Coughing/Choking

I'm have a concern about our LO.  Yesterday she started coughing a little like she was choking and I just thought she had a little reflux.  She's not fussy, crying or having any other reflux symptoms and keeps most of her bottles down most of the time.  We are sure to always burp her really well and keep her upright for a bit after feedings as a precaution.  Then today the coughing/choking has increased dramatically.  She has been doing it all day today.  During feeding, after feedings, in the middle of the day, during naps and playtime.  Pretty much all the time, approximately every hour or two.  She doesn't spit anything up and her mouth doesn't have milk in it either.

Anyone have any experience with this?  I don't know what it could be.  DH says she is just figuring out how her mouth works with swallowing/breathing/eating but really?  It just doesn't sound right to me.  She has been congested but we've been doing saline rinses each day.  I just set up a cool mist humidifier in her room this evening and I'm hoping that will help with her congestion.  I'm worried she has pneumonia or something.  The cough just doesn't sound like a newborn cough to me.  Granted she is 8 weeks today but still.

We do have a ped appointment tomorrow and I'm going to bring it up, just thought I would ask here too if anyone else has/is experiencing anything similar.

Re: Coughing/Choking

  • Mine is 8 weeks today too and has just started having a couple coughing episodes where it sounds like he's almost gagging.  It's only happened a few times, but I kind of figured it's just him learning how to swallow his own saliva.  He just started drooling a lot more, which I think is a normal developmental stage, and I think sometimes it just pools back there and he has to cough it out.  We have his two month visit Monday so I was going to ask then. But he doesn't seem sick otherwise so I'm not worried.
  • Same thing happening here. We have our two month on Tuesday. Acadia has always had issues with spitting up after bf but lately she's choking on her saliva and sometimes seemingly nothing. She's starting doing it in her sleep too which is so scary. She also sounds like she's congested a lot of the time but no fever or any other signs of illness. @veggiebabylove what did the pediatrician say when you took your son?

  • My daughter turned 9 weeks yesterday and has started randomly coughing. She does have silent reflux but hasn't coughed till the last few days. She's not sick. We have our 2 month check up on Tuesday so I plan to ask then.

He said it was normal and as long as he doesn't have any other signs of reflux we shouldn't worry about it.

ETA He also said the drooling is not necessarily teething.  Drooling and chewing on hands is a developmental phase and DS has started doing both now.
  • So scary but I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this concern.  Lillyana is doing so much better now.  She was SUPER congested, sneezing and coughing/choking for about 3-4 days.  The ped said she was fine just really congested, possibly a little cold.  We did saline rinses 2-3 times a day and did more tummy time with her so she wouldn't have so much drainage down the back of her throat.  She's totally fine now.
