TTC after 35

Hobbies...

What are some of your favorite hobbies, even if you don't do them all that often due to time, money, etc.?  What are you interested in trying but haven't yet?

Unexplained Infertility - Trying naturally

Re: Hobbies...

  • Thanks for the opportunity to procrastinate ;). What are some of yours @jennh75b?

I'm a pretty new private pilot (got my certificate a couple of years ago), but I haven't been up in the air since February (wedding planning kind of took over - out wedding date was actually the third anniversary of my first solo).  Next up is instrument training if things ever settle down.  I like snow skiing in the winter and scuba diving in warm water (making it mostly an infrequent vacation thing).

I'd like to dance more (jazz and ballet, some tap but it's been a while) but it's hard to get to the studios in Hollywood (on weekends a 90 minute class will take up 3 hours of my time with not a long commute).  I haven't picked up a tennis racquet in years or a golf club in months, but I'd like to give both of those another go.  I should cycle more too.  On our honeymoon in June, I had my first canyoneering experience and that was fun, so I'd be open to doing more of that too.

So many things (that are more interesting to do that work), so little time...

  • Well, I'm looking to get back into yoga - I went for one summer a couple years back, but then had terrible back problems that got worse and haven't gone since.  My back is finally in a better place so I wanted to go back.

I enjoy (gentle) hikes through the woods with H, and every time we go, I tell H how much I love it and would like to make it a regular thing and go try different state parks, etc., but he's not as nature-oriented as myself, so we don't really go all that often.

I go through phases of enjoying cooking and trying new recipes, but then get lazy and cook the same old same old.  But it's something I enjoy when I'm in the mood (and have time on work nights!).

Reading.  Let's just say I could use more hobbies, this is kind of why I asked what others do.

  • I have a few hobbies, but my main one is belly dance. I adore it. I've been doing it for about 5.5 years now and I would probably say it saved my mental health. I was kind of in a bad place in my head and it sorted me out. :)

I also weight lift and used to do crossfit but it got too expensive :( I also used to do taekwondo and would love to get back into a martial art, but again - money is an issue.

As far as ones I'd like to try, I'd like to get really good at sewing. Right now I can make pajama pants and that's about it.

    Oh I also read a TON. :)
  • @hezzer78 that's why I run, it has saved me both mentally and physically. And on Saturday mornings a great way to socialize with my friends! :-)
I read a lot too, but lately I've been working at re-learning French. I know it's back in my head, somewhere (ha ha)....just a few minutes with an app every day, some Twitter exposure, etc.

  • This is fun! How great to hear everyone's interests. Thanks @jennh75b

I used to paint and play piano, oboe, flute, guitar, and sing. I've gotten back into piano now that we have one again (yay!) and I just did some paintings for a friend's nursery.

Like @amberruka and @hezzer78 I also run, although it's been walking lately since we moved into a neighborhood that's ALL hills. Haha.

@amberruka I also used to be fairly fluent in French, but never used it so now I'm pretty rusty. For my job it would be great to know Spanish, which I tried earnestly to learn, but found myself replacing Spanish words with French ones :(

  • I do that will Swahili too, replace words, it's like your brain misfiring! (I lived in Tanzania for a year after college). I grew up just south of Montreal and thought French would be more useful, should have taken Spanish....;-)

  • @hezzer78 Belly dancing sounds fun and freeing!

@PoeMasque I played piano until I graduated high school and sadly lost a lot of what I learned since then. I bought an electric piano a few years ago and need to practice so I can play all the songs from movies I bought sheet music for!

When I try to think of what my hobbies are now, it's hard! Of course the first thing that comes to mind:

I take interval training/circuit training classes several days a week and just took up bike riding. I forgot how much fun riding a bike is. It's also a lot harder than I remember it being as a child...

Otherwise I pretty much just watch a lot of television.

I also spend a lot of time with my two dogs. Because they're awesome.

  • Dumb tv! Most days I feel like I just need to veg out and not think. I do like to read but the book really has to grab my attention right away. I love yoga but hardly make it to class. I like to cook and meal plan, I go in spurts where I'm super into it and then I give up for a while. I have a garden and I don't really like "gardening" but I like having the fresh vegetables so I guess it still counts as a hobby.

@hezzer78 belly dancing sounds so fun! I used to do a belly dancing workout video a looooong time ago and loved it. I would love to take a ballroom dancing class.

  • @christina239 @eggplantface  It is really fun and absolutely freeing! :) I got started doing it in what's called an american cabaret style (mostly what you think of when you think belly dancer - in restaurants and what not) and really fell in love with the music first, but now I do more of what's called tribal fusion. You should check out a cabaret or egyptian class! :)
