Which breast pump have you decided on?

These are the ones covered by my insurance. I used a Medela Freestyle with my first and second daughter. I loved it, but was thinking about trying the "hospital grade" consumer options, or something else.

Re: Which breast pump have you decided on?

  • Mine only had Ameda with manual or electric options no other choice and I was getting whatever was covered free

  • Went with Phillips Avent. Great reviews.
  • I wasn't crazy about my Freestyle last time (we have a Symphony at work and it just doesn't compare!) and my insurance gave me an Ameda. I found a PIS very cheap and got one of those too...so, I have 3 pumps but plan to donate two and mainly use the PISA at home and the Symphony at work.

  • I just ordered the Medela Pump in style advanced through my insurance. I've never had a pump before and hoping this was a decent choice
  • I got the Madela Pump In style advanced too, through my insurance. I have heard and read good things about it and did not search more. I am planning to go back to work after three months so I am planning to use it a lot
  • I'm trying to figure this out. I have the medela from last time so I have tons of parts and pieces already, but I've heard better things about the spectra. I'm torn between the two right now.
  • @BmcD2016 and @ZoeFer - my mom is a lactation consultant and that's the one she told me to get. I got it as a baby shower gift because my insurance doesn't cover that one, but I will keep the insurance provided one at home and use the Medela PISA at work once I go back.
  • I have a question for FTMs that have already used Madela PISA . My insurance only covers for the basic parts, which is the pump and collection tubes I believe. I got the Madela Breastmilk storage solution from my Amazon registry but do I need any extra parts to make the life easier ? I will be back at work after 3 months so I think I could wait and see how it works , then order if necessary. But I would love to hear what you found useful, especially to use at work (like everyday) :)
  • @ZoeFer I got the accessory package. Having that little 4 bottle cooler with the ice pack and bottles was awesome. Once I switched to bags I could more easily transport BM, but I also had a fridge in my classroom, so the cooler was just for driving. I also bought an extra pair of flanges. Then I could just clean them once, and didn't have to use cold-out of the fridge flanges in the afternoon. Also get spare membranes. They are good for '3 months' but I found I needed new ones about every month.

  • @ZoeFer I don't know what the insurance pump comes with, but you'll need the basic pieces in which you need to pump (tubing, flanges, bottles, etc). Some things that are helpful are extra membranes (the little white circle pieces that attach to the yellow things - if your pump is losing suction, it's often those that need to be replaced), a battery charger for the car, some form of wipes to keep in your pump bag in case something spills (you can use the breastfeeding ones, but I always just kept a trial pack of sterilizing wipes and let the piece dry thoroughly prior to using), a small lanolin in case of pain (your hospital will probably have a small one, or you may get a sample in one of the registry gift bags), breast pads, a cooler bag and ice pack and how ever many bottles you'll need to pump into for the day.
You may want to consider a hands-free pumping bra. I had the Simple Wishes and found it to be extraneous, but I also have a nice, comfortable place to pump at work - which is such a tremendous help!

  • I have about 4 sets/ pairs of the whole breast attachment part (horns, valves, etc). It is pretty much 8 of everything except the tubes and pump itself. It is nice because I kept an extra set at work, and then I didn't have to rush to dry them and put them in my bag. Plus for the Freestyle flanges, they are the soft fit ones that warp after a few months of sterilization, so I knew I could either go through them or just have more in rotation.

  • I have heard good things about the spectra too, but then I started reading blog/ youtube reviews, and they basically recommended the PISA over the Spectra. They said the spectra was a great pump for the price, and it was quiet. However, most of the reviews said the PISA had a stronger suction, which was my attraction to the spectra in the first place ("hospital grade"). I am also thinking about the fremie because it has those collection cups that are $60 on amazon, and I can connect it to my freestyle :)
