STM - Registry?

I went to mommycon a couple weeks ago here in DC and BRU was there and they gave away a goodie bag if you set up a registry. Why not I thought? I know that we will have to buy some stuff and you get a registry completion discount - so really for now I'm looking at it as a shopping list.

But Im curious what yall think? Will yall start and share registry information?

DS will be 18 mo and so while we will be reusing a lot we are team green this time I don't want to end up with 100 green or yellow onsies bc no one knew what to get!

Re: STM - Registry?

  • Last time I made a registry for the discount and just bought everything myself. This time I am having a baby shower so the registry will be put to more use.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I signed up for a BRU registry just for the gift bag when I was pregnant with my DS with zero intention of actually using the registry and I'll probably do the same this time.

I totally feel you on the yellow/green stuff too. Not necessarily from other people because all our friends and family that bought gifts waited until after he was born but for myself! We were Team Green the first time and will be again this time so we're pretty set but I know if I see anything gender neutral that isn't yellow/green (aka anything in grey) I'll "have" to buy it just like last time.
  • I am not really planning to do anything. I figure some friends may get us things, probably clothes, but really, with a 12 month old we have pretty much everything we need. We are team green and #1 was a girl, but I made it a point to get things that weren't all pink, and if its a boy, he can deal with some pink clothes ;) . I am hoping family, mainly parents, will want to foot the bill for the few big things we may need (crib, rocker, etc.) since they did last time but I am going into it with zero expectations. But I am doing what you are doing and getting a shopping list together, and will probably do it via a registry since we can get the discount.

Also, not going to lie. I tend to really side-eye people who do huge registries for 2nd or more kids (unless there is a huge age gap). I know someone who re-registered for essentially everything (bouncer, exersaucer, play gym, pack n play, clothes, etc) and they were having another boy and their first was under 2. Those people ruin it for everyone!

  • What stuff is in the BRU gift bag?  Do you get a gift bag if you set up a registry online?  I plan to register and just keep it private.  I never had a shower with my first two.  There's not much I need this time around but I would use a registry like a shopping list or a wish-list for family.
  • I have no problem with a registry as a shopping list with a completion coupon but I find it weird to publicize it widely for a second baby. In our circle nobody does showers for second+ kids and we still have pretty much all our stuff so we probably won't bother making a registry ourselves.

  • This is my third and my kids are 3 and 1 so I really don't need a ton (I have one girl and one boy).  I declined a shower for my second since we were team green and I really didn't need anything plus I just felt funny about it.  People brought gifts when he was born and it was so nice.  Anyway I guess that's beside the point of this post!

If I were registering for a discount this is what I would do.

This time around I want a rock in play or other bassinet. We borrowed different things before and I didn't love it.  We will use our pack n play in the basement so I want something else in our room.

Part of me would like to trade my traditional swing in for a mamaroo but I don't know if my husband will go for the price.

Our infant car seat expires Dec 17 so I will need to switch the baby to a convertible fairly quickly.  Or maybe I'll buy a new infant to begin with.

I didn't buy new bottles or many pump parts last time around so we are in dire need of replacing bottles, nipples and pump parts. I need to check my insurance to see what pumps they support.
I have a medela PISA and Freemie but my medela has been through over 2 years of pumping.

We also need more blankets, burp cloths, wash cloths, towels, and bibs because ours have disappeared or are worn out after 2 kids.

I I have a ktan and ergo but I don't have an infant insert so I would like one of those.  I also saw the Lalabu kangaroo type shirt and fell in love with the idea so I kind of want one of those.

Ok after thinking about it I think I need more than I thought!! Lol
  • Only thing we would need would be boy clothes since my DS is 6 and we had two girls after that, anything that was gender neutral is worn and gave away almost all our other boy outfits.  If it's a girl she is set forever lol.  So no registry for us as if I recall it was geared toward more big items then clothing.

Sorry I'm not a lot of help bc I was at mommycon I got a ton of swag bags. I know they had a small Kiinde starter set, they also gave a 4oz mam anti colic bottle, some coupons, and a bib for sure. Again I was just throwing all of the things I got into one bag so I'm not sure what else was specifically included.
  • @MyNamesTaken this is exactly what I was thinking. I want going to exactly distribute the list but am starting to think maybe I'll pass it to the grandparents? My dad never got us anything for DS but always comments about needing to get something for us (lo is 11 mo lol) and with the ILs I think without guidance we will simply end up with a ton of stuffed animals. I don't want to come off ungrateful but they are retired on a fixed income and I do not was my kiddos to have an insane amount of toys. I've already started a donation pile that I plan to make an annual tradition. It makes me I'll to think about the money the ILs waste.

Granted just bc I give a list doesn't mean they will follow it lol.

And see in our group no one has second baby showers but there is always a party to celebrate the second babys impending arrival annnnd ppl usually bring gifts lol. I won't be doing this but thought it was funny.
  • I think it's perfectly okay to start a private registry for the coupons and freebies, but I personally think it should be only for that purpose and not shared unless someone specifically asks for the info.
    DD (8), DS (5), DD (3)
    baby #4 due March '17!
  • @meq124 okay yeah that's nuts. We dont need any big items. Since most of our friends just share. So far all I have on mine is a few more bottles, an extra camera for our system, a couple neutral pacifiers, and beanies. Not much lol. I can't imagine needing that much bc with thr amount of time I spend at home right now this lo will live in pj's their first 6 mo like mine did and who cares what color they are!
  • I've already started one on amazon and one at walmart, mostly as a list for myself so I remember what I want and can get things slowly. I don't think we'll have a shower this time but as DD is 5 and we gave everything away we are completely starting over if family or friends ask I can share the list .

  • I'll start one for the discount only. DS is 4.5, so we will need to replace a few things (monitor, expired infant carrier, etc.). I'll use it mainly to keep track of what I need to buy. Unless family asks, I don't foresee sharing it.

  • I plan on doing one for the discounts!

  • I've started one, more of a place to keep track of my thoughts opposed to giving it out.  I've been using BabyList, but I'll probably set up a BRU/BBB/Amazon one for the completion discount.

Eventually, I will get the list of a place that is shareable.  I don't know that I'll have a shower, but my birthday is in November and between that and Christmas our families are always asking for suggestions for gifts.  That way I have something handy.

  • I'll be a FTM but I'll say this - for my friends who were having their seconds and thirds I still asked if they had registries because I & other coworkers and friends wanted to give gifts regardless of whether it was their first child, and not being a mom yet I've been clueless outside of registries as to what to buy...

  • I would do one for the discounts but probably not to give to anyone for real. To be fair, my DD is only 2 so we still have EVERYTHING major. Clothes (if this one is a boy) and maybe a few smaller items (fresh nipples for bottles, diapers, ect) are all I'm hoping to need this go around.

We knew we wanted a few kids so we registered for all gender neutral larger items with DD (crib, swing, carseats, strollers, pack & play, ect)
  • @vino831 I do know about the BRU trade in. Is it 25% off? It's been a while... Lol

Yes!! This is brilliant! I'll make a Christmas list

@chrlyr yes it's 25% per item. We had an old car seat that was gifted to us and an umbrella stroller from my 4 yo niece that had a broken wheel. We got a 25% off coupon for each. Really made a dent in the furniture purchases.

Added - it's in the fall I believe. Sept time frame? I know there is one in Feb and one in Sept. Tbh idk which is which.

@hippiemama mama oh why why why didn't I manage to talk to someone like you before buying everything for my DS?! Meaning someone with sense! Everything we have is boy specific. Luckily idc if our girl (if it is a girl) sits in a blue car seat, green pack and play or a blue swing!
  • Yes we'll have one. I have 2 kids (from a previous relationship) but they are 7 and 10. So we have NOTHING for babies anymore. This will be my DH first (and our last!) baby. We don't expect a shower, but I would bet someone will throw one for us, since his family is big on things like that. If not, I will use it as a list and for the coupons! :)

Exactly my thoughts @vino831, I really hope they will help me out with the double bob! My mom and aunt got me my single bob the first time around so I'm hoping there is a chance... those things are expensive!

  • I honestly didn't think about having a registry before I read this thread, but now after thinking about it I'll probably start a private one just to have a discount at the end. Our son is 2 so we still have everything and we made sure that all of the crib bedding and major furniture items were gender neutral. But we will need more swaddling blankets, bottles since some got lost at daycare, and other small items here and there. Thanks for starting this thread!
  • I don't know if they do the discount or goodie bags in Canada, I didn't get any of that with my first registry. If that's the case I wouldn't mind making a registry for my own sake but as a STM definitely not going to share it, even as a FTM I never shared my registry. I had a very small baby shower shower though with just super close family so no registry really necessary. Now I'm curious about a completion discount thing...

Fellow Canadian here! We did Sears and BRU with #1. I know we got a discount at Sears but I don't think we did at BRU. They did give us a swag bag but it was nothing special. A bottle, some homeopathic remedy we threw away, and maybe some coupons for a pump? It wasn't anything I'd go out of my way for.

  • @BurrberryMum I'm sure it depends upon location but I'm in Canada as well and the BRU bag I got with DS (+2 years ago) had a pack of diapers (an 8-pack or something but still FREE), some other great samples in it (I only remember the disposable breast pads, bum cream and some 'natural' medicine stuff but there was about 6-7) and coupons.

We won't be having a shower as this is our second child but the idea of registering for the completion discount isn't bad! We have pretty much everything we need but will need a new crib mattress and a few other little things.

  • we're doing one considering we still need some big ticket items such as a car seat and double stroller. I don't turn down a discount! LOL
  • YUP! Discount seeker over here!! Registered for the things I know we'll need new and things we could've used with DS but never had!

I will likely share with family around the Holidays if they ask if there's anything we need. I would much prefer baby items then a new shirt for mom
  • my SIL's were mentioning throwing me a "sprinkle" but I told them I'm not asking anything, if anyone wants to do something that's fine, but I would never ask since it's my (2nd & 3rd on the way) and everything from DD was gender neutral.

The only reason I may make a list is because being it's twins, I'll need another crib (which someone may give us as a hand me down), and more gear- bottles, and I'll definitely need a new pump this time around.

Once we find out genders I can think about clothes, I've saved all DD's clothes, but if there's a boy or 2 in there, I'll need boy clothes, and just other necessities like lots of extra onesies and burp cloths, extra sheets, etc. We will also need new car seats since by the time they are born DD's will have expired, and with twins I'll have to buy an additional anyway, so we may try and hit up the TRU/BRU trade in events.

It's overwhelming to think of yet, still so early, so I may make a list for my own knowledge with DH of things we'll need to prep for, but nothing at all that I plan on distributing to anyone.

  • I'll probably sign up for the gifts and coupons but not make it public at all. I don't even want anyone thinking I did it for gifts.
There are a few things we will need to replace and it would be nice to have it all in one place so my pregnancy brain doesn't have to try to remember it all.

Does it only apply if you complete a registry in store? I made mine online, maybe that's why.
  • I already made a registry lol. Completion discount! If anyone asks I will share, but I won't have a shower or anything.

  • Canadian here... no discounts and no swag bag when I did one for my daughter in store in 2013. This is my 3rd... don't need much.
  • I have already started a registry. I was seriously thinking about it being my FFFC this week. My only child is 5 now and we've moved twice. There's not much that we have left. Besides, a lot of the baby gear, like the bouncy seat, swing, bassinet, etc. were borrowed and have since returned, and probably are gone now. We have held onto a few of the bigger items, like the crib/mattress and a play yard, but we pretty much need everything, including maternity clothes. The car seat and bases probably aren't even safe anymore. So I told my mom and my sister, please don't judge me, I'll even host the "sprinkle," but I'm registering!
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • I'll be honest here, I started a second registry with a fake due date at BRU back in April just because I was in there buying things for my son all the time, and I figured why not add it all onto a registry to get the gift card and completion coupon at the end? Those baby gates and swim diapers add up! ;)

I don't foresee having another shower since DS is only (almost) one and all of our big things are neutral, so I'll just add what I need onto the current registry, change the due date, and use it as a shopping list for myself. I'll only share information if people specifically ask.
