TTC After a Loss

No Follow Up Apt after D&C?

For those of you that had to have a D&C did you have a follow up apt after or an apt before you started TTC again?

My D&C was an emergency one after losing too much blood too quickly during my M/C.  So the OB I saw was not my own and other than some general advice he didn't say anything when they released me after surgery and didn't say I needed any follow up.

Im a little over a week post surgery and I am starting to feel pretty good other than a few symptoms left from losing so much blood.  We plan to wait until I have at least one period before TTC but I worry about my betas returning to zero, my iron and hemoglobin levels and my uterine lining thickness.  So I'm thinking about calling to schedule a follow up but I also feel silly because I feel like I'm just over obsessing since my loss maybe.

Is it normal to not have a follow up?

Re: No Follow Up Apt after D&C?

  • I think it is normal to have a follow up after all surgical procedures! Including a D&C... I know having a follow up with my OB really helped because I was able to have some time to process everything and ask meaningful questions. It doesn't hurt to call and ask for an appointment. Plus, they will want to make sure everything is healing, no tissue is retained, etc.

I had a follow up and then another follow up a couple months later before we took the dive to TTC again.

  • I had a D&C because they thought I was having a molar pregnancy, but it ended up just being a missed miscarriage.  I had a follow-up two weeks later.  The follow-up sounded pretty important since that's when they check to see how everything looks and to make sure there were no complications from the surgery (like you would have any surgery follow-up).  Also, my doctor benched me for one cycle, but some still insist on 3 (sometimes more).  So I would definitely recommend calling your doctor to find out what they want you to do!

  • Thanks ladies.  I thought it seemed weird that they didn't recommend a follow up but I think I really want one even just for piece of mind.

I didnt have a D&C, just misoprostol, but my OB saw me twice after that- ultrasounds both times. During the last ultrasound she was able to measure the thickness of my endometrial lining and based on that she cleared me to try again once we decided we were ready emotionally. It was very reassuring to see/hear that my body had recovered.

I had a two week follow up after my d&c. They check for infection and to make sure everything looked ok. No blood work follow up. At that point i was given the okay to start ttc
  • I had a followup with both D&Cs. It was basically a formality. With my second loss we talked about meeting with an RE. My OB wanted to see me again before we TTC, but I'm not sure I will go in before we are knocked up again.
  • Thanks ladies! I called and they said they did want a follow up.  Since I had my D&C as an emergency and not scheduled I think things just got mixed up. Not sure what they will do.  I had my next prenatal apt already set up for next week so they just repurposed it.  I might have cried on the phone when the receptionist said that.
  •  <3 I'm sorry for your loss. My first prenatal appointment was to be rescheduled for just a blood test but after I came home after learning the terrible news I got a call from the receptionist confirming the previous appointment. If MC is as common as they tell me you'd think they would have policies in place to prevent these slipups.  :(

My post-DC was also just a formality. Explained what happened and my steps from there. I was surprised that was all that happened.

  • I am sorry for your loss and that you find yourself here. But this is a great group of ladies and has been really helpful.

I had 2 D&C's, well 3 (3rd was for retained tissue), and I had follow-up visits about 2 weeks after for all of them. Like most PP said it really is just a formality, but it is a great time to ask any questions you might have with the process going forward... like will they do early u/s if you want them and so on. They also did beta hcg to follow them down to zero before saying that we could start trying again. This is how we figured out that I had retained tissue.

  • I had a 4-week follow-up. It was pretty pointless. She didn't physically examine me, she just chatted with me.
