Day bed for nursery? Helpful or no?

I'm not buying anything else right now, but my MIL is coming to town soon and will spend a night with us so I'm considering making a purchase early (otherwise she'll be on an air mattress, which she's done before while staying with us).

Did anyone put a day bed in their nursery? I'm thinking about buying basically a twin bed/day bed/futon something (single person sized) for our nursery, thinking I might be sleeping in it some of the time esp. early on. Also, MIL could sleep on it for her upcoming visit and subsequent visits.

Reasons I'm not 100% sure about this- when MIL visits for work in town she's on her own, but that's once every few months and once the bebe is here she and FIL will both be coming, so it's not like we'd be able to sleep both of them anyways. We're probably moving for work a year from now, and it will probably be to a cheaper area of the country and we'll have a larger house with a guest room, which I'd want a full or queen sized bed for to accommodate both my parents or both his parents.

Not to mention, no idea what I want the nursery furniture/decor to be at this point.

I keep going back and forth about grabbing something cheap and anticipating using it in the nursery, or thinking it's ridiculous and I wouldn't use it that much. Thoughts?

tl;dr: Should I buy a single adult sized bed for my nursery?

That's a difficult decision! I think that it would be nice to have the bed in there, but I have never spent a night in the baby's room, especially since they slept in our room for the first 3-4 months, we were always in the master. You will definitely use the twin when they are 3ish and move to a big kid bed, so I don't think it would be a wasted purchase even if you have to wait that long to use it.

It it sounds kind of like a personal preference! Sorry if I wasn't much help!

  • I love having a daybed in the nursery! Lu slept in our room the first 6 months but after that she was in her crib. It helped a lot on nights bed sharing was better for us but my H's apnea would keep her up.

  • If you have the room in there, I'd say go for it!  Just an extra spot to grab a nap when the time comes.  Get something kind of neutral so when you figure out how you want to decorate, it will just blend right in.

  • I am thinking of doing this instead of a rocker because of twins (apparently it's easier to have a couch-type situation so you can put one down next to you for a minute if you need to).  It would be good to have for the occasional out of town guest, too.  Seems like it would also be nice to have something both parents could sit on in the room instead of just one.
  • @C25 & @AverageAsh would you change diapers and handle feedings in your room for the months they slept in there with you, or walk to the nursery for that?

  • I'd say go for it if you have room! Especially if you might be able to use it later for LO. We don't have one in our nursery, but I spent plenty of nights sleeping on the floor in DS room. He also slept in our room for the first couple months, but his room was literally across the hall so would change diapers and feed him in there.

We did everything in my bed while she was in there to maximize sleep.

  • I agree, if you have the room for it, get it. I didn't have one with my daughter but I'm seriously thinking about it this time around. Our daughter slept in our room for 6 months, but would nap in the nursery. There were plenty of times I wish I had a bed in there, though I can't remember specifically why, lol. It's just nice to have options.
  • Could you get a day bed with a trundle underneath? That way its a single bed most of the time, but you can pull a second twin bed out from underneath to accommodate two people.   I had one of those growing up, and it came in hand for a number of occasions - elementary school sleepovers, guests in town, etc.

  • If you have the space and cash, I would do it. My husband is a crazy sleeper so I would have liked having a spot to lay with my babies at times, especially during the first few weeks/months that they did not sleep well. At times I felt it would be easier to have a bed just for breast feeding at first. As silly as it may sound, I had one that only latched in the beginning when I was laying on my side.

I had a little basket of diapers and supplies right next to my bed. Everything was done in my room. You're doing it all too often to go back and forth in those early months!
  • I've spent a few nights crashing on the floor, especially when LO was sick and up most the night. I would have loved a small day bed or even a futon if I had the space. DD's room would have been way too cramped with it, we have a very small place. If you have the space then I'd say it wouldn't be a wasted purchase.
  • Go for it. You can use it for the baby when they transition from the crib/toddler bet. It will save you an expense later.
  • If we are going to be honest, it also holds a lot of laundry I haven't gotten to yet.

  • I'm so with this. We have a futon in DS room and it folds out to a queen bed. Super helpful when we have guests and obviously for me when he wont sleep in his crib!
  • Honestly? If keep baby in your room for awhile and use the nursery as a guest room.

  • We had this for our first child. At the time we lived in a 2 bedroom apt. When we had visitors we let them have the nursery and put our daughter in our walk in closet in the pack and play. We live in a house now and will use this bed soon when our daughter transitions to a bed.
