TTC After a Loss

When did you decide to see a specialist?

My OB/GYN is not concerned that we have had two losses. She says that it is a miracle anybody ever gets PG considering all the factors at play. I am concerned that there is something else that is causing me to have early losses (discovered ectopic at 7 wks, cp at 5 wks). Did you wait until your OB/GYN referred you to a specialist or make the decision to see one on your own? I will be 39 in a month and scared that I am almost out of time.

Given your age, I'd be seeing a specialist soon. Unless you got pregnant right away each time, you've got to be close to the 6-month mark for TTC at AMA anyway! My OB did RPL testing after two losses (granted, neither of mine were a CP), and I am not AMA. I'd highly recommend you see a specialist for a consult. It can take a few months at busy practices to get an appointment anyway.

  • I agree with @RiverSong15. I'm 37 and my Dr referred me to an RE after my body was having a difficult time adjusting after my 1st MC. I got pregnant again before I started the work up, but had another loss. I'm now going through the full RPL work up after 2 losses. If I were younger, I would maybe wait, but being AMA adds additional pressure.
  • I would call someone now. Nothing with an RE is fast and you might as well get a foot in the door. Being older than 35, you only have to have been trying for 6 months without a successful pregnancy in many cases.

I'm sorry your OB dismissed you like that. Do you need your OB to make a referral or can you self refer with your insurance? My OB was unconcerned with my difficulty conceiving and I took matters into my own hands and self-referred. Turns out we have a sperm issue, so thankfully, I didn't take his advice to go until November 2016 (after my November 2015 loss) to see an RE.
  • @RiverSong15 @chloe97 @BornReady - thank you for the advice. I guess I better start looking for one.
@BornReady - Luckily I do not need a referral with my insurance.
I am 4 or 5 dpo, so I will start researching. I guess I could always make an appointment and cancel if I happen to get a BFP in Aug.

  • You should definitely qualify to see a specialist with 2 MC and being over the age of 35.
I am 32, so they told me that I didn't qualify because I only had 2 losses and was not considered AMA.  *sigh*  So, I did meet with a MFM to know what my options and next steps are, but am sort of stuck until I have a 3rd loss in what I can do.

  • I'm 35 and I did a few months after d&e when periods got much heavier and I feared I wasn't ovulating. but as it turns out, I didn't need a referral from my doc to get an appt.

  • Thank you all for your advice. I called a clinic today and am waiting for a call back. Also talked to DH about it. I was worried that he would not want to go. He was open to the idea and said he would.

  • I am 35 and mine referred me after my second loss to see if they have any recommendations to help me stay pregnant. So I would ask about getting one now.
  • After my third loss I took it upon myself to schedule and appointment with an RE. My regular OB sent me to a MFM but she really didn't say or do anything. I had already had RPL tabs drawn after my second. My RE did the saline sono and genetics by the one we saw the MFM so all she said was basically aspirin and progesterone and come back with pregnant. I am staying with the RE to actually get pregnant and get it to stick. I'm glad I took it upon myself to find a RE, I like him and he had found some further complicating issues that I feel are best managed with him

  • @Hopefulmommy1980 - thank you, getting pregnant doesn't seem to be a problem for me, it is staying pregnant that is very concerning. I really hope it happens for you and all the other wonderful ladies on this board very soon.
@SnobunnieMel - That is my biggest fear right now, that there is something "wrong" with me and no diagnostics have been done or suggested. I called an RE last Thursday, they returned my call on Friday when I was away from my phone. I called back and left another message, but haven't heard back yet. I realize now that I really don't know anything and am so thankful for all the information and knowledge everyone is willing to share.

  • I agree with previous posters, it's a good thing to get yourself checked. After my third loss, given than I'm 29 and I've had 2 second trimesters losses my Ob didn't think I needed and RE since my problem isn't with fertility, she referred me to a MFM and I got tested for everything and they couldn't find anything wrong with me. Keep in mind that there might not be anything wrong with you either, hopefully that's the case. The only thing they can offer is a profilactic cerclage, progesterone and aspirin for my next pregnancy.

  • @fiorip - I am so sorry for your losses. I cannot image how difficult that was for you. FX that prophylactic cerclage, progesterone and aspirin treatment work next time. Thank you for the advice and information.

  • After my second loss I was devastated, and my OBGYN was not impressed. He said it is not a problem until you had 3 losses. And the pain and suffering and trauma??? Then I knew I had to change doctors.

i got recommendations with a support group that I had been visiting for parents that had suffered mc stillborn or child loss.

i am also AMA so these things need to be addressed by someone more empathic than my former dr.

Best of luck with your appointment!!

  • @yolandamunoz - I am sorry for your losses. I agree with you completely about our doctors being more sympathetic and aggressive given AMA. The clock may not be ticking much longer for some of us. Thank you for your input.
