Re: Bumpie of the Week 9.7 - mysteryship
What is your first name? Martha (an old fashioned name that I wasn't crazy about as a kid but love as an adult.)
When is your due date? 12/7
What part of the world are you from (be as vague/specific as you want)? I live in upstate New York, originally from Texas.
What number baby/pregnancy is this for you? This will be baby number 1, I was pregnant verrry briefly 10 years ago but chose to end the pregnancy, so technically it's my second time around.
What is your occupation or dream occupation? I'm a farmer, which is also my dream job. But I dream about being a better farmer, growing the farm so that we don't need outside income, and expanding the farm to maybe include more educational aspects so that my job title would move beyond just "farmer". But for now, I grow vegetables and sell 'em.
Does your/will your nursery have a theme or color combination? Hoo boy. We're in the process of buying a big old farmhouse that we can hopefully move into sometime in October. We have to make some tough priority choices on all the renovations it needs, so our current plan for the winter is to close off the drafty upstairs and live in the living room with a wood stove. So baby will sleep there with us for a while, and then if we want to move him before winter's over, it'll just be to a crib in another downstairs room, or even just a partition in the living room. The nursery won't get done until next year, I'm guessing, so I haven't even let myself think about a theme. Knowing our tastes, it'll probably be pretty minimal and gender neutral, with maybe some woodland/animal elements.
Have you bought anything for baby yet? Very little since we're moving. My mom got me a couple of cute Hanna Andersen outfits, my sister gave me a warm outerwear one piece that she doesn't need, and...that's about it. I've got a lot of things bookmarked and I scour craigslist a lot, but I think there's going to be a lot of last minute shopping (really hoping he's not early).
If you have bought things, what is your favorite thing that you have gotten so far? The warm onesie overcoat thingy my sister handed down - it has bear ears and it's adorable.
What is your favorite part of pregnancy so far? Feeling kicks has been pretty amazing - just getting that reminder that there's a person in there, who's already so fully formed, it's a crazy feeling.
Do you have a favorite maternity/baby brand? Old Navy maternity stuff has fit me really well.
One thing you will splurge on this pregnancy? I've been doing yoga, going to a chiropractor, and have asked for a prenatal massage as a birthday present - I feel like those aren't even really splurges since they feel essential to me staying healthy, but they're not things I always spend money on when I'm not pregnant. I also usually just use the plainest, unscented body products but have been craving nice smelling things and have splurged a bit on those.
What are your top pregnancy related priorities? Trying to keep my stress levels down (not always successfully), working on issues that DH and I both have about being parents (I think we're doing great on honestly dealing with baggage from our own childhoods), and trying to appreciate this season before it's over (again, not so successfully).
What is your favorite book? The Little Prince is probably my all-time favorite. I don't know if I'll be able to read it to my kid without crying.
What is your favorite tv show? Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, John Oliver.
What is your favorite movie? Ohh, this is hard. Goodfellas is always the one that comes to mind, because it's insanely well-made and I could watch it all the time. I grew up watching Spaceballs over and over, so it's definitely a nostalgic favorite. And I'm a sucker for anything by Miyazaki.
What is your favorite band/singer? Probably Gillian Welch. Also Lyle Lovett, Townes van Zandt, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle - folky, bluesy, bluegrass, Americana stuff.
Anything else you would like us to know? I'm a huge food nerd - I just finished making smoked garlic powder and I'm beyond excited about it. Also, I'm incredibly grateful for this board - pregnancy has felt a bit lonely, since I don't have many pregnant or child-having friends, and being part of this community has definitely made that better.
Check out Devon Sproule - specifically the albums Keep Your Silver Shined and Upstate Songs. She's my fav.

Another The Little Prince lover here! I put together a puzzle and have it framed for the nursery....and have 4 copies of the book lying around. DH isn't as impressed with the story but we both enjoyed the movie adaptation on Netflix. I have every intention of sobbing through it as my child grows up.
For the smoked garlic, we've got a smoker (make out of a steel drum, DH's baby), and a dehydrator and we experiment with whatever we have laying around. So we smoked a few heads of garlic, dehydrated them for a day, and ground them up - it's potent but really good. We've also been smoking and drying hot peppers. It's what we do for fun in the country
