Heart defect

We just received devastating news yesterday. Our baby has something wrong with his heart. I was in shock and not even sure what exactly was said, but understood that there is a hole in one of the lower chambers and that it will most likely require surgery. The doctor would not give me a diagnosis and we are seeing a cardiologist on Friday. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't know how to cope. I cried all day yesterday and feel like crying more at work.

Re: Heart defect

  • I don't have any personal experience with this, but I just wanted to offer my support.

My cousin's daughter was born with a heart defect and underwent surgery at a few months old. She's now a healthy, thriving 3-year-old.

I am so sorry this is happening, but there is SO MUCH doctors can do for tiny babies. It's absolutely crazy! Hopefully the cardiologist will be able to give you an outlook and some peace of mind. Good luck and hang in there!

  • I don't have any personal experience with this, but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry you and your LO are going through this. I do have a friend whose baby had to have open heart surgery at 6 months old last year, and she is now a crazy, thriving 14 mo/old who is ahead on most of her milestones. I hope that time can pass quickly for you until Friday when you can get more answers. You're in my thoughts, and please know we're all here rooting for you and your LO.

  • I'm very sorry to hear this @NinaLCC. I can't imagine how scary this must be. I don't have any experience personally but I do have a friend who's son had to undergo heart surgery right after birth and he is a happy and healthy 4 year old now. Hopefully you get some reassuring news from the cardiologist.

  • I'm sorry this is happening. Like others have said, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. There are so many types of congenital heart defects, from very very mild to more serious. But, even if they are serious, the pediatric cards surgeons can do amazing things now and these kids go on to live normal lives :)
  • @NinaLCC, I'm so sorry you are going through this. I'm also just here to offer my support. A friend of mine's daughter had to have open heart surgery 1 week after birth. That was 8 years ago, and she is a perfectly healthy, thriving older sister to two healthy sisters. You are in my thoughts. I hope you are able to get solid answers and next steps at your appointment on Friday. We are here for you and lifting up you and your LO.
  • I have no experience but I wanted to offer my support. Sending you big (creepy internet) hugs.

  • I am so sorry. Just lots of prayers for you.
  • I just wanted to offer my support as well! My best friend is a NICU nurse and she always tells me the sooner the doctors figure out the problem, the better the outcome. With that said, I know you will still worry and cry until Friday (just try to keep everyone's words somewhere in your head). Please keep us updated when you see the cardiologist!

I'm so so sorry you're going through this! My anatomy scan found a potentialMy serious issue as (and I'm currently waiting to have an appt with a fetal medicine specialist) so I know how you're feeling. Though I don't have advice for how to make you feel better (besides trying to think positive, which I know is hard! Also don't google!) I'm thinking of you! I really hope the consultant appointment is positive and baby will be okay!

Sending lots of prayers and good thoughts your way! No personal experience, but had friends go through something similar with their son.

His heart problem was diagnosed at the A/S and they had to switch doctors and deliver at a different hospital than originally planned just in case he needed surgery right away. He was born, and while he was monitored very closely, never needed surgery and is now a healthy 3 year old!

I hope the the cardiologist can give you more information and help you through this.

My brother was born with a hole in his heart and he didn't get surgery. Not sure if he needed it when he was born I just know that he never underwent the surgery. He is now 40, works in construction, and SMOKES -- crazy man!--.

One of my friends found out her baby has a hole in her heart and that it will require surgery after the baby is born in September. From what the docs said, it's relatively common and a lot of babies have holes in their hearts that close before they are even born.

  • No applicable experience, but I am so, so sorry that you're going through this. The uncertainty has to be the worst, and I hope they're able to provide clarity and reassurance soon. As others have said, modern medicine is so advanced and your baby will be in good hands. Sending positive thoughts your way!

  • Thinking of you!  I know a boy born with a hole in his heart that had surgery as an infant. He is doing wonderfully now.

  • Hugs mama. We're all here for you.  I also know a baby that was born with congenital heart defects, has had multiple surgeries and is thriving at 2.  Modern medicine can do truly amazing things.  And like PPs have said, sometimes the hole heals on its own before the baby is even born.  Hopefully you have a good appointment with the cardiologist on Friday and get the answers you need.  Lots of good thoughts for you and LO!

  • My son is 16 months old with a hole in his heart (VSD). A nurse heard a murmur when he was two days old. I know the thought is super scary! We see a cardiologist every six months to moniter the size of the hole. Depending on the type of defect and size determines the need for surgery. Advanced medical technology is amazing. I hope you are able to receive more information/answers at your upcoming  appointment. Surgery is not necessary for our situation because the size isn't causing any other complications. My son is an active boy with no physical limitations. I often think medical professionals prepare us for he worst case scenario until more information is gathered. Which is nerve wracking!  I wanted to share our experience because I can relate with being worried/scared. Hugs!
  • I am so sorry to hear this! Sending prayers and positive thoughts your way!
  • I'll be thinking of you--I hope it turns out to be a fairly mild issue.
Do you have someone you can. take with you to the consult who will be able to help you remember what the doctor says?  It can be hard to take it all in when you're feeling emotional and having an extra person could help you digest it better once you're home.

  • T&P for you.  I have no personal experience but we have a family friend who's little guy needed surgery on his heart after birth regarding something found in her A/S.  I think he only had 3 chambers if I remember correctly.  He had a few follow up surgeries but is now a happy and healthy 3 year old who does everything his big brother and sister do.
  • T&P and heathy vibes for your boy!
  • Sending hugs and good wishes! It's amazing what surgeons can do these days, even if surgery is needed, don't lose hope. We're all thinking of you!
  • I  am so sorry girl... I am with everyone else. Doctors now can do soooo much, but I also know the what 'can be' is not always comforting. I not only pray for your baby's health, but also you mental stability and comfort.  Hang in there.

I don't have personal experience with this but I do know someone who's Son was diagnosed with 3 rare heart defects during an ultrasound. He was also born at 32vweeks which made things more complicated. The little guy fought and is doing great at 2 years. He has had a few surgeries but is thriving.
