  • Dr appointment for Panorama blood draw today. Office is right next to the Fenway Target, so I spent my lunch hour eating a veggie plate....and cheetos. Half healthy is better than zero healthy, right?

OMG THERE'S A FENWAY TARGET!? When I was in college in Boston we would get Zipcars to go to Target in Somerville or Everett.  No wonder rents are through the roof now!  It's a whole new city since I left.

And yeah, you're good.  Veggie beats cheetos, cheetos beats ice cream, ice cream beats veggies.  That's just science.

    I'm tired.
  • @Steelerfan78 - Should we sticky the poll? Seems like it could get lost pretty easily...
  • @Kenya715 I would think so. I requested it in the discussion, but if a couple others do it as well, it may get stickied faster.

  • Two things 1) thanks for everyone's thoughts on my back pain. It's gone and I'm embarrassed to say that I think it was due to such bad gas (1st timer here).  Yeah. Sooo 2) I would also find out the gender tmr if I could.  I'm having cvs on Thursday and I think they can tell.  Resukts take two weeks and I'll be more worried and the genetic results that gender.   Hopefully the genetics will be fine and I can find out the sex!

Yay for reading! I guess I'll start a thread and we can brainstorm ideas for which book we'd like to start with. **Disclaimer** The last book club I was in was basically just for show so I don't know the basics of doing one. But we read a book and discuss, right? Seems easy enough. **

  • +1 for book club!

As for finding out this early it was mostly to make sure baby was genetically not at risk for a few things that pop up occasionally in my family.

But also I'm a very type A FTM with no hope of a baby shower so I need all the time to plan all the things and buy all the goods. So finding out early was awesome!
  • +1 for book club!

we did it in my last bmb and someone found a list of questions about the book to help us discuss

  • @BumpasaurusRex the last few books I've read had book club questions available for free either on-line or at the back of the book, so that seems like it would be a good starting place for discussion.

  • @MrsLittleMac Why no hope of a baby shower? If you don't mind me asking...

  • So, I'm in an off-site location today with one other person and he keeps going into the bathroom to poop (which is whatever, everybody poops) but he sprays so much god damn air freshener when he's done I can taste it in my mouth from like 30 feet away and it's nauseating.  Also, if your pooping three times a day you might need to see a doctor.

Eh, I work with all guys and have no close female friends to speak of. All of my friends/family are around 2000 miles away and I don't expect anything out of them--they all have their own things to worry about, especially around the holidays :)

@Gingersnap one of our cats bit my finger in the middle of the night last night and woke me up. I think she wanted pet but still it hurt and it woke me up, I totally get the pesky pets during sleep time :)

@MrsDramaK I wanted to love your post but didn't want to all at once. It made me laugh about the air freshener but I feel bad it was that nauseating and strong.

My husband and son have issues that doctors can't figure out. There are days we map out routes for errands based on accessible bathrooms because you never knew when he's going to get an "attack". Your co worker probably has seen a doctor. it sucks about the air freshener but better than the alternative ;)

I was busy being sick in the bathroom, but did notice DD sneaking around while I was in there. She managed to get by me with the shampoo and I walked out to her applying it all over her head in the dining room. She actually did a pretty good job, I was impressed hah

Xstatic3333, which college in Boston did you attend? Unless that's too revealing, nevermind obviously! I have one cousin who went to BC,  another BU. I've also had another cousin go to Tufts, another to Harvard, one to Lesley in Cambridge etc. I have a huge, extremely high achieving family. Most of my family are still situated in this area and always have been. Are you from the area? I'm living within walking distance to the Target in Somerville right now at the home I grew up in as a kid, but it's only temporary (we're in a terrible situation right now as far as housing that I haven't talked about on here.) We were living in Worcester, but down here now til we can find a new place. My grandparents own this house, otherwise we wouldn't be here. The rents are astronomical, nothing like when I grew up here as a kid. They just rented the 2 bedroom next to us for $2,200 a month and the studio below it for $1,350. The 2 family across the street just went for 1.5 mil.

    Hahahahah this is amazing.
  • @Jab3 it's not that revealing to say I went to BU, because it's gigantic! I grew up in Worcester and lived in Somerville (Union/Inman) after college for a few years, so we've crossed paths quite a bit! It is truly crazy what the Somerville rents have done. My BFF was recently renting a tiny in-law without a separate entrance, 20 minute walk from the T, for more than my mortgage on my house in a nearby-ish small city that I won't say but you can probably guess ;-) Still, I loved living there and hope it keeps its character as the prices shoot up.

Sorry for your tough housing situation. MA is so crazy right now. Do you have the ability to move around the area a bit or do you need to stay in greater Boston?
  • I would really enjoy a book club! I love to read and am currently on a binge. I go through ebbs and flow of reading- I often get in book hangovers and nothing is as good as the last book I read. I know Gone Girl isn't exactly the best novel of our time but it was so engrossing I couldn't put it down. After that it was a good 3 months before I actually read a new book! Lol

    Go BU! Very cool.

Wow, what are the chances! I believe it about your BFF and yes, I think I can guess where it is you're talking about :)

Well, we don't need to stick around here, but I am trying to stay in MA. DH works in Framingham which I've looked into, but is also ridiculously expensive. I'm not looking to spend anymore than $1,100 max for monthly rent because sadly that's all we can really afford right now. The income isn't so much the issue as a few other factors though. We're being met with resistance since we have our 100lb yellow lab even though he's the best dog ever. Literally never barks, very obedient, non destructive, all around great dog. Of course no landlord believes me when I try to tell them that (even when I offer to provide references and explain that he's actually also considered a therapy dog for DS.)

The biggest hurdle we're facing is our housing record. The place we were living in Worcester evicted us for falling behind one month ($850.) We tried to give them the money once we got caught up and they wouldn't take it. I kid you not. They were trying to simultaneously sell the building we were living in and trying to get their own relatives/friends in there so they jumped so fast to get us out as soon as the opportunity presented itself. It was brutal. Most landlords won't even give me the chance to explain what I just stated above, as soon as they see or hear the word eviction, boom we're done. We've offered to pay double what people are asking for first, last and security and they still won't take us.

So, technically, we're considered a homeless family right now. I can't get us into any shelters/programs either because of our income (we're considered low income, but just high enough not to qualify for anything.) Our time here is running out and I'm scared shitless that we're literally going to end up on the street. Sob story central haha When I read all the posts about people closing on their first house or buying new homes/adding additions and I look around at everyone I know IRL who are doing the same, I feel like such a failure. I would be so happy just to have any place to live right now, I can't even fathom having a house of our own. We thought we were safe where we were in Worcester, but that obviously wasn't the case. It's wasn't supposed to be this way and the timing is obviously terrible. We've spread the word to everyone we know, but so far no one has any connections strong enough to help us out. I just keep trying to find a landlord who will work with us. That's why I like coming on here because I need to step away from it for breaks after hearing "sorry, no way" 50 times a day. Debbie Downer rant over. Sorry for the length.
  • @Jab3 I am so so sorry that you and your family are dealing with this. I grew up in a similar situation (my parents filed bankruptcy and then had an incredibly hard time trying to rent anywhere - even years later). Quick question though, at your old place in Worcester, were you actually evicted (like a sheriff showed up with an eviction lawsuit and then you had to go to court), or was it just a letter from your landlord (aka a notice of eviction) saying that you had three days (or so) to move out?
  • I'm so sorry, @Jab3.  That's so tough.  I haven't been in your exact situation, but I was once in a situation where H (then BF) and I were looking for a place while he was on unemployment and my income was all under the table (which I know is wrong now-I wasn't really thinking things through at the time).  It was amazing how rude people were, even when, like you, we offered extra money upfront.  If you want to deny me, fine, but is it necessary to also make me feel like a total loser because I'm nannying my way through school? What finally worked was finding a landlord of smallish building (10 units) who just kind of clicked with us and didn't bother checking references or running credit.  It's tough with the landlords who really depend on one unit to pay their own mortgage.  Hang in there; I'll think good thoughts for you that something comes up soon!

And yeah, Framingham is NOT worth what it currently costs!  For my $0.02, I'd look in the Clinton/Hudson/Marlborough area.  Clinton has a lot of apartments and is a funny little town, but super affordable, pretty, and convenient to 495.  We also lived in Northbridge/Sutton/Millbury/Uxbridge land for a while and that could work for your purposes too.
  • @Jab3 - I'm so sorry you're in a sh!tty situation right now.  I hope you guys find something that works for your family soon.

Sjackson408, the sheriff showed up at our door and served us with a summons to court to proceed with the eviction process. We filed a motion to stay which was denied. Prior to that, we were given a 14 day notice to quit. My sister and cousins GF who are both lawyers said that although it was a majorly scumbag thing to do, not to mention completely unreasonable, they were within their legal rights to do it. I can't stand involving my sis in anything law related unless I absolutely have to because I do not want our relationship to suffer because of it. All our belongings are currently in a huge storage unit in Worcester and we have until mid September to get it all out or one of two things will happen. We can either pay the $300 monthly storage fee to keep it going (which we don't have the $ for, possibly for a month or two, but not continuously going forward) or it will be auctioned off. The kids keep asking us where all their stuff is :( I tried to keep out all their most special little stuff, but we couldn't take much. Did you ever resent your parents for having to deal with that when you were growing up??
  • @Jab3 We lost all our belongings twice when I was growing up. The only item I was bitter about was a miniature motorcycle my dad had when he was growing up and had given to me when I was five. We rebuilt the engine together, one of the only clear memories of quality time I have with him. I think the sentimental value is the only reason it stands out to me as a total loss--I don't remember the toys or the clothes or the furniture though. Maybe see if there is anything they are super attached to and try to get it out just in case?
  • @Jab3, I am so sorry for your situation and wish you nothing but the best.   Have you found out if there are any county programs that can help you?

  • I'm so sorry @Jab3, I hate that storage fees are so unreasonable. Are there any storage places further out of your area that would be significantly cheaper?
  • jab3-2jab3-2 member
Xstatic3333, YES to everything you said. And thank you for the other suggestions for a good locations. I will check those out. I really like Clinton actually, I would be thrilled if we could find a little place there. I would be thrilled with any of those though! Thanks to the rest of you too that acknowledged what I said that I didn't directly respond to.
  • jab3-2jab3-2 member
MrsLittleMac, luckily I think I managed to keep everything out that they are most attached to and anything with strong sentimental value. I think they're just confused right now (understandably so) because they haven't actually seen our storage unit with all our stuff still in it. I'm sorry you lost that little mini motorcycle as a kid.
Yogadevil, there are other cheaper places around, but with the sheer amount of stuff we have in there, the prices are still pretty steep. It's like our life (material wise I mean) is sitting in a storage unit right now. I found one as cheap as $75, but it's only for a minimal amount of things.
Partyof6? You would be disturbed by the amount of programs I've contacted to try and get help for those in our situation and the responses I've gotten back. There's a ton of waiting lists, we're slightly over the income, those in shelter get precedence over those on the streets or doubled up, no funding left, single moms only, threatening to take my kids away, etc. I'm beyond discouraged at this point and just know we need to do whatever it takes to get these kids some stability and a roof over their heads. It's getting tougher to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but I know if we keep trying it's got to be there somewhere.
  • jab3-2jab3-2 member
Sorry, meant to say the light at the end of the tunnel has to be there somewhere, not that it's got to. I sound like something weird out of a movie, I'm tired. Need to go to bed haha
  • Ugh ugh ugh I'm so sorry that's happening to you right now. Do you have to legally disclose that you were evicted or can you say something along the lines of "mutual agreement" that it was best to move? I hate this for you, so much. Glad you got all the sentimental stuff out, it probably won't even be a blip on their radar down the road. Creepy internet hugs and I hope your big break is right around the corner!
  • Wow, @Jab3 that's a terrible situation. Wishing you all the best. For what it's worth, when I was little our stored possessions were auctioned off due to non-payment (twice) and I've never resented my mother for it. Looking back I see how hard things were, and I know that she did the best she could. Seeing their parents bear through and be strong and love them through the hard times you're experiencing is probably a better gift for your kiddos than their "stuff" will ever be. They're going to grow up to be proud of you. I am of my mom... she went through a lot and did a great job and loved us fiercely.

Even without that (ridiculously unfair-sounding) eviction on your rental record, it's so hard to rent with a dog. We had that same problem when we were first looking to rent a place (we have two big dogs) so I feel for you. I think having no dependable living situation and dealing with all these elements outside of your control sounds unbelievably stressful. I wish there was something I could do to help!  Awkward stranger hugs for you. Your family is in my thoughts.
  • @Jab3 I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.  I'll be thinking of you and hoping for a solution soon.
