Insurance Switch

Hi Everyone,

Just curious to know if anyone has ever used one insurance for IF treatments and then once using up all the funds w/ that insurance, switching to another and using that new insurance for continued IF treatments.

I'm currently on my husband's insurance and we've pretty much exhausted our IF funds with 3 IUIs and 1 IVF cycle. And since we only got one good embryo out of the IVF cycle, we'll either have to do another one because we want 2 children, or if this upcoming FET doesn't work. I'm hoping that I can make the switch to my own insurance when we do another IVF cycle.

Has anyone done this? Have you run into any issues?

Thank you!!

Re: Insurance Switch

  • I haven't done this, but I think you'll run into an issue switching insurance if it's not the open enrollment period for your employer. Maybe you already took that into consideration, and are timing it for that. Do you know what the IF benefits are for your employer's insurance? And if your doctor takes that insurance?

  • @Bababatty Yep, open enrollment takes place in the fall, so it's perfect timing. From what I hear, my company's insurance is pretty good and my RE takes it.

  • Oh that's great! I hope the switch works out.  That's really nice that you have it as an option, and what perfect timing. Good luck!
  • I have not done this yet but my husband and I started to discuss this as an option. We will probably be able to do 1 ivf cycle through my insurance and if we need more treatment we will drop mine and start using his coverage. His employer is in a mandated coverage state just like mine so we will be checking out his coverage next open enrollment period to see if it's worth it. I'm glad to see we aren't the only ones thinking of doing this.
