What bottles do you use?

Im brewing baby #3, and it's time to buy new bottles.. but im thinking about switching brands. Previously used Avent with both of my boys and have no major complaints but I feel there are a lot of advances out there that keep the air out etc and I'm just curious to see what other moms use and why?

*I did with my others and plan this time to breastfeed, but use bottles pretty regularly when I work or am not around (I guess that's obvious haha)

Re: What bottles do you use?

  • I settled on Avent Naturals and they worked well. DD hated Dr. Browns, plus those have so many parts which are a pain to wash! The Avent Naturals just have nipple, collar, and bottle, and they are vented so it helps with gas. I breastfed and she only got bottles when someone else was watching her and the shape of the nipple is supposed to be similar to the breast. Never had any problems with them, but we all know babies can be picky so your may hate what mine loved.

Yes I went through a couple different brands with each of them, it's totally dependent on the baby's preference! I'm just hoping to get some good advice on all the different brands out there..I like the heads up on all of the pieces to wash with Dr. Browns, that would get annoying! @meq124
  • No input since DS is almost 5, but excellent question. We used Dr. Browns for a nanosecond because the parts were a total PITA to clean and then ended up using Playtex VentAire. And now they've totally changed the design so I can't get spare parts for the bottles I saved. We'll be switching to something different....

  • I used the Dr. Brown's for about five months until I finally got fed up with washing those awful little pieces. Now we use Avent and Tomee Tipee.

  • Good question! Following.  I tried four different brands with DD1, and she never took a bottle. Just hoping this one will!!!
  • Thankfully we didn't have to go through a hundred bottles before my little guy decided on which one he liked. We went with Tommee Tippee and had no troubles. No nipple confusion either.
  • DD never had any trouble going from breast to bottle and back. We used the kiinde system for a while but she out grew the 5 ounce max on the pouches at 3 months. It was very convenient for storing and reheating breast milk. Now we mostly Tommee Tippee bottles. We also have Avent Naturals but she tends to make a mess when feeding herself with those.
  • We actually used Dr. Brown's for DS. DH was actually in charge of cleaning every night, but he never complained. It was just a couple extra pieces, and if you rinse soon after you use it helps with cleaning later.

We used the Playtex Drop Ins because, although we had to buy refills, we only had to clean the nipples and never had to worry about sterilizing the bottles. My Medela pump adapted to the bottles and I could pump right into them for storage. Also, the inserts are collapsible which reduces gas in the wee one's tummy.
ETA: We never experienced nipple confusion and were lucky that we never had to try anything else. We will plan on using them again.

  • I always recommend buying one of a couple because you never know what yourkidwill like. I had a bunch of avent bottles, but turns out ds only would drink from Playtex!!

  • My advice is just buy 1 of a few kinds. We literally went through every bottle on the market with my son I think. He never took one. We used Platex Nursers for my daughter.
  • DS liked MAM but to be honest we only ever used the freebies we got from stores..I stay at home so regular BF was just easier
  • Tommee Tippee over here for school boobs for home lol

  • Dr Browns. I agree with PP, I would rinse them and then they were easy to clean after that. I used the medela steam clean bags (meant to clean breast pump stuff, I used it for pump and bottles) to wash the bottles and never had to worry about clean the individual parts.

  • I used Evenflo glass bottles from BRU. They are compatible to pump into using a Medela pump, and then go right in the dishwasher since they're glass, not plastic. Plus they won't degrade or etch, and because they're glass, milk can be warmed up really quickly.
  • We use and love the kiinde system. Pump.directly into bags (which have never leaked). Bags become bottles. You're only left with a nipple to clean! Baby not like the kiinde nipples? The system comes with adapters to use all common brands. Pretty universal with most pumps too.

@vino831 @mrsnc I've never heard of the kiinde system! I will be researching it tonight!
  • My daughter wouldn't take a bottle at all! Other than the nipples meant for cleft palate (she didn't have cleft palate) that fit on the pre made bottles of formula our hospital provided. We had to buy the formula, dump it just for the little bottles, they were horribly hard to find and we eventually couldn't get them at all, so that was the end of bottle feeding. The ones I liked the most were Avent because they fit my pump and super simple to clean, but what I like doesn't matter if Baby doesn't... I picked up a few of the Avent naturals anyways to try with this LO. Fingers crossed.
  • We did Medela bottles with DD1. She liked them but they were so expensive andthe tiny hole would close so you are supposed to change them every 4-6 months. (This is what the manufacturer to me on the phone) Well I did not want to spend that fortune again so we have been using Avent for DD2 and DD3. No complaints. I think it's just as good as the Medela (at a quarter of the price).
  • Tommee Tippee over here. DS never had an issue with them from day 1
  • We used Tommee Tippee with slow flow nips and they were great. I want to try a Como Tomo this go round because #fancy

We used Dr. Brown's. They were the only ones that worked to prevent gas for DD. We rinsed the bottles right after use and we have the Dr. Brown's bottle sterilizer which I highly recommend. I was just at BRU and it looks like they have a new line of Dr. Brown's where using the air funnel/vent piece is optional. Thinking about trying those out.

*Quick Note: Every baby is different and will have different preferences. My neighbor used Dr. Brown's with her first and her second baby will not use them at all. It's best to get sample bottles of a few brands and see which one works for LO.

ditto to this- definitely get a few different sets, babies can be picky little creatures :) We went through avent, dr browns, tommee tippee, playtex, etc, before we found the ones that worked for us!

  • we used Playtex with drop ins. loved not having to sterilize the bottles and being able to squeeze the air out. Plan on trying them again,  however also getting a few others to try in a pinch just incase they don't take to them

  • We used tommee tippee. Dd wasn't very picky on bottles or nipples. We tried multiple brands and we went with tommee tippee because they were on sale when we made the commitment. We really liked como tomo but I wasn't interested in spending a ton of money to keep a good supply of bottles.
  • We mainly used Tommee Tippee and will use them again. The Dr. Brown bottles were annoying to wash but worked well for us, too.

  • I'm less than two years out of the bottle stage and I had to think irrationally hard to remember the answer to this question.  We used Dr. Browns with DD so we'll probably use those just because we have them.
  • Bottle related question: Do you all sterilize bottles between each use or just wash in hot soapy water? I've heard recommendations for both. I know you should sterilize when you first purchase the bottles, but is it necessary to do that between each feeding?

@BelcherEars  We definitely sterilized before first use, and we would sterilize the nipples every night, but the rest of it nah. I would (try to remember to) do it once a week. That didn't always happen as DS got close to a year old.

ETA - DS is a daycare kid and was sick a lot that first year or so... sterilizing the bottle nipples helped me feel better about trying to keep him healthy.

  • The first and only bottles we used were also Dr. Brown's.  They are great, but ditto on washing the parts.  It wasn't so bad only having to wash 3 a day when LO went to daycare and I was still BFing.  When I stopped and it became more bottles, it became a major PITA.  I am so sick of washing them and working on transitioning to sippy cups now just so we don't have to wash bottles anymore.

I also stopped sterilizing pretty early on.  I did after each wash for the first few weeks.  I am not a germaphobe and once LO started putting any and everything in his mouth, I stopped sterilizing.

  • @BelcherEars Our doc said that they should be sterilized before every use until the baby starts putting hands/feet in mouth. I did not know this for DD1 or DD2 so I sterilized, like a fool, for a year each. DD3 started putting hands in her mouth around 3 mos old so that's when I stopped.
  • We only used Dr Brown's. The parts were a pain, but DS likes them so we stuck with them. He was completely off bottles at 1 so it was only a year. I plan on using Dr Brown's again.

  • DD #1 used Playtex drop ins. They were what my sister gave me, so never had an issue. DD #2 was EBF for almost 2.5 months before we introduced a bottle and pumped milk. I tried about 30 different brands and the only one she would take were Tommie Tippie. It'll be time for all new bottles with baby #3 so we will see what works, as I plan to EBF again.
  • I've been lurking this thread a bit... anyone know which of these brands work with the Medela pump? I love the idea of Kiinde, but wonder what will happen if baby doesn't want to BF and if it's at all plausible to mix formula with the system. I've heard mixed things about the Medela bottles, so I'm just looking at all the options. Any additional feedback would be great :)

Tbh I used the medela pump but not bottles. I used storage bags to freeze the milk.

My personal experience: I had to scald my milk anyway because of too much lipase breaking down all the milk fat and making the milk gross within 12 hours, so it all came out of the bottle I pumped into anyway. (It was still perfectly fine, but fat is what keeps milk from tasting like dish soap, lol.)

  • With my son we tried every bottle: dr. Brown, Tommy tippe, avent etc. My son was very gassy and after months of the bottle shuffle we discovered the Playtex bottles with the plastic liner. This allowed us to be able to actually squeeze out all of the air from the bottle and we saw a major improvement. I have not even thought too much about bottles this time around yet but may just try the same ones first and see how it goes!

Doesn't dully answer your q: My DD never took a bottle... But I still used my kiinde storage bags and adapter once she was older for doing homemade puréed food "pouches" -  love them!
