C-section/VBAC Check-In 9-1

Hello Ladies,
I thought I'd start a monthly one of these and see if we needed to go more often.
To start us out I have some basic questions stolen from Oct. I think.

  • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
  • How are you feeling about it?
  • BTDT Moms, any advice?
  • GTKY: What food are your currently craving?
Also if you have any questions for  either VBAC or CS this is a great place to gather information.

Re: C-section/VBAC Check-In 9-1

  • Loading the player...
    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC: well, 26 hr labor, stuck at 5cm for 12 of those hrs. and DD was in distress. Also, my blood pressure was very high. Eventually, she didn't have a heartbeat (w/scalp monitor), so we were off for an emergency c-section. Luckily with the contractions stopped, she was fine, and DH was able to come in for the surgery. She had meconium in her lungs from the stress of labor, but ended up being fine. She weighed 8 lbs 11 oz, and her head was over the 100th percentile- which explains why she couldn't make it out on her own.
    • How are you feeling about it?  this will be my 3rd c-section, the 1st was a very hard and painful recovery. The 2nd was much easier, I walked way sooner. I'm really bleeping nervous about getting another one though, I'm scared something will go wrong. I'm also scared because it is major surgery. I'm scared of the needles, getting cut open, etc. it's scary no matter what.
    • BTDT Moms, any advice? get up and walk as soon as you are allowed, this will help reduce the pain, trust me. Limit your visitors to a single window of maybe an hour, you need your rest and to get to know your baby!
    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving? I have been feeling not that hungry with little cravings lately, it's very unlike me. But I don't want anything to do with ice cream (wtf?) and I want buffalo chicken wings everyday.

  • Last time my water broke but I needed pitocin to get things going.  After 15 hrs I wasn't progressing past 5 cm, was running a fever, and DDs heart rate was not what they wanted it to be.  I would love to try VBAC this time but may not get the chance.  Since I have GD, my dr wants to either induce or do RCS at 39 weeks.

Like PP, I also didn't have that terrible of a recovery last time.  Definitely get up and move as soon as you can, I think that helped me.

I am craving sweets since I can't have any lol...  And wine.

Anyone else with GD already?  I had it last time so they tested me earlier.
  • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:  my c/s birth story is in the birth story string.  It was pretty traumatic for me and I don't want to repeat it.  My vbac was so easy comparatively and I want to have a 2vbac.
How are you feeling about it? Pretty good. The most important part is having a vbac advocating provider.there is actually only one group/hospital that allows vbac in my city. Their stats are ok. They have their rules but my choices are limited.
BTDT Moms, any advice?  Whatever you decide, make sure you are making a truly informed decision.  Take the time to educate yourselves on the true statistics, even if you have to read the acog position statements and the primary literature. Don't be bullied into anything and recognize that in most cases, you have a little time to consider your options.  My Bradley class called it using your BRAIN (benefits, risks, alternatives, intuition, nothing) to navigate birth decisions.
GTKY: What food are your currently craving?  Everything sweet. Trying to get my cravings satisfied with fruit but baby just wants cake.
Also if you have any questions for  either VBAC or CS this is a great place to gather information.
    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
Like I mentioned in the birth story thread, mine was pretty traumatic and ended up in an emergency csection after 23 hours in labor after a failed induction. I am still undecided on the VBAC this go- my OB thinks I'm a candidate but it scares me to try labor again. My thoughts right now are to schedule a csection and if LO comes on his own we will try.
    • How are you feeling about it? Scared and extremely nervous
    • BTDT Moms, any advice? Take the pain medication. It will help.
    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving? All the cookies!!

  • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC: FI has a skin condition called epidermolytic hyperkeratosis, and we really have no way of knowing if this has been passed on to Rhett or not. There are lots of complications with EHK babies and vaginal delivery including dehydration and sepsis. These are risks of the condition anyways but a c-section will be much less risky for him. The vaginal delivery could literally rip/peel what fragile skin he does have right off.

How are you feeling about it? It's very scary not knowing if he has it or not but we're doing what we can to bring him into the world safely. I would have preferred a home birth but I have to realize that having a baby means certain things aren't about me or what I want anymore, it's about what's safest and healthiest for the baby.

GTKY: What food are your currently craving? I've had severe MS all pregnancy so I'm not really into food. If I thought I could keep it down, I'd love a double bacon cheeseburger with ketchup. But my diet mostly consists of apples, grapes, ginger ale, yogurt, soup, etc. Light things that come up easily.
    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC: with dd1 I was induced for pre-e and after 42 hours my heart stopped. A lot went on in that 42 hours that shouldn't have and my new dr is shocked I didn't sue for malpractice. I am doing RCS for a few reasons...main one is the whole dying thing. They brought me back but I would be too scared to go through all of that again. I also feel 42 hours of labor is enough for all the kids I want. I also have placenta previa this time so it may not be a choice but I had my mind up the day after dd1 was born in would be c sections forever.

    • How are you feeling about it? A little nervous about the procedure in general but I'm really glad that it won't  (or shouldn't) be an emergency situation. DH wasnt allowed in the room last time because they didn't think I'd make it so I'm excited that he can be in there this time.

    • BTDT Moms, any advice? Buy grannies panties that are 2 or 3 sizes too big for when you go home. My incision was sooooooooo sensitive I couldn't have a waist band within 2 inches of it. Also get up and walk early it really helps. Set an alarm to pee at least once an hour. I could never tell I needed to pee until I was in so much pain from the full bladder...after a week I figured out the alarm trick and did that for a few weeks. Feeling eventually came back and I didn't need the alarm but omg that hurt. Bent over in pain walking to the potty is not fun. Pee early and pee often.

    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving? Nothing. No foods really sound good anymore. I had been craving boneless buffalo wings but all cravings went away a few weeks ago and food just seems to turn me off.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:

I do not know OFFICIALLY yet what will be the plan. Because I have double uterus and my son's growth might eventually become restricted, and because my anatomy may not support a vaginal delivery, a scheduled c-section certainly appears to be the safer way to go. He is also currently breech (not a concern yet) but may stay that way indefinitely, again, due to my funky anatomy.

How are you feeling about it?

Fine. Just want him to be safe and will do whatever it takes for that. I couldn't control the way I was made and therefore can't control this so why do anything but accept and move on!

GTKY: What food are your currently craving?

    Sweets! Omg it's so bad!

    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
I hope it's ok for me to lurk here--not 100% sure I'm getting a CS yet, but I want to mentally prepare and educate myself in case my BP leaves no other option. I'll find out more as I will go to my OB every week, but the possibility of a scheduled CS or induction is there because my BP has been an issue before 20 weeks--we'll see.

How are you feeling about it?

Still processing that pregnancy is a crazy time and I can only control so much before life and my body do their own thing. Adjusting my expectations of my birth and any expectations I had for myself. I think the more educated I am, the better I will feel--right now it's frustrating and kind of scary for me.
    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving?
I've been craving everything. Can we claim that we are craving an entire grocery store? Cuz I totally am.

For the moms that have BTDT, I hope you don't mind some questions--I'm learning!

    1. Does high BP always mean an induction or CS?
    2. What is the process of a scheduled CS or induction? As in, how is it different from just showing up to the hospital during active labor on your own? (Sorry if that sounds obvious :S )

    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving? Nothing. No foods really sound good anymore. I had been craving boneless buffalo wings but all cravings went away a few weeks ago and food just seems to turn me off.
Glad you didn't die!! How scary, thank goodness for modern medicine, or you and I and my baby would not be here.

About your food GTKY, that's really weird that I'm in the exact same boat. I don't really want to eat anything, I do, but none of it sounds good. Buffalo wings were what I was craving like crazy, but that's pretty much done now. I wonder if we have some sort of condition...

  • @dmontgo I'm pretty sure high BP doesn't always = RCS. I have a friend who just had a baby and her BP was elevated throughout 3rd tri. She had to go in for additional monitoring, but she wound up delivering vaginally just fine!
  • 1. Does high BP always mean an induction or CS? Mine led to an induction, that worked except L was stuck breech. I was induced at 39w+ because I had too much fluid, high BP, and finally protein in my urine. Before then protein my doc wouldn't think of inducing me. 2. What is the process of a scheduled CS or induction? As in, how is it different from just showing up to the hospital during active labor on your own? (Sorry if that sounds obvious :S ) I never had active labor, but a couple 'false alarms'. For the false alarms I was admitted, hooked up to monitors for 2-3 hrs. Then released. For my 'unscheduled' -we knew it was coming in the next 48hrs, I just had a hypertension headache and was told to see if they would admit me- I was admitted, they checked my vitals and when they saw my BP they did a tendon check, then hooked me up to an iv. From there I was put on pit and had my cervix checked every 2-3 hrs. I got the epi within 1.5 hrs of them breaking my water. Other than that I just labored in my room watching Netflix and playing on my laptop. @dmontgo

  • @yellingbanana the condition where pregnancy cravings are buffalo wings is called being awesome!  No idea what that means we are now though.

With my first pregnancy food stopped being desirable around 30 weeks. Probably because that's when having my belly space shared with food and baby was uncomfy. I'm 26 weeks now and already feel that way. Plus, things just seem to taste bland even when there's lots of flavor or spice.

  • @Kate08Young Thank you for sharing--it helps me not be so scared of the unknown if I have an idea of the process. Had you been on BP medication up until that point?

@dmontgo my induction I was 39+ weeks as well. I had gone to l+d a week before to be monitored for labor after I had a splitting headache so that's my only other experience. For that time, I was put in a big Bay type room with others being monitored (nst, early labor, other issues) and hooked up to monitors. Some women went from there to real l+d and others got sent home.

For my induction, I showed up at the scheduled time (0530), was put on an iv, had cervidil placed, then monitored and checked every few hours. I had a terrible induction after that so my details are probably irrelevant to most but it seems the beginning of mine was pretty standard.

Eta: after 12 hours with cervidil I then had pitocin. That's when my body started hating me.

  • @dmontgo I think whether high bp = induction depends on your doc and how high your bp is. It definitely doesn't mean you'll have to have a c/s, although I think if it gets dangerously high that's a possibility. With DS, my bp was borderline high at the end of 3rd tri and my doc pushed induction on my due date. I don't think that's typical, and part of me wishes I'd pushed for some more time. I know you'll ask lots of questions and advocate for yourself!

    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
I had a cs with my son after I was induced on my due date. As I mentioned, my bp was kind of high and doc wanted to induce although I wasn't dilated at all. The induction failed after 24 hours of labor (failure to progress). My son's heart rate was dropping and cs was the best way to go at that time. I'm having a RCS because doc doesn't think I'm a great VBAC candidate and honestly, I'm scared to go through labor again only to end up with  cs, maybe under more dangerous circumstances than before.

how are you feeling about it?

I'm nervous about the surgery but I'm okay with having an RCS. I  feel good about knowing what to expect.

    BTDT advice

My advice is to let go of expectations about the birth as much as you can. The important part is you're about to meet your LO.

As far as recovery,  remembering to take pain meds on time was a big one for me. Very early on, I lost track of time and was very quickly in a ton of pain.

    GTKY

No real cravings here, but my appetite has definitely increased the past couple of weeks. A couple nights I've woken up hungry in the middle of the night. Weird.

  • I agree with @DiFazette and I had a rough recovery because I had so long of labor and other conplications. But overall, it's not *that* bad. There are some things that some people encounter that kinda suck, like numbness around the incision for a long time, or other unexplained pain.

I got most of my feeling back within a few months. If I have DH run his finger directly on my scar or about half an inch on either side, I still can't feel it. And I'd have lots of pulling pain/ scary tissue breaking up pain for about 6 months when I started running again. And something weird that I had: instead of side stitches  (side pain from running), all the pain was on my scar. Nothing to be concerned over, it was just strange.

  • @sourlemon @cjt121413 Thank you ladies for being candid with me--I appreciate all of the knowledge you (and the other ladies) have to share with me!
  • @dmontgo elevated BP witb or without pre-e will 'generally' result in some kind of induction but not always a cesarian.   My BP's were 200/120 before my IV magnesium and other cocktails at 33 weeks and they were willing to induce me for an attempt at vaginal delivery.  The meds stopped working at 34 and had an emergency cesarian.

I only  have sheer chaos to compare to but my doc has explained that induction/scheduled c is a calm, controlled environment.  Now with a c, you know what's going to happen.  You will sign all the forms, probably get pushed back for an emergency or two and finally go in for your spinal while H gets in his scrubs.  With an induction, once those contractions start coming, it's anyone's guess to how your body progresses.  The only main difference between induction and going into labor on your own is how it starts.

@dmontgo well, damn.  I'm sorry to hear that.  I need to check in with that thread more.  Are you now under the care of an MFM/perinatologist?  If not, you should be.  I'm thinking of you and hoping the meds work well and stay leveled out until delivery.  Were your pressures increasing consistently?

  • @DiFazette Yeah...the baby aspirin helped at first but didn't stabilize it the way they had hoped. So when I went today my BP was 147/98. He looked at the past appointment readings and he said that he was putting me on medication immediately with weekly visits so we can get a handle on it before I get the bad symptoms like swelling/fainting. He didn't mention a perinatologist today, but I'm sure he will next Thursday. If by some chance he doesn't, I will ask about it.
  • @dmontgo and in fairness, IF you are diagnosed with pre-e you should be under MFM care.  You can have high BP without pre-e (not likely this early though).  The 24 hour protein catch will tell them which category you are in, for now.  If the results are clear that you're spilling protein, you should be under care of a specialist.  One day at a time, my friend.  It's a lot to take in.

  • @dmontgo I ended up on bp meds 4 months after birth last time for a year. I'm sure you've researched/ talked with Dr or pharmacist about side effects but when I was on them I got light headed super easily. Especially going from laying down to standing. That can lead to falls which can be bad in pregnancy. So my advice here is to sit up for a minute, stand up while holding something, and wait a minute to make sure you are ok......at least until you adjust to the meds. Took me a few weeks to adjust so I just had to be careful for a while.

    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
I had an emergency CS with DS due to discovering he flipped to breach after I'd been induced and in labor 14hrs. My OB practice doesn't do VBACs, not an option
    • How are you feeling about it?
I'm fine with it. I had a pretty easy recovery and am not scared or concerned to do it again. I did have 1 issue during the surgery with referred pain but it was over quickly and now I'm prepared if it happens again
    • BTDT Moms, any advice?
Def get up and walk asap and as often as is appropriate. I only took the "good" drugs the first dose after surgery, after that no narcotics, no Tylenol3 or anything super strong - I was nursing and didn't want that in my system - and I was fine. I'm not saying there was zero pain or discomfort but I have a high pain tolerance and, for me, it was manageable

GTKY: What food are your currently craving?
No one thing. Ditto cereal, that's been about a week or two now what I've been eating the most of

    ***edited for additional questions***

    1. Does high BP always mean an induction or CS?
I had high BP, was taken out of work 3wks early and put on modified bed rest bc of it, and was only induced bc I went to full term and only had a CS bc he was breach
    2. What is the process of a scheduled CS or induction? As in, how is it different from just showing up to the hospital during active labor on your own?
My scheduled induction I was told to be at the hospital at X time, went straight up to L&D, changed, got hooked up and was up and running. Super relaxed. Took a nice long shower, washed my hair really well and ate a good meal before going in. Scheduled CS will be similar - planned and prepped for. It's nice actually

@dmontgo I was never on BP mess last time. I adore my doc, but he is just a family doc and couldn't do many things to fix/prevent issues. He had to wait until an actual OB gave permission, after viewing my chart, to have me induced when I went in.

ETA:  Now that I think about it, I guess I can say I did have a 'scheduled' experience from when they put in my cerclage.    I went from the MFM to the hospital, I had to be monitored to make sure no contractions going on. After that 24 hrs it was basically a walk-in, get changed, wait in the OR, get the spinal (that hurt worse than my epi& pit contrax combined), then just chill/chat with the anast. guy. Then I was wheeled into recovery for like 1 hr, then back up to make sure everything was ok/no contractions or further dilations/effacing.

    • Tell us a bit about why you having a c-section, repeat c-section, or a VBAC:
I had a myomectomy last year to remove fibroids within the uterine wall, so the risk of rupture is there.
    • How are you feeling about it?
I was actually relieved when I was told I would be scheduled. I know a lot of people who have had scheduled c sections and all of them had only great things to say. On the other hand I've heard horror stories about being in labor for hours or days and ending up with an emergency CS. The calm, controlled environment of a scheduled surgery is much more appealing to me. Plus, major surgery is a lot less scary to me than the idea of labor. Without modern medicine I never would have gotten pregnant to start with, and I certainly don't trust my body to "do what it's supposed to do."
    • GTKY: What food are your currently craving?
I second the buffalo wings all day every day!
  • @dmontgo I missed your Q about meds... I took all of them... Yay!  Some worse than others but my most common side effects were dizziness, nausea, and exhaustion.  That was generally for the first 3-4 weeks while my body adjusted.  In My case, adjustment never really happened so for a while prior to birth and years post birth we added and dropped meds on the regular.  The first few weeks are the hardest.

  • I was freaking out yesterday, but this thread has really calmed me, especially about the scheduled birth aspect. I don't know what will happen yet, but it seems a lot less scary than I imagined.

Also keeping an eye on the side effects and letting DH and my OB know so the can keep an eye on me.
  • @dmontgo I had high BP with DD 1, pre-e, and the dr. just let it happen. I'm looking back and thinking I got totally screwed in a few ways. I was also on state medical insurance at the time and am pretty sure I was being shuffled to the side. So I can tell you from experience that high BP doesn't mean CS but my poopy experience was also 10 yrs ago. My scheduled c-section was 5 years ago, and that was way amazing compared to laboring for 26 hrs first! Take note though, many of the emergency or unplanned c-sections on here started as failed inductions...
Anyways, to your question, going in for a scheduled c-section and scheduled induction (failed) is all I know. But the 2 weren't terribly different as far as arrival in that you go to the birthing center check in, tell them why you are there, they take you to a room, you change, vitals, IV, then for c-section take you to the operating room (for induction take you to a birthing room). That's where they'll give the spinal, shave your stomach and hooha, and get down to surgery.
While there is recovering from a c-section, there is also recovery from vaginal delivery. Either way the baby needs to come out and the chances of some sort of pain are about 100%. Unless you are Wonder Woman. Or elastagirl! Lol. Don't be scared though, it is so worth it when you get your little one in your arms- best feeling in the world!

  • @yellingbanana Thank you for sharing! I'm kind of starting to feel that if my OB gives me a choice between induction or CS that the CS is the better choice. It seems like the inductions tend to fail to progress, so then there is exhaustion and then a CS happens anyway...unless I'm being obtuse about it? It seems that if your body isn't ready to labor on its own, an induction won't really help? Pardon my ignorance on this.
  • @dmontgo I'm NO expert- but I think it may depend on if your body is progressing naturally on it's own to begin with or if you're starting from 0% effaced, 0 cm dilated (Or maybe there isn't a hard and fast "rule" to it). I'm sure your doc has some wisdom for you there though! Personally, I'll be making a (and I'm using this word lightly!) "plan" for each scenario- spontaneous labor, induction, and c-section for the time being until we get closer to d-day and have more info.

Planned CS DEFINITELY seem like the calmer/more peaceful choice compared to a lot of scenarios....

  • @dmontgo I had what is termed as a successful induction- just cs because L stuck breech about halfway through my cervix. I think a big difference is how dilated, effaced, and soft your cervix is. I was like a 4 dilated, 90% effaced, and super soft, so I was a great candidate for my induction.

  • I was dilated to 1cm and 20% effaced when I went in for my failed induction.

  • @dmontgo - my SIL had a successful induction at 38 weeks for cholestasis but I have no idea if she was dilated or effaced.  I think it's worth talking with your doctor about when or why they would declare an induction a failure and go to C-section.  I bet this varies a lot from hospital to hospital and provider to provider.  I'd probably ask how frequently inductions end up in C-sections for them specifically.  Hopefully it doesn't come to all of this for you (since I know it's not what you want) but I agree - it's definitely better to be prepared for any option.
  • @dmontgo I've read that induction has a failure rate of 40% with a bishop score <5 and that induction essentially doubles your risk of c/s.
