Postpartum supply list

OK ladies! I can't be the only one starting to stock pile my hoard of items for after baby. Besides a large amount of feminine pads and disposable nursing pads, what else is on everyone's list for our needs after giving birth?

Last birth I made my poor sweet husband go buy me cotton boy shorts lol he was so confused by all the choices.

Re: Postpartum supply list

  • I have a wishlist on Amazon called "Hospital Bag" and added stuff I saw from blogs, lists on pinterest, etc.... but now I don't know why I added half the stuff I did. lol.

But they must be important, because I added them!  So here they are:

1.)  Liquid Glycerin Suppositories - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002ZG8H84/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3P5IV9JRUWQI7&coliid=I2013OJSHKJPWN  I think I remember reading that it helped so much with the fear of going #2 for the first time after delivery.  If I remember correctly, the blogger recommended prepping a few days beforehand and taking stool softeners as soon as you deliver.  Sorry, pregnant brain.

2.) Gas - X strips - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000SF8GBC/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3P5IV9JRUWQI7&coliid=I2K1ZRAKCZ1KZP&psc=1  No idea why I saved this on my list, because don't the nurses ask you often if you've passed gas?  So then why should I be preventing gas?

3.) I think this one is more for the house, and not for the hospital. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007E500KE/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3P5IV9JRUWQI7&coliid=I20SEA3UWF4RGC

    4.) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000067PQ0/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3P5IV9JRUWQI7&coliid=IDKAXPH7GYAIL&psc=1

  • The gas-x strips were a life saver after I had laproscopic surgery and had a lot of built up gas in my body for the days after surgery.  I didn't use them in the hospital, but when I got home.  I figure it'd probably be the same way for after birth, especially if a c-section was a part of it.  The gas build up was just downright painful, and the gas-x just helped give a little bit of comfort.

I've heard that nipples can be really sore when first starting out on the bfing journey, and this might be a breastfeeding question, but I'm still not entire sure of the reason to get non-lanolin stuff versus lanolin... I want to get some for my own supply kit, but not sure what to go with.

This weekend I plan on stocking up on some postpartum underwear (thinking haynes, fruit of the loom, etc), witch hazel, and other bathroom supplies that might make me feel that much better after getting home.  I'm hoping to stock up on toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, condition, body wash, razors, cotton makup pads, etc. so I don't have to think about those things when I get home.  I rather my own health be on autopilot as I freak out about caring for the baby.
  • @Piperella, good idea on the razors, body wash, shampoo etc!  I'll do the same.  So crazy to be stocking up on this now, it makes it so real!!!
  • I'll be making a stash of padsicles,  yes that's a thing, pads with lavender oil witch hazel and aloe I think that u keep in the freezer. Google it

I'm also making batches.of.lactation cookie dough to to cook right before and while nursing.

I have a.list of stuff I've saved: sitz bath, squeeze bottles for after bathroom cleaning, pads, comfy undies,  colace, dermoplast and lots of freezer meals. That's I all I can think of for now
  • I need some new undies... And it's always good to have some dry shampoo and fresh make up / bath products so you don't have to send DH out to get them. I'm also looking into finding some comfortable vneck t shirts and some high waisted leggings.
  • 50 billion prefolds/burp rags. Those things are super handy for everything.

    Water bottles.

    Energy/protein bars.

    Super pads and witch hazel

  • @samkins nailed a lot of important ones. I would add Tucks to the list. They felt great on a recovering nether region and were great to keep in the bathroom postpartum

  • @TurtleMomma, pardon my ignorance, but what are prefolds?
  • @TurtleMomma, pardon my ignorance, but what are prefolds?
Cloth diaper inserts that you can buy at most baby stores for cheap. They're super absorbent and convenient.

  • @samkins tell
    me about this cookie dough
  • @mrszoess You can find recipes on Pinterest. I didn't know of such things when I breastfed my daughter, but I'm eager to try it this time. It looks like the active ingredient is brewer's yeast.
  • It's basically oatmeal chocolate chip cookies with brewers yeast and flax seed, they help with milk production (Google lactation cookies for a million recipes). U can prepare the dough and freeze!!
  • Yesssss on that dermaplast spray. Life saver when you're scared to pee!!! Take as much as that stuff home as you can from the hospital ladies!

Im going to add: herbal Sitz baths! Hubby nicely brought me a little tub that sat in the toilet so I didn't have to get fully undressed.

Motherslove perennial spray is pretty nice too!

  • Most of the critical ones have been covered, but I'll add some of those premoistened Preparation H wipes with witch hazel, and some thinner pads/panty liners (I didn't need the giant ones as long as I thought I would last time).
  • do the thicker pads work better than the ultra absorbent thins? I can't get down w the big pads normally so as a ftm just wondering if I could get away w the overnight super thins

ymmv but the thins did not do it for me until probably 3-4+ weeks PP. I bled til about 6weeks.

+1 to dermoplast spray (make sure it's not the antibacterial kind), postpartum underwear (I get the hanes boyshorts from target), freezing lactation cookie dough (I LOVED this recipe last time), nipple cream (I used organic coconut oil and it was the best thing I found), lots of giant pads (I premade padsicles last time and didn't use them, instead I used the ice ones I swiped form the hospital and the dermoplast spray and the combo worked much better), lots of snacks you can eat one handed.

    Add this to your list!

I didn't even see the comments before I posted this, so I'm sorry for the repeat!

Also, I loved my postpartum belly binder. It really helped shrink my uterus faster, and helped support my back.
    And these:

I had 2 sets. One for hot and one I kept in the freezer. They were amazing.

    Edited to add some things.

Oh and have boxes and boxes of disposable breast pads at the ready especially if you plan to breastfeed. The amount of pads you go through when your milk comes in is insane!

  • Does anyone who uses cloth pads for their menstrual cycle have experience using them for postpartum bleeding? I don't want to buy a bunch of giant ones that I wouldn't ever use again, but I don't want to be stuck in disposables for weeks.

  • You ladies are saving my post-baby lady bits! I had no idea all of these were things so I had a great shopping trip at target today, totally prepared now.
Ha... I started an Amazon cart specifically for all of this stuff!

I bled like a mofo for a few weeks after DS (6-7 weeks total). I HAD to have the giant diaper pads for the first 2-3 weeks or else I bled all over the damn place. From my own experience, I doubt thin pads for the first few weeks would've cut it  :/

  • I would totally suggest having two kinds of pads on hand. The thin ones totally won't handle what's going to come. But I got by with swiping tons of the hospital diaper type pads and then switched to my always brand overnights for the rest of the time, with frequent changes!

  • I almost wanna wear depends.
  • According to the internet, a lot of moms do wear depends... I would be afraid of suffocating my bum. And I'm going to vote for fluffy pads because personally I'm really sensitive to air flow (or lack thereof) and the fluffier pads seem to do better on the airflow than the thinner ones.

  • I bought a sample pack of 4 of the depends silhouette active fit depends to see if they are more comfortable than giant pads, especially at night.
  • Lucie's list actually suggests getting depends for postpartum. I am considering it for that first week home, especially at night.

I didn't find my bleeding to be that bad. But I had a c section so for some reason I am thinking that PP bleeding after a c section can be less? Anyone hear that?
  • @serenaxo84 I've had 2 c sections and bled for 6 weeks for both of them. Super heavy the first three days and then just a regular flow for 2 weeks and after that it only got heavy if I over did it. This could be easily not the case for everyone though.

I just got the last of my supplies and I got:
    -2 new pairs of pj's
    - high waisted granny panties in case I have another c section.
    -nipple cream
    -sports bras for nursing
    -pads
    -panty liners
    -nursing pads
-vitamin D for me and the drops for baby
    -gas drops for baby
    -Tylenol and Advil for me
-squirt bottle for cleaning up down there (great for even if you have a CS cause you feel fresher down there)

  • @Schell2013 do sports bras work just as well for nursing?? I haven't been out shopping for any nursing bras yet but am already intimidated that they'll be $$$... I KNOW I can find sports bras cheap tho.
  • @Kittens22 they work good! I always treat myself to one of two nice pretty nursing bras after my milk regulates and my boobs aren't stupid engorged, huge and sore though. But sports bras with a padded cup work perfectly fine!

  • @Schell2013 I wish I could remember as well as you! I'm probably in for a surprise! I remember being able to wear thin pads when I got home. But I also didn't have a toddler to take care of too!

The squirt bottle! That thing is amazing!!!! I'm not a pad girl and it's so nice to be able to clean yourself every time you go to the bathroom!
