I am a FTM 41 weeks 1 day and will be induced at 41w4d. I was offered either the Foley Bulb catheter or Cytotec but am having trouble making a decision. I have done some online research and contacted my doctor but I was wondering if anybody could share their personal experiences with either method. Thank you!!

Re: Foley Bulb or Cytotec Induction

  • I was induced with Cytotec.  Did 2 rounds of it every 4 hours.  The first round brought on slight contractions after walking and the second one brought on stronger ones.  Then pitocin was used which really made the contractions stronger. Overall I had a positive induction and ended up with no epidural since I progressed so quickly.  This was my first pregnancy as well and when I went in for induction I was only 1cm dilated.

  • I would also recommend cytotec. I've had two inductions now at 41+ weeks and had success both times with cytotec (aka misoprostol).

  • I was just induced using Cytotec. I had 2 rounds, 4 hours apart.  It brought on contractions that really weren't bad. I was able to walk the halls to get things moving. Once I was 3cm, the Dr broke my water, and things progressed on their own from there.  I had a really positive experience with induction by Cytotec.
  • I had cervidil to start with and then the Foley bulb. It was VERY painful to insert but it worked very well for me and I had a successful induction (I was induced at 37 weeks and started out 90% effaced and zero dilation).
  • Cytotec (orally) got me from no progress to delivery in less than 8 hours. I recommend the epidural as I thought I was going to die after the contractions started!

Thank you for your responses ladies! My doctor recommended I try the Foley so I had it inserted this morning. For anyone curious in the future, the insertion was a little uncomfortable but not as bad as I was anticipating. Cervical checks usually hurt for me and it felt similar. I was only half a centimeter dilated and she had to use a speculum for the insertion. It was inserted about an hour ago and I am having contractions that feel like bad period cramps. I will update!
