Weekend Pregnancy Chatter & Questions - 8/5-8/7

Going forward, this will be a twice weekly thread to just... you know... talk about pregnancy and stuff. Wondering what everybody's opinion on doctors vs midwifes vs doulas? Find a good cure for something that's been ailing you?  Just had one of those "holy smokes I'm GROWING a HUMAN like it's a potted plant or something, but INSIDE MY BODY" moments?  Have a rando ask when the baby is due and you're like, "Wait, I'm not even showing yet, not sure if I should be polite or rude at this point"?   Whatever comments or stories or questions or etcetera you got that don't quite fit into the other organizational threads, this is probably the spot.

  • What are people doing about clothes...?

Like I've gained about 15 lbs over the past couple of years do to exercise injuries, clumsiness and my wonderful DH's cooking and love of wine/craft beer (though I'd been watching the latter for awhile). So...my clothes are a little tight, stomach is pudgier - I'm not going to buy new stuff but it's too early for maternity, I'm afraid one day I'll wake up and nothing fits.

I guess I'll go to consignment and Goodwill (which actually I did that when I lost weight several years ago, wasn't sure if I'd keep it off and I did for 6 years). We have a lot around and good stuff/brands. There is also maternity.

I'm 5'5 and 150 if that makes any difference....any suggestions?
  • @WkoutMomtoBe We have about the same height and weight, but maybe different body types. I plan on buying cheap maternity clothes (like Old Navy). I also will wear a lot of leggings with dresses once it gets cooler, because that seems like a fairly cheap way to dress.

For now, you could buy some dresses that aren't maternity but have room to grow so you won't wake up one day with nothing to wear.

  • @WkoutMomtoBe my Bella Band was my best friend near the end of first trimester with DS. You could look at getting one of those. I was able to wear it to work without anyone noticing. Really helped the pants situation and then I just wore looser tops.

This is time around I'm a SAHM so I don't really care what I look like around the house. But I'm sure I'll be pulling out my Bella Band soon. I never had much bloat with DS or with this pregnancy (so far). Fingers crossed I have a few more weeks before the pants get tight!
  • yaeger07 So I've still got 3 days to eat? Better get started.

WkoutMomtoBe Bellabands for sure. There's also a code offer where you just pay shipping on them.

  • I'm resisting the urge to look right now for maternity clothes - it's hard! I also will probably look at consignment shops (I already LOVE women's resale shops like Style Encore and Clothes Mentor), Old Navy, and Target. A few months ago (before TTC) I found a really cute long black skirt at Old Navy and didn't even realize it was maternity! I thought it was just nice and stretchy in the waist....

To be honest, once we tell friends and family I'm also hoping for a few maternity hand-me-downs as well.  :)  @yaeger07 I second the dresses/leggings, I will be doing that a lot when it cools down as well!

DYING at this!! I'm totally bloat-showing and dressing to hide it.  I can't even suck it in flat at this point. I'm kind of ready to be actually showing so I have a valid excuse for the belly I'm sporting.

Also my face is already starting to get a little puffy so I'm downing water like a crazy person to fight this water retention, which makes me pee every 30 minutes, which made someone in the office go "What? Are you pregnant or something?" This is going to be a loooong two months!

Ditto all this! I teach at a university so not back to work yet but I feel like I peed all the time as is but I worry about teaching and symptoms/peeing. I'm not worried about people noticing me pee since we all have our own office. As far as noticing...I suspect my students to notice before anyone else so that'll be interesting what they say/ask.

A coworker congratulated me on being pregnant during my TWW. I vigorously denied it and went in my office and cried. (Joke's on me!)

I was thinking of checking out Le Tote to fill in my maternity wear. Then I saw that it was like $70 a month. Hell naw.

  • @clickclackmoo, I can't believe someone congratulated you during the TWW. What made them think you were?? I just find it so rude when people comment on a pregnancy before they KNOW you are pregnant. Like, unless I've announced, don't assume!

I had a friend who asked to rub my other friend's stomach when she was pregnant (still in first trimester). After he touched her belly he was like "Wait, you are pregnant right??" I was shocked! Why on EARTH would you ask to touch someone's stomach when you are not 110% sure that they are pregnant??? I find it weird when people ask to touch my belly when I am pregnant regardless, so I couldn't believe he would do that!
  • @STM2017 I'm relatively thin, but I have a belly left over from baby #1 (and possibly drinking too much beer). I was wearing a dress with pleats in the front (that I actually loved during early pregnancy last time), so I guess I can see it. But still. It really hurt my feelings, especially since the TWW is kinda nerve wracking as it is.

I CANNOT imagine asking to rub anyone's belly, let alone if you weren't 100% sure. OMG.

  • I felt so good yesterday and got so much accomplished. Today I feel so blah. I feel exhausted, pudgy, and nauseous. Eating something helps a tiny bit but nothing sounds good AT ALL. I had been doing so well with my water intake too - today it makes my stomach turn to think about drinking any.
I really want to just do nothing this weekend but sleep but a very busy two year old and a husband that's gone for the weekend won't allow for that.

  • @TheJerilu I'm doing this too, nothing crazy but I did get some nice jeans, a black maxi skirt, and a few light sweaters from Gap Maternity that were 50% off sale with free shipping - it was less than $50 all together and much cheaper to buy off season.  I imagine I'll be able to mix in a lot of my pre-pregnancy clothes (maxi dresses, blazers, cardigans, unbuttoned blouses) and won't need to invest too much in maternity wear, but I'll need some on trend basics for my office and I don't want to spend a fortune on them.
  • @TheJerilu Hmmmmm...... good point.  Maybe I will look around a bit after all. I do love a sale!

  • Welp, seamonkey is definitely taking after my partner's devious side.  For lunch today, I was getting Chinese for the office and was heavy craving some red curry chicken, as spicy as possible.  That's cool, I haven't been queasy at all today, so I eat it up, delicious.  One hour later I'm trying my best not to hork it up.

It's a listeria risk, like basically every other food on the planet.

Store bought hummus runs a risk if you eat it room-temperature or outside of 3 days after opening.  Homemade hummus is fine as long as you refrigerate it and eat it within a few days.

Rotisserie chicken runs a risk if you eat it after cooling (either room-temp or chilled).  Heating it to steaming in the microwave is fine.

When I say "runs a risk" I mean a grand total of 1600 people get sick from listeria per year in the US, per the CDC.  That's from the total population, not pregnant people.  That means 0.000005% of the US population (318.9million) get sick from it.  One in seven listeria cases are pregnant women.  I literally can't show the percentage of likelihood that a pregnant woman in the U.S. gets listeria without jumping into scientific notation; that's how rare it is.

If you are observing even the most basic proper food-handling, your risk is even lower.  Heat your meat, refrigerate your leftovers, don't eat old food.

Sorry, I just think the whole listeria thing is the most bogus fearmongering ever when it comes to pregnancy.

  • All pants should be maternity pants. Honestly, they fit the human body better. They just do. Unless you are less than 1% body fat when you sit down and lean over there is going to be something there cutting into your pants. I understand the slipping thing which can be a probably. But, if you find the right pair... it is amazing.

No, you don't fail.  This is why I hate the listeria fearmongering; it makes women feel crummy about themselves for something that is about as statistically likely as being struck by lightning in a given year (0.000001%).

Sabra hummus has had one listeria recall that I'm aware of - which they requested due to finding a contaminated sample at their factory so the recalled the recent lots to be certain.  No illnesses were reported related to that Sabra hummus recall.

Obviously you should make your own choices, but so long as you're buying your rotisserie chicken from a reputable place and you're not eating it a week after purchase, you're way more than 99% likely to be fine.

  • @TheJerilu I had never heard that re: rotisserie chicken - I'm definitely not giving that one up because I love Costco's chickens so much - I'll just be mindful of the temp I guess.

Here's a question: I am a fervent back sleeper, which I know is fine right now but could lead to discomfort down the road. Has anyone successfully trained themself to sleep on their left side? I'm trying to put off purchasing one of those maternity body pillows for a bit longer, but right now I cannot fall asleep on my side *at all* whenever I try and it worries me a bit.
