Preggo clothes-limited options *rant*

So my jeans are all a bit snug/uncomfortable already so, while I was at Kohls school shopping for my daughter I decided to look for preggo pants.

There were TWO racks of maternity clothes! That was it! I even asked a clerk and she said they had shrunk their maternity section. And the jeans they had were all holey so I couldn't wear them to work! We live in a small town and so I have a choice of Kohls, specialty shops I can't afford or Walmart, which I hate patronizing. Now I know why people buy everything online!! AURGH!!!!

Amazon here I come!

  • Kohls in store was awful for maternity but I really liked some of their pants I found online. Also check out any resale shops? They just built a brand new Goodwill in our area and there is a maternity section too!

Also what about craigslist or Facebook resale groups in your area?

  • I was also very disappointed in the selection at Kohl's. I'm sorry you have no other options. Good luck with online shopping!

  • I'll check out the Goodwill store for sure. Craigslist & Facebook groups are so hit & miss for our area. I'll just keep my eye out. Thank you!

  • I totally feel you! I went to Target today to specifically to get some maternity clothes and they literally had 3 racks. For some stupid reason I gave away my maternity jeans to Goodwill so I wanted another couple pairs and all they had at Target were effing jeggings. The last thing I want to wear when I'm pregnant are skintight jeans. They had zero work pants and then itty bitty shorts. Disappointed!
  • I feel your pain, ladies! I have the added bonus of being super tall and can't find regular pants that are long enough in stores. So I do my shopping online. My recommendation is to check out the online selection of maternity clothes of stores in your area. Most of the time, you can return online purchases in-store, so you don't have to deal with the hassle of return shipping and waiting for your refund.

Jeggings?  WTF?!  Who wants to wear those when the feel like a bloated blob?!

  •  I have the baby hips, the baby butt and the baby boobs. Skintight clothes don't work with any of that!
YEP me too! Right there with you.
You could try subscribing to Pea in a Pod's emails for work clothes, and check their website- they seem to run online sales pretty constantly, I think in the past two weeks they've had 30% off all full-priced items then 50% off all tops. Plus they have things like 40% off tops already on sale for $30 right now, basically I've been stalking this page:

It seems like the "trend" is skintight clothes that showoff the bump. Of course they're all designed for women who ONLY have the baby bump. I have the baby hips, the baby butt and the baby boobs. Skintight clothes don't work with any of that!
I was just having this conversation with a friend of mine during lunch! I was telling her about my useless trip to Target and how they only had jeggings and I'm like, "who the hell wants to wear skintight jeans when they're pregnant?!" She's like, "well I did." I said, "umm, yeah, you're a 00 so of course you could wear that shit." She was all belly and didn't gain weight anywhere else when she was preggers. And then of course 4 months after giving birth she was wearing a bikini.  :|
  • I ordered 3 pairs of maternity work pants on JCPenney's website, and had them sent to the store so I could try them on & return if they didn't fit. I bought all 3 in the same size - all 3 fit extremely different and only one actually looked decent. This is the biggest store in the area, and they don't have a maternity section. Kohl's only has online, and Target has leggings & jeans (and those awesome jeggings everyone's going on about). Why is it so hard for stores to carry these in store??

  • I found out that H&M has a maternity section, so I went in to look around... that was a joke, as I should have expected. All of the pants were labeled "super skinny!" (noooo thanks) and the shirts were really thin/flimsy. I think I'm going to have to play the online ordering game too.

  • I lucked out with an awesome second-hand haul when I was pregnant with DS that included a bunch of cute tops and shorts. I just had to buy pants because standard length are too short on me and I ended up buying a couple plain maternity/BFing tank tops too but I'll be able to use all of those again with this pregnancy. I'll just have to get a couple of sweaters (DS was born in July). I am a little disappointed I won't get to use the maternity shorts again though, they were so damn cute and, more importantly, SO comfy!
  • I was so disappointed with Kohls last pregnancy as well. One rack of next to nothing. JCP didn't even have a section, nor did the H&M or Old Navy in my area -- and I work in NYC!

Most of my stuff came from sales at Motherhood Maternity, and a few pieces from Target. Overall I was disappointed with the selection everywhere near me. I hate online shopping and try to avoid it because things never fit me right.
  • I went to Marshall's and bought two pairs of black maternity stretchy leggings. It's one size fits all and awesome.

I swear my butt gets pregnant before my belly. Happened last time too. I have wide hips (which is good) but I have a hard time fitting into skinny clothes under the best of circumstances! I know we're all supposed to support each and everything but when I see these women who you wouldn't know they were pregnant until they turn sideways, the little green monster can't help but shoot daggers.

Umm your Marshall's has a maternity section? I am super jealous.

@SKJ I just wore my maternity jean shorts this week (the below the belly ones). Elastic waist for the win!

  • I'm finding a lot of skinny jeans which might as well be jeggings. No no no. Zulily has some deals and super cute. I think the bulk of my fall/winter wardrobe will be from consignment stores.

Mine doesn't either! A brand new Marshall's was built by my house and I've been in all of 2 times. The overall selection is awful! They literally have one small rack for kids clothes. Boo!
  • @sgrant432 What's the pricing like for Stitch Fix? I know that everyone has a different definition for what they consider to be reasonable, so what price point would you compare it to? I think I might give it a try.
  • Hi ladies! Gap has tons of work appropriate maternity clothing that isn't skin-tight. For more fun (read casual/trendy) options, I love ASOS online. They ship pretty quickly, and everything I've ordered from them in the past has fit well and been of a good quality.

  • I have the worst time finding maternity pants. I need tall sizes which if you can find them are just never available in my size/color/whatever. And seriously, what is with all the skinny jeans?!? They are NOT flattering on these thighs!

  • I love Gap maternity.  I know it can be pricey but they have 40% off sales and it's worth it to me to splurge on a few things I love and will wear weekly. I love that their jeans are real sizes (2,4,6) instead of small, med etc and they come in longs!!

I also have a few things from old navy and some motherhood maternity.

I don't love online shopping either but I would like to try stitch fix maternity!
  • @CanadianInTheSouth That's amazing! I definitely tried mine on but as impressive as this bloat is it won't hold up full panels just yet haha
  • I bought some basics online from Motherhood Maternity yesterday because they were having an additional 50% off all sale and clearance. I got a pair of skinny jeans, 2 tops, and 3 tanks for $35!!

  • @SKJ haha yeah I have a couple pairs of the full panel ones but those are just enormous at this point. I am sporting a pretty impressive blump though

  • @kiyamurph the cool thing about stitch fix is you can put in your price points for the pieces and if you don't want certain items sent, you can let them know when you fill out your profile.  Price points are: less than $50, $50-100, $100-$150, etc.  Most of the tops that I get are around $30-$40 and I have the $50-100 price option selected.

  • @JessyKV I used stitch fix maternity a few times last year with my pregnancy and enjoyed most of my pieces.  I'm going to use it again with this one.  I will be glad to share my referral code with anyone who wants to try it! :)

  • @kiyamurph I don't think it will work since you've already ordered a fix. But hope you enjoy it!

I'll post it for anyone else who wants to try.

  • Gap on line and Ann Taylor Loft on line have some great options.  Wait for sales and you can get great deals!  I got jeans for $17, work pants for $15 and tops for $10 last pregnancy at both of the stores above.  Many of the times you can get free shipping and gap returns are free.
  • @sgrant432 Had to re-bump this post just to thank you for the Stitch Fix recommendation! I got my first Fix a couple days ago and am keeping 2 items; a great pair of jeans and an adorable dress. Will definitely get it again!
