Possible RH Incompatibility **Updated - TW, loss mentioned**

I have been having light pink spotting on and of since Tuesday night, but today at work it started showing red. I called my doctor and we talked awhile. Not having any period like cramps, just the blood is abnormal, so she thinks my blood type may be incompatible with the baby's.

She ordered a blood test and we are going to go over everything tomorrow at my appointment with the doctor to see if we can find the little ones heartbeat and see if I need to take some medicine.

It was real difficult to calm down after the blood test, I am just so scared as a ftm... I know I shouldnt stress, but its hard...

Has anyone here had this problem?

TRIGGER WARNING UPDATE: Ultrasound today, I knew something was off. The baby looked to tiny and wasnt moving, and then the tech said "I'm so sorry. The baby stopped growing at 7 weeks, and there is no heartbeat."

I feel numb. Asked for a picture as a keep sake, and my body started the process nautrally right after the ultrasound with cramps painful as sin and bleeding. I dont know what to expect from here as the doctor hasnt gotten a hold of me yet for it.

I will miss you all, and wish everyone the best. Take care, everyone.

  • I'm sorry, that sounds stressful.  I know someone who had RH incompatibility with her pregnancy.  Her baby was born totally healthy.  Sorry I don't know details of whether she had bleeding and what they did for her during her pregnancy, just wanted to let you know that I know a story where everything turned out just fine.

  • Im sorry that youre stressed. I had RH incompatibility with DD and it didn't affect anything. I had to get a rhogam shot at 28 weeks, and another after she was born. That was it. Sending good vibes and hoping everything turns out well!

  • It may sound scary, but it isn't that big of a deal.  This is the one subject that I would suggest researching, try googling rhogam shot and that site should give you quite a bit of information. Basically negative blood types lack a protein that positive types have.  If negative blood comes in contact with a positive blood type it starts to create an antibody to defend the body against the protein.  The Rhogam shot prevents this.  If all goes well you get the shot around 28 weeks.  However, if you are bleeding you want to get the shot as soon as possible (which it sounds like you are).  Good luck and I hope everything is ok!
  • Thank you all for the information. I will look up the shot, but its wonderful to hear that all should be well if thats what is happening. I will do my best to keep calm, and keep this thread updated with anything I find out.

  • I am O negative and have to get the rhogam shot. With my son I had a lot of bleeding at 6 weeks so I got the shot then and then again at 28 weeks to be safe.  I think they also give it after birth sometimes.  I cannot remember.  Totally not a big deal though!

I have a negative blood type, so I was given the rhogam shot at 28 weeks. After my son was born, I was given it again because he ended up having a positive blood type. Try not to worry!

  • @SoraLk I hope the bleeding turns out to be nothing and that you have a healthy baby growing for you!

The things you never think about until you are pregnant! What is the deal with having a negative blood type and why would that affect your pregnancy? I'm A- and I haven't had anything mentioned to me about this being a complication? What happens if you don't get those shots? I'm so intrigued!
  • I am O negative and I just got the rhogam shot my last pregnancy...its not a big deal.

@schumerator basically if you are negative and your baby is positive- then your blood types will be incompatible when your blood mixes together (ie when you give birth or have bleeding for any reason during pregnancy). Do you know your husbands blood type? If he is negative too then there isn't a problem at all because it would be highly impossible for your baby to be positive. Again you get the rhogam shot prior to birth and sometimes after birth and all is usually well.
  • @Schumerator I hope so too. Thank you!

I've calmed down, but the bleeding is a constant reminder that I need to keep calm and hope this will get figured out. I never would've thought about blood type incompatibility either... An hour and a half of work and then I'll be resting up until my appointment.

  • I sorry for the situation.  I am RH negative and my husband is + so our DH had a + blood type  I just got a shot around 28 weeks , no biggie at all.  I'm guessing I will need to do it again this time because RH.  It noramlly does not become an issue until your third trimester.  But it shouldn't be a huge concern.  Hang in there and hopefully your appointment today will ease your mind!
  • @SoraLk Thinking about you! Hope the appointment goes well today!

  • To a pp...
Of you are rh- and you come in contact with rh+ blood, you can make antibodies against it...which is clearly bad If you body attacks baby's blood. As someonepointed out, this is really a factor if your husband ispositivebecause then yourbub could be positive.

  • So my doctor told me I am O+ and so no RH incompatability. She told me that my uterus size is "roomy" for 10 weeks but couldn't find the heart beat as my uterus is tilted.

She emphasised for me to not worry and ordered an ultrasound first thing in the morning - the tech on site was fully scheduled for the day and couldnt squeeze me in unfortunately.

She said I may just be in the percentage of women who bleed during their pregnancy. So I am anxiously and excitedly waiting for tomorrow morning to come.

  • I'm A- and my SO is A+ so I have now had 8 rhogam shots. I had a placenta previa that started bleeding around 9ish weeks with my daughter that lasted until around 22ish weeks. Sometimes the blood was brown and sometimes there was a flood of bright red blood. It resolved itself thankfully but definitely a scary time!!!
  • @SoraLk that's good news about the RH, but I am sorry that you are stuck in limbo! FX you are able to relax today and that you have a fantastic ultrasound tomorrow! Keep us updated!

  • @Hopefull2016 Goodness! That's a lot of shots. Placenta Previa sounds pretty scary, but I know it's not out of the list of options for the reason for my bleeding. Would that be something they can find via Ultrasound?

@meq124 Thank you! I'm relaxing pretty well - wish I could take a nice warm bath to relax further, but I'm still on Pelvic Rest until they say otherwise. Will definitely keep everyone updated!
