'm pretty sure we're either going to do a sleep number or one completely made of memory foam.
  • Tempur memory foam mattresses are amazing! They mold to your shape to give great support. I find that i get super warm though as they seem to really hold the heat
  • I have the Serta Perfect Sleeper Loyalist King size bed and am OBSESSED with my bed! I hate sleeping anywhere else, including higher end hotels because my bed is my own little slice of heaven! lol

I will have to look at what we have but one half is firm and one half is not. I'm pretty sure it's a Sealy but I know we got it at Macy's. I also put a feather bed on it and love it. MH hates it so we compromise that we only use it when it's cold.
  • We are also shopping for a new mattress right now and after looking into it a bit, are going the organic route and and getting a natural latex/cotton/wool mattress.  I'm concerned about all the chemicals and flame retardants in traditional type and memory foam mattresses and wanted to go the natural route.  And latex and wool/cotton do breathe and wick moisture/heat.  Latex also sort of conforms to your body - although not as much as memory foam.  They are more $$ than regular mattresses but I think it is worth it.  Let the eye rolls commence!!
  • @missmercibeaucoup No eye rolls from me! This is a problem I am willing to throw money at!! We have had both a memory foam topper on a mattress and a memory foam mattress and DH found them too conforming. Maybe organic latex is the way to go. Did you pick out a specific brand yet?
  • @janefelicity thanks!
@teachermom2517 that is quite the endorsement! We'll see if we can find one to test out.
@cantalopes24 thanks! I don't think we need dual zones...whatever works for him should work for me (I'm easy!)
  • @Amber_Waves  yes I think we are going with Naturepedic, however I also really like Vivetique (but I live in LA and both are based here so it was easy to go to their store and try them all out).  You can also find latex mattresses at lots of other mattress superstore types of places if you call and ask/ or search a bit (I think Ikea even sells one natural latex mattress).
  • Tempur pedic!  My back feels so much better!

  • We have a sleep number. Love it because we can each choose what we like and it's easily adjustable based on how we're feeling.

This is our dream mattress!! We're still in the hand-me-down mattress phase but we laid on one when couch shopping and it brought tears to my eyes

We're currently in the same boat. We have an I comfort firm that I did generally like, but I've felt like it's too firm now after sleeping on my side the last three years. We also have a Serra Firm Euro Top in the guest room we've been alternating between, but my damn hips can't seem to catch a break lately!! Has anyone tried the purple mattress? I'm hesitant just because we can't try it until they deliver it since they don't have them in stores. We're also needing to upgrade from a queen to a king as well... now I'm going to go google all of the mattresses y'all have suggested!

Sleep number was one of the legit worst decisions i ever made. I can't wait to get rid of it. I hate it with a PASSION
