My MIL bought a handmade gown for DD to wear for her christening/baptism when she was first born, well we never got her baptised. So we are getting both the kids baptised in Feb and I have no idea if these are only for girls or for both?
It's up to you really. I had a gown made out of my wedding dress and plan on all of our kids wearing it. It's very simple and not extremely girly, so DS wore it and DD will wear it when we have her baptized.
Yes they can. We have a gown that has been worn by literally over 15 people and has been handed down to each child. It is a gown and worn by both girls and boys. If I was buying something new I would not buy a gown but get a cute christening suit (sold by the gowns in stores).
I think it's up to you. I didn't put my son in a gown...couldn't find one that wasn't too girly. Instead we got him a one-piece gorgeously simple white outfit from Von Maur. I didn't like the suit-like ones for boys either. I'm picky.
If they are family heirlooms...certainly. We have one for each child so that they can have it when they are grown for their own child. We got the boys little white short sets. They were not newborns...5 months old approx.

yes - boys wear gowns all the time.
my son wore the same gown his older sister did - made from the grandmothers' wedding gowns
