Disposable Diapers

After reading the great info on cloth diapers on here, it got me thinking about disposable diapers and what I should use for my baby.

So for all of you peeps who already have kids, what disposable diapers did you guys love? Which did you hate? What are the good value diapers? And what are the most eco friendly disposable diapers, for those us moms who cant/wont do cloth but do not want to leave a big foot print?

Thanks!

Re: Disposable Diapers

  • For us there wasn't really that much of an option.  It's what didn't irritate his skin or leak excessively.   We still use pampers swaddlers on him.

Honest diapers are the absolute worst.  They didn't last my kid an hour without pee getting everywhere.

  • We used pampers swaddlers almost exclusively. We tried Huggies and weren't a fan. I've heard Target brand is pretty good for economical choice. I think for Eco friendly there's a brand called Bambo Nature.
  • We did pampers swaddlers when little. We switched to Huggies later on. I found store brand didn't hold a lot... I liked the big brands better.
  • We did Pampers Sensitive for the first 3 months and then switched to Honest Company which worked great for our DD. We never had any leaking issues and they don't get squishy and gross like the Pampers/Huggies.

  • We did Pampers, Huggies fit her horribly.
  • It comes down to personal preference and experiwnce. I used Pampers. Everything else leaked. I had kids of all shapes and sizes and Pampers is the only thing that worked with everyone.

That being said other people swear by Huggies. I don't know of anyone who had good experiences with store brands. (Every store brand I tried gave my daughter a rash) We don't have any other large brands available in most stores here. I tried the honest company one day while visiting someone who had a bunch, I was not impressed.
  • We did a mix of cloth and disposables.

For disposables, we used the Target brand during the day and Pampers overnight. But we also didn't have a massive pee-er on our hands. From what I've seen with other kids, some babies can generate insane amounts of pee (or mind-boggling amounts of poop) so that pretty much every diaper change is a loaded diaper change.

I think if you have sensitive skin, it might be worth it just to buy a sample pack (or ask mom friends for a few?) of the cheaper brands to check if your kid gets irritated skin from them.

  • We've always done pampers for DS. They were the best one for his fit.

  • We don't have kids yet so this isn't my experience but I asked SIL about this over the weekend. She said they used pampers and used the Amazon subscription which saved them money and they ended up only spending $30 or so a month on diapers. To me that sounded low as I was expecting to spend a small fortune but I really had nothing to back up my expectation besides just hearing how people always talk about how expensive diapers are.

  • When he was a newborn we used huggies. I think they were more comfortable for him than pampers. Now we use target brand on him.

I would buy the giant box of Pampers from SAMs Club
  • Most preferences depend on the shape and fit of your individual kid. I do think once you find a brand that works for your child, buying in bulk is your best bet. We hadn't made a Costco or SAMs trip one month and realized buying the small diaper packs at the corner store added up a lot higher than the bulk pack.

  • Has anyone tried the SAMs brand diapers?

I agree but to add to this I wouldn't buy bulk in newborn size. It really wasn't long at all until we were buying size 1.

To add to that...Don't open them until you need them. Most stores will let you exchange if they're unopened.

  • @DrillSergeantCat @GlitterDragon yes definitely agree with them! Never buy NB in bulk! I only bought size 1+ in bulk.
  • We are using Pampers Swaddlers. I signed up for Amazon mom and it gives you 20% off on diapers if you use the subscribe and save feature. It works out perfectly that one jumbo box lasts a whole month and starts out at about 30 dollars a month. The price goes up as baby gets bigger, but it is still totally worth it to not have to go to the store and get diapers they are just delivered to the door once a month.

Also size wise my little one was able to wear newborn diapers for a couple of months. He has always been tall and skinny. But as others have said stores are really good at exchanging them out if they are unopened.

  • We used Pampers Swaddlers on W when he was tiny, then generally stuck with Pampers (Baby Dry or Cruisers) as he got older.  We used their Overnights ones too, but it doesn't look like they make those anymore.  We got a good deal on them through Amazon Mom.  I remember Huggies leaked terribly on him as an infant, so I don't think we ever tried them again as he grew.  Target's diapers also weren't bad, if I recall correctly.

I second the advice to hold off on opening boxes until you know they'll fit til they're finished!

  • I agree with all the comments that pampers (any style for us) did the job and huggies just didn't. But huggies must work for some baby's bodies because I think they're the top brand. Leaked every time for us.
  • I love pampers swaddled. We tried Huggies with our first and they leaked all the time! We went to pampers and never looked back. After we were past the breastfeeding mustered poop we moved on to the Sam's Club brand. They worked well and the price is great!
  • Pampers swaddlers when kiddo was tiny. Huggies are for chunkier kids, when DS packed on the lbs after 2 mos with thunder thighs, those worked just fine. Once he started sleeping through the night, we switched to pampers baby dry for night time. When he started daycare at 7mos old and was making more solid poops, we started sending in target brand diapers for daycare, but continue to use pampers baby dry at night.
  • We use the Costco brand and they are great. DD alsto sleeps in the target brand nighttime ones. We have used everything except Luvs.. I like all of them so now I buy based on price.

As for footprint honest I'd probably a good option. I don't know a lot on that front myself. But the honest diapers are adorable!!!

  • I think the most important thing to realize that when using disposables even if you want to be more conscious about it, is they all end up just sitting in a landfill. I'm not saying that to be snarky or whatever it's just the truth. You can spend a lot more on "natural" disposables, or just use regular pampers or huggies and save some money. They will all end up in the same place.

When my daughter wasn't in cloth (certain babysitters and daycare) we used Huggies. They have an elastic back which helps if your LO is an explosive pooper. Pampers gave my daughter a horrible burn like rash, so we never used them.

  • Not to stir sh!t, cloth isn't all that environmentally friendly when you factor in the cotton industry's use of chemicals and water, the laundering and transportation. Each option has their own evils, take your pick.
  • @perrasucia haha my entire life if my grandma saw a baby she'd go on about cute baby butts. And I always thought "grandma why do you always mention their butt ya weirdo".. But now with my son I get it. Baby butts are ridiculously cute.
  • Both pampers and huggies worked for us this time with our daughter. With my son huggies didn't fit him as well and he leaked more. For cheaper I liked target brand diapers and I'm also ok with Luvs for once they're bigger. Like my daughter now is nearly two and I  normally just buy Luvs for her unless I can find a good deal elsewhere. But I'm cheap.
    Walmarr diapers suck.
definitely look into subscribe and save on Amazon! You can get some good deals and they are delivered to your door which is nice.

  • We did pampers swaddlers til DD was crawling then switched to pampers cruisers. I actually prefer the huggies overnight diapers once the baby starts sleeping through the night longer stretches, so we have those, too.

Luvs worked well and I would have considered using for an older baby, but I liked the wetness indicator on the swaddlers when DD was a newborn so I could keep better track of wet/dirty diapers.

  • Pampers all the way. And pampers sensitive for wipes too.
  • Huggies, then Target brand.
  • I'm shocked at all the pampers users. There's nothing wrong with them I just didn't realize it was such a clear majority. We've used Huggies since the get-go. When we were going thru some skin problems we switched to seventh generation (at target) because they were good scent/dye free. I felt like they fit very similar to Huggies. Then we went back to Huggies when his skin started to clear up.

I don't have as strong opinions about diapers as I do wipes. I HATE cheap wipes. I use Huggies sensitive. I have a pack of target brand right now and I'm hating life.

We started with Pampers and then when DS got older, switched to Target brand.  I love their wipes as well.

I've never been a huge fan of Huggies, they always leaked for some reason.

  • Pamper swaddlers were the best until he outgrew them, but I think they have more sizes now available so I have been stocking up on those. After he outgrew swaddlers we switched to huggies because they didn't have any leaks like the pamper cruisers did with our son. I found not all diapers worked the same with all babies, so you may want to try a bag of each and see which works best for your baby.

  • We use Pampers swaddlers for day and the Pampers baby dry extra protection for overnight (which was the last push we needed to get him to sleep through the night).  I felt Pampers and Huggies were the best, and I liked the Walgreens brand (is it well?) of the store brands best.  We tried a variety of brands, and I think most of it is about fit.  And when you start noticing leaking in diapers that didn't use to leak, go up to the next size (even if your baby doesn't meet the weight requirements).  We also use the Pampers sensitive wipes without any problems.  I hated the Water Wipes brand (big waste of money).

So Pampers might work great for us, but you might find a different brand that works better for you.  If I recall correctly, we got a minimum of Pampers and Huggies samples.  I would recommend checking different brand websites for samples.  We started with cheaper brands and worked our way up to the more expensive when those failed.  I would suggest doing the same if funds are limited.  Economy size boxes are also a good way to save.  Huggies and Pampers both have rewards programs that are worth signing up for.

Keep in mind that you will also likely receive at least a box or bag of newborn diapers at your baby shower.  More than one person may get it for you, but I don't think I've attended a baby shower where someone didn't buy some diapers...  If you have a baby in a hospital, they will also send you home with at least a partial bag.
  • When we weren't in cloth I preferred Pampers!

We do Pampers Swaddles during the day and Pampers Baby Dry at night. We got some free samples of other brands (Huggies, Honest, Presidents Choice (Canada)), but went back to Pampers right away.
  • My kids aren't sensitive at all so unless there's some amazing sale I buy Target up & up or the Sam's brand. I only use Huggies when it comes to wipes though.
