How to deal with a climber??

I have a monkey child.  She likes to climb on everything, her favorite thing right now being the kitchen table.  We've tried everything with the exception of moving the chairs out of the kitchen entirely (timeout, redirection, etc).  She's almost 16 months old.  Daycare is also concerned as she climbs the little table there as well as onto the windowsills (they are fairly low, but wide enough to sit on).

She's fallen several times at Daycare, and we're just waiting for a broken arm or some sort of nasty gash to the head if we don't catch her in time at home.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get her to stop?  Thanks for your help!

  • On the surfaces that you can use double sided tape. Logan hated being sticky but loved to climb on my 100 year old hope chest. So I would used double sided tape or velco. He hated that too.

  • Interesting! I wonder if that would work for DD. She loves to climb on anything she can, and short of removing everything in our house that's over 6 inches tall we can't seem to find anything to keep her from doing it :)

  • That's certainly something I hadn't thought of!  Velcro seems to be a favorite of hers too...she takes off her shoes and like to chew on the velcro.  I think it must feel good on sore teething gums.  :)

  • You got a climber too... ugh I no just what your going through.  At DD daycare they had to rearrange the room because of her.  All they can say is "WOW! we've never had a baby like her before" .  She even climbs up into the high chair if the tray is off and if the tray is on the dangles from it.  I no it wont be long and we will be at the ER.  I've tryed everything and nothing works.  She has even figured out how to move stuff over to give her help if its to tall for her to climb on. GL!!! you'll need it

  • Well, climbing is a 16 month old "milestone". You should encourage them to climb but climb on the RIGHT things!  Show your child was is ok to climb on and what we don't climb on.  My suggestion would be to get and indoor slide or some big soft blocks.
