Bad Eye

My LO has had a clogged eye duct since he was born. I've tried a few things to help it get better and my ped told me that it will just resolve itself. Lately it's been so bad that under his eye has been red and raw, so I was just wondering if anyone has any tricks to help? I've done warm water, and breast milk and they don't really help.

Re: Bad Eye

  • My LO had this until 8 weeks solid, then off and on until 12 weeks. BM was the best and I found it would clear up within a day if I put fresh BM (as in straight from the boob) in, then massage the inner corner of his eye while it was full of BM it would clear right up! Hopefully that helps!

  • Both my girls had this problem and i would wipe it with a clean damp cloth and put in BM at every diaper change and any other time I noticed it getting goopy. It usually took a couple days to resolve and sometimes would even get worse before getting better. I would suggest to just keep trying.
  • My daughter had it solidly until she was 4 months old.  We just tried warm compresses and keeping it as clean as possible, and massaging the duct.  If we didn't attend to it right away it would lead to irritation on the skin around the eye :( One day, it got really bad for a few days and then poof, gone and never returned.  I thought maybe the really bad few days was her body working out the clog once and for all, but who knows.  It is frustrating though!
  • Our LO has two partially clogged tear ducts and our pedi told us to massage her tear ducts daily.  They've improved, but we're still working on it.  He said they almost always resolve by 1 year.  We massage starting at the inner corner of her eye, and pressing down along her nose.  (I think I'm describing this badly, but there are you tube videos, I believe, for an example.)  Just make sure your hands are washed and you are gentle but firm, as our dr described it.  Good luck!
  • We are dealing with the same thing. I'm out of BM now though so that's no longer an option for us. We massage the duct and use a warm washcloth but it hasn't seemed to help.
  • My girls clogged duct just cleared a few weeks ago. She had 1 side blocked since birth. One morning she woke up and it was just resolved, we were so happy cause it was always so gross and bothersome. I'm not sure if this did it or not, but the night before I massaged the duct with a warm, wet washcloth with pretty good pressure. I always tried massaging it with finger, breast milk, etc but those did nothing. I think the texture/pressure of the washcloth is what finally did it, or it was a coincidence. Google how to massage it. If it's really bad, your pedi can give you ointment.
