Baby Monitors

edited August 2016 in November 2016 Moms
Hey everyone! I was just wondering everyone's thoughts on a good baby monitor brand? I've been told that some with WiFi are easier for people to hack and that the lithium ion batteries are prone to getting hot and randomly start on fire......so wondering what's the best options out there. Thanks for any suggestions or comets

  • We are considering getting 2 - regular video monitor and an Owlet heat rate and oxygen monitor (mini chip that goes I baby sock). Ideally one would do the job, but I haven't found a device yet that gives video and monitors breathing. The latter part is impt to me cuz I've been reading a lot about SIDS.
  • @atcwag that is the one we registered for, I'm glad to see it works well
  • I have a Motorola video monitor. It works great and I like the big screen, love that I can pan/tilt it remotely, and I like that it gives me the room temp. The battery life is only ok. I appreciate that it starts beeping if disconnected from the camera or if the battery is very low rather than silently shutting off. Those are all the features I can think of that I care about.
  • We're registered for this one: Infant Optics

  • I bought this one for DD two years ago because of a great sale going on at Babies R Us. It doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles but it does the trick for keeping an eye on the LO. I also like that it came with 2 cameras because we can use one for DD and one for this LO without needing to purchase another one.

  • We just had a regular baby monitor for our girls that we honestly rarely used... the new ones now are cool with the monitors and stuff.. but my biggest pet peeve are the monitors that you can link to with your smartphone. I can't tell you how co-workers I know that sit there staring at their phone watching the baby sleep while they're here. They get all distraught if the baby seems to wake up and their husband or wife or whatever doesn't come to get them immediately and then continue to just stare. I hate it. You're at work, put it away. Call and check on your baby like a normal person.

I didn't even think about that. Note to self: baby naps somewhere besides crib while I'm on maternity leave haha
  • We got a cheap Levana one off of Amazon (about $90) and it has video, which I love! It definitely not the nicest, and I wish it had more features (video but muted sound, for example) but we were on a tight budget and I really wanted video and its served us well for 3.5+ years!

The Wi-fi ones make me nervous because of all the stories I've heard about them being hacked. I'm sure there are ways to prevent that from happening, but it's something to look into.

I have 2 Motorola video monitors and I really like them. One is older and doesn't have the room temp and I really wish it did. That might be my favorite feature. I agree battery life isn't great but it comes with a plug with a super long cord so you should be able to just always have a spot to plug it in.
  • We've been using this one for almost two years with no issues: https://summerinfant.com/clearsightdigitalcolorvideomonitor . We'll buy another camera for this baby and use the same monitor.
