Do you guys give bottles in the crib?

My LO still takes 1-2 bottles in the night (formula). I've been sleeping in the same room as him lately (on vacation) and am also sick. So I've just been making a bottle and giving it to him to hold/drink himself. Anyone else doing this? I know you're not supposed to bc of ear infections and teeth, but damn I need sleep

Re: Do you guys give bottles in the crib?

  • Nope, never have and I wont do it. My brother and I had bottle rot because my mom allowed it when we were babies

  • No, I never have either. We weened off night feeds a couple of months ago (a process to say the least but soooo worth it, now LO sleeps through the night.) I have terrible teeth so I'm really cautious with caring for his. Teeth brushing is the last thing we do before bed every night.

  • No, I don't either. Jakey's a terrible sleeper, so I sympathise big time with regards to sleep deprivation! He also has a bottle or two at night, but I take him out his cot to feed. I just wouldn't feel comfortable with it. Also, ear infections are  extremely painful in adults, so I'd hate for him to end up with one as a result of letting him feed himself.

Hang in there, love. I hope your little guy's  sleeping improves, and you feel better soon.
  • No never have. If he eats at night, I hold him.
  • No, it's really bad for the teeth and it can be a really hard habit to break. My LO will be one in a couple of days and it's only been for the last month he started sleeping through the night consistently. Sometimes he wakes up but he is able to self soothe within just a few seconds. I would try really hard not to make bottles in the crib a thing, especially since it's best to be done with bottles by 1.

  • We don't do bottle sin the crib, but during the day, that's pretty much how he drinks every bottle - laying on the floor holding it himself.  knock on wood it's been 3 months or so and no problems yet.

Same here. Only during the day I gave her bottles (now sippies) on the floor to drink by herself (she can't seem to figure out the tilting while upright). We haven't had issues but I never thought it could be an issue. Is it bad even if they don't fall asleep to the bottle (so no residual milk in mouth)?

  • We don't feed him at night at all. Last bottle around 7-7:30 and then nothing again til 7am or so. I was told at this age they should be able to go all night without any issues so if they are still waking and eating it's habit or comfort and has nothing at all to do with needing to actually eat. Can you just wean off night feeds like @shelbydd
  • Guilty! I put Piper in her crib with her last bottle of the night. We haven't had any issues. She lays on the floor & drinks them during the day. Also, when I nursed, I pretty much did the side laying position everytime for 6 months.

This is a mommy judgement call. If it works for you & your baby, and you aren't having any issues, more power to you!
  • It sounds like that's not what you normally do and that you are sick and away from home. I think if it helps you get well then you do what you have to do. I've never given a bottle in his crib but he has been holding them while lying down on the floor or in baby jail(his pnp) for months.

  • We don't at night but I have done it sometimes if he wants a bottle at 5:30 or 6 am.  It gives me some extra time to sleep in and he usually goes back to sleep for an hour or so after.  I did the same thing with DS1. I also just let him drink his own bottles during the day like PPs, DS2 would never stay still for me to hold him through an entire bottle.
  • If she wakes up while I'm still getting ready in the mornings, I'll give her one in her crib, but not at night. We don't really do night feeds anymore but when we do, I'll hold her or put her in bed with me.
  • Our last bottle of the night is at around 6:50, and then nothing until 7 a.m.  We still hold him and the bottle, if he tries to hold it he doesn't seem to get the angle right, and ends up turning the bottle upside down and then it drips all over everything...huge mess!!

He finishes his last bottle in his crib, then I wipe down his gums (still no teeth!) and he rolls over and goes to sleep. He will only eat his bottles on the floor now, he hates being confined by being held.....who has time for that!?! ;)
  • Thanks all. We're still sick, but home now and back to our normal routine (no crib bottles). My dental heigenist (however it is spelled!!) friend confirmed that only water in the crib is okay, so I'm going to try that

    My guy is the same!
  • @FatPony a bottle in the crib has saved my life!!  I exclusively pump for DD and I started giving her her bottle with her in the crib probably almost two months ago now. At first it was all breast milk and I slowly started mixing it with a couple of of water more and more each night/week so she would get used to water before bed (DD wasn't a big fan of water). Now she will take just water and she will just drink that but I do take her bottle out when she falls asleep. I also brush her teeth in the morning and at night with the nuby finger brush. Do what works for you girl!
  • The only way I can get my LO to relax and calm down at night is a warm bottle before bed. Especially after we threw out the pacis.
  • Last night husband decided to put a bottle of water in with baby thinking that maybe he wakes up because he's thirsty rather than hungry. With a sample size of only one night I'm going to say he was right. We only got up once last night and the first thing baby wanted was water (he wanted a boob next, but baby steps).
