Re: GD Check In - 7.25.16

  • How are your numbers going?
My fasting numbers are too high now so I'm on Metformin 500mg twice a day. I have a specialist appointment 8/15 so my OB started me back on the Metformin for now.

    Any new go to foods?
Eggs/Egg salad and cheeseburgers! Never makes me spike!

    Any recipies to share?
Nope but I'm looking for good ones because I'm sick of the same foods over and over!

GTKY - If you won the lottery and the money would be unlimited for the rest of your life (I wish!!), what would be your top 5 list to buy/do immediately?

    1. Buy tons of land and build a custom house!
    2. Pay off all debt for us and our immediate families! (School loans especially for my sister and I!)
    3. Open a rescue farm!
    4. Take a long vacation!
    5. Open a daycare and special needs school!

    How are your numbers going?
I still don't know. I just got the meter in the mail, but they told me to bring it to my nutritionist appointment and they'd show me what to do, that's not until August 11th.

    Any new go to foods?
My work bought Popsicles for the employees during an event last week and my boss bought me sugar-free ones. They were actually really good and now my go to snack at work is one of those. Pineapple is my favorite!

    Any recipies to share?
Not yet, but I definitely plan on looking for good dinners this week.

GTKY - If you won the lottery, what would be your top 5 list to buy/do?
    1. Pay off all our debt.
    2. Be a SAHM with Bean so I can watch them grow and explore the world.
    3. Invest so we can retire comfortably and pay for our kids educations.
    4. Rescue all the puppies!!!
    5. Travel.

GTKY - If you won the lottery, what would be your top 5 list to buy/do?
Farm house, a new car, a kick ass air conditioner, a dog for my husband, and his dream kitChen.
  • @nataliemaephotography I'm not trying to get in your business, but knowing what I know now, I'd Youtube a few different videos on your specific glucometer, and go ahead and start testing if you have all of the supplies on hand.  This is my second pregnancy with GD.  That seems like a long time to go without knowing your numbers.  I'm sure all of us have been given similar goals for readings, but they might differ slightly.  My OB wants my fasting below 90, and 1 hour after eating to be less than 140.  If yours are way off, you could alert your OB or nutritionist ahead of your appointment.  Numbers can change suddenly from week to week, and you won't know they've changed without measuring.  Also, certain foods can suddenly produce different results.

    How are your numbers going?

Much better now that I'm avoiding bread for the most part.

    Any new go to foods?

I'm loving these sundried tomato wraps for a heated ham, turkey, swiss wrap.

    Any recipes to share?

No, sorry, I'm not much good in the kitchen these days.

GTKY - If you won the lottery, what would be your top 5 list to buy/do?

    Pay off all debt.

    Invest for retirement.

    Increase children's college funds.

    Renovate my house.

    Buy a beach house.

  • @nataliemaephotography I agree with the previous poster to definitely try and figure out how to use your meter now. The earlier you can start, the better. I had to wait two weeks for an appt but I started testing the day I got the meter. I also brought the records I had to my nutritionist so we could see what was working best for me.
My dr varies from @JessK1014 because my dr likes fasting below 95 and 80-120 two hours after my meals.

  • How are your numbers going? Eh, ok for type 1 but not ideal, getting harder to control. I feel like I am constantly increasing the insulin rates in my pump

    Any new go to foods?
Not really, just trying to get more calcium and protein since my levels are low apparently

    Any recipies to share?
I don't really know much specific to a GD diet but I love just the basic chopped cucumbers and tomatoes mixed with Italian dressing and chilled for a while. Also good - chopped tomatoes, avocado, and chickpeas with whatever type of dressing you want

GTKY - If you won the lottery, what would be your top 5 list to buy/do?
I wish I could be noble and say become a stay at home mom but I'd say at least take a 6-month maternity leave, and then hire a nanny. Build an addition to our house. Go on a real vacation. Save for my kid's/kids' college funds

@nataliemaephotography I'm also not trying to give unsolicited advice but I agree that you might as well start testing your blood sugar sooner rather than waiting 2 more weeks, and call your doctor with results (or, at least find out what their recommended range is). You can't harm anything by testing now except maybe waste a couple test strips when you're first figuring it out. Also, a lot of times health insurance has like a nursing line that you can call for guidance, or the monitor company will def be able to tell you step by step how to use it.
  • There was nothing in the paperwork the midwife gave me for suggested ranges, but I figured the nutritionist would give them to me. Also I work with someone who's diabetic and thought about bringing it in to have them show me how to use the meter. I know the doctor is going to take one look at my food log and slap me, I am SO not a healthy eater, not necessarily sweets, but I eat out a lot. I'm honestly shocked that I have GD and not high blood pressure.
  • How are your numbers going?  Harder to control and seem to be creeping up.

    Any new go to foods?
Flatout flatbread! It's low carb, high fiber and protein. I've been making little pizzas out it for lunch by just adding jarred tomato sauce, mozzerella and popping it in the toaster oven. I could get a little fancier and add meats and veggies, but it does the trick.

    Any recipies to share?
    See above.

GTKY - If you won the lottery, what would be your top 5 list to buy/do?

Are we talking like the super powerball? Because maaaaaaan have we fantasized about that. There have been many days that we play the "If we won 500 million dollars what would we do?" game. Usually on long drives.

    1. Give immediate family each enough to pay off their debts and a little extra to do what they'd like.
    2. Gift closest friends specific gifts tailored to help fulfill their dreams. ie: I have a friend who is writing a screenplay for a TV show, I'd donate to having it produced.
    3. Open our dream restaurants
    4. Buy investment properties around the world so we can travel
    5. Buy a HUGE plot of land, build several houses on it for us, our families and closest friends. It would have a community pool, playground, garden and an animal rescue. lol... so an idealistic commune?

@nataliemaephotography you can still eat out but just keep it low on carbs. Carbs includes the sugar in it so that's the number you will be looking at when picking food.

  • Hey guys, can I join your thread? I was just told I have GD and will be going in on Monday to be told what the next steps are. I don't have anything to contribute because I'm a newbie with all of this. I didn't have it with my daughter so this is all new territory for me.

  • @nataliemaephotography I'm sorry this is long, and I'm not trying to give unwanted advice but, knowing how tough diabetes can be to learn to manage over the years, I'm just trying to imagine doing so in a time crunch like a few months. I'd suggest going ahead and asking your midwife for your target ranges, when/how often to test, etc because a nutritionist isn't really trained for making those type of medical recommendations. There's no reason really to have to wait until your nutritionist appt, so if your midwife can't give you some guidance I'd strongly recommend looking into a doctor or endocrinologist managing your GD care. In addition to your coworker, the midwife, monitor company, and/or even your health insurance (if they have a nurse line), can talk you through how to use your monitor. Good luck!  <3

And welcome @Michi1382...I'm sorry about your test results but I hope you get some comfort from the support here! Does anyone have suggestions for things to ask a doctor for someone having their first GD-related dr appt? Like things maybe you wish you knew or had asked earlier on?
  • @UponAStar16 Thank you so much! I really don't know what to ask or expect. When I do ask for numbers I won't know what they necessarily mean so I've been trying to google what's a good range.

  • @Julia70286. I made the quiche tonight,  and it was good.   So easy to assemble.   My picky hubby even had a second helping. I hope that I have leftovers for breakfast!
  • Forgot to say, I did use a frozen pie crust instead.   I docked it and filled it without prebaking.   Next time I will dock and prebake it for 5 minutes or so to get it a bit crispier, but it works this way too.  I'd just prefer a bit more crunch on the bottom next time.

Even DS (3) ate it. It helps I put his favorite meat in it. ...ham!
  • Does anyone get the spins when the sugar is over a 7? I feel like I just walked off the tea cups multiple times a day I almost fainted in a store the other day from it.
  • @Mintz1982 I'm not familiar with the scale you are using.

I haven't had many spikes, but I did in my last pregnancy and this pregnancy experience a few lows, and I definitely feel very shaky, dizzy then.  I kept glucose tabs with me during my first pregnancy when I was on insulin for GD in the event of lows.

I'm not sure what the recommended advice is for highs.  Perhaps someone else has more advice.

  • So glad to hear you liked it @JessK1014 ! Yeah, I like my crust a little crispier too!

@Mintz1982  I'm not familiar with the scale you're using either. My doc recommends keeping between 80-120, but I do notice that if I'm over, I feel like my body is restless.

  • @Julia70286 I think it's because I'm canadian mY meter measures different.
  • I'm recommended to stay between 4 and 7 on my meter 8 and above is bad it's MMOL/L measurements.
  • @Mintz1982 Ah ha! That's why! Looks like it works out pretty much the same. I haven't really noticed the spins when I'm over, but I do feel very restless. I usually try to drink a couple of glasses of water and go for a walk, of course though you wouldn't want to go walking around if you're feeling spinny.

  • I do baby steps I live in apartment building so I walk the halls that way if I do fall I am more likely to be helped
  • @Mintz1982 if my sugar is too high, I feel really tired. Too low and I shake.
