Non CIO method

just wondering if anyone has had any luck with doing something besides the CIO method. I plan on trying it this weekend but was curious if there was an alternative. As you can tell, I'm dreading it lol.

Re: Non CIO method

  • I was wondering this too! I have read about the pick up put down and don't remember what it's called....but basically make them super drowsy and set them down. Haha my LO does great at night but naps are a complete nightmare but I just can't bring myself to let him CIO. Would love to know of any of these or other gentler methods have worked for anyone

Yes! My LO needs to be rocked to sleep for naps and bedtime which is tough and that's what I'm looking to eliminate, but I don't know if I could do CIO!
  • We never did CIO, because Griffin did pretty well overall with, drowsy but awake method. We never go in and pick him back up, once we put him down either. Unless he was really inconsolable, and usually those times indicate that he is ready to get up or not ready to go to sleep yet. We may reposition him, if he scooches himself into a corner or is on his belly and whining. We also will re-instert his paci. The downfall about the pacifier is, he sleeps in a Zippadee Zip, so his little hands can't grasp the paci. himself to put it back in, if it falls out. I hope he grows a little bit more, so we can order him the Flying Squirrel sleeper from the same makers or we may even try a sleep sack, come winter time. I think if he were to be able to get the paci. back in himself, we'd have even less times we'd have to assist in getting him to fall back asleep.

I will say, within the last month, he has pretty much boycotted being rocked at all. Which made me so sad. :(  So in a way, he kicked that habit himself. We are putting him down fully awake for the most part, and it's been going well.  Naps are no different. his awake times are starting to increase to 2-2 1/2 hours, sometimes 3.

Check out "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley. It has lots of methods and ideas for getting baby to sleep, depending on exactly what the challenge is. It didn't work for us but a lot of people do have success, and I was glad I tried her ideas out before CIO.
  • @teachmegs817 my babe won't let me rock him to sleep at night either and I miss it! would be nice for him to be able to put himself down for a nap though. I've been rocking him to sleep and usually didn't have a problem laying him down after (except he is also struggling to transition sleep cycles after 45 minutes and hoping this will help!) but now as soon as I lay him down he's up in less than 5 minutes.

I feel like he's definitely extending his awake period as well so I'm having a hard time narrowing it down to when to lay him down. (Use to be 1hr 45 on the dot) Do you go off sleep signals or time?

We tried pick up put down and it did not work for us at all.  Every time we put him back down, he woke up no matter how drowsy he was and started crying.  I was also so sleep deprived by that point that I didn't have the energy to follow through for as long as it would have taken.  We wound up having to do CIO.
  • @amberjinnett Once he wakes from a nap or for the day, I can pretty much guarantee that within 2 1/2 hours tops, he's ready to go to sleep again. We may get a 3 hour window in there. So after we feed him, we'll play or if we head out to go somewhere, so be it. But he will almost always begin to get fussy, agitated, within 2- 2 1/2 hours of of being awake. Sometimes it's sooner. He is still taking 3 naps a day. We just kicked the 4th nap, not even a month ago. He may even get a 15-20 minute cat nap in, right before bed, just because he can't quite make it that long, and it's still too early for bed.

I read this with my first. Heard great things but unfortunately it didn't work for him (neither did CIO though).
  • I feel like maybe I should try this. Haha but a part of me is completely serious... A magic sleep doll, if it brings me solid naps without tears I think t could be worth it!

  • Um, I think I'm going to try it!
  • @mommaofmultiples if you do let me know your thoughts! I'm currently trying to convince my husband it will be worth the cost (or hopefully it be available on Amazon soon and he'll never have know) lol
  • Hmmm it's pretty tempting.
  • Well, now I'm getting a little skeptical!  I looked on the website and most people are saying it's been months-years and they still haven't received their doll.  They pre-ordered and paid ahead of time since it is crowd funded.  I am wondering if it's worth it to order.  Seems like our babies could be 12 months old by the time I get it. :(
  • Pretty cool idea! A little pricey but if it works, nothing is too expensive!

@mommaofmultiples I saw that too, looks like they were waiting for the approval by each country (as most baby products have a longer approval process). Shows it should be in Canada next month and from there it will be distributed to the US. But your right may be worth waiting to see if those people do get their orders starting next week! Haha

    @JanuarysBaby1 I couldn't agree more!

    edit:didn't post my whole response
  • Just saw this update on their Facebook page. The more I'm researching it the more I want to give it a try!
