Twin/multiple moms?

Hey Ladies!

Just had our first scan yesterday (posted in the u/s thread)...and it's very early twins! both measuring on target for 5wk 6d as of yesterday, so I go next week for a hb check, and then 2 weeks later for another growth scan, they said we're not out of the woods, since there is still a chance one may fade.  I feel like I can't really enjoy the excitement yet until I know we're ok.

Anyone with experience to share? How far along until you felt comfortable in knowing both would thrive? They told me by 10 weeks we would have a good idea if they would both continue.  So I will be having lots of scans over the next few weeks I guess.

I'm so very excited and yet so nervous!!! Any advice out there?

Thanks!!

  • I just found out that we are expecting twins too!  (just posted -- or tried to post -- a photo in the ultrasound thread).

For what it's worth, my RE said that once we heard heartbeats at 6.5 weeks, the risk of losing either one was less than 10% (meaning a 90+% chance that we end up with 2 babies next year, even higher chance that we end up with one).  HIgher risk than with a singleton, but honestly those were better odds than I had expected.  Of course, I did not sleep in between learning the news and hearing the heartbeats, and I still haven't really relaxed.

I can't figure out if this means we should think about telling people earlier than we were planning on?  We were going to wait until 2nd trimester for everyone except our immediate families (and were still going to wait awhile before telling even them.  We haven't told anyone except my doctors that I'm pregnant).  My thought now is, if this is going to be risky the whole time and the statistics are never going to go down to a level I'm comfortable with, maybe there is less of a reason to wait? I'm also wondering if this means I'll start showing earlier and it will be out of my hands anyway....
  • So cool! Congratulations!

  • @anonellis my RE made me nervous when he said 10 weeks would pretty much be the clue, if things were still going strong by then chances were good, it was too soon for hb yet for us, so he said right now there's still a 20% chance of 1 not thriving, but I'm hoping that we beat the odds of even getting pregnant, that we can beat these odds too :)  I will feel much better next wednesday seeing those little heartbeats (hoping & praying for 2 little beats)!!

Are you with your RE for a while still? I know I'm with my RE through almost the first tri since I'm still on hormones to help keep the pregnancy, estrogen & progesterone, so It makes me feel more comfortable knowing i'll be monitored so closely.

  • @MrsNap_515 - I'm right there with you on the bleeding - though mine seems to have been heavier and more days than yours. (Of course, coming from someone who hasn't had a period in over a decade, I'm not sure I remember what constitutes heavy vs. light bleeding.) Regardless, I'm hoping my two are still with me tomorrow when I go in for my next scan...

@anonellis - I've been having the same questions floating around my head about when to tell people. We were going to tell my immediately family, but given my recent bleeding, we decided to wait to know the twins were still there. I kind of want them to know regardless because if anything happens, we'll need the support. However, I don't want them getting all excited (or panicked) at the thought of twins before we know for sure either. Not sure about what to do...   :/

  • @weareturtles I'm hoping you have a good scan tomorrow! My nurse said not to worry unless I develop cramping or hemoraging type bleeding, she doesn't think it indicates a loss, but it's making this wait until wednesday very long!

we told just our immediate family because we could use the extra prayers, we are heading to a party with extended family this weekend, and I just hope no one slips!

  • I thought, since like, there more than a few of us now for march 2017, we can post on here again, share our worries, encourage each other on!!

I am getting a 2nd ultrasound tomorrow. Super nervous again. Finding out was like a dream last week, and seemed so far away! I want to see them again just to be sure, and I hope she finds the membrane (they are identical right now, and maybe mono mono) High Risk doc tomorrow.

So far we have told a handful of ppl only, mainly for support, and mainly immediate family.

Wish me luck everyone <3 one day at a time! Healthy and happy little beans please <3

  • Ahhhh I am so glad that there are so many of us! I'm sure I would be a nervous wreck with just one, but the twins factor has really thrown me for a loop.

Are other people having horrible morning sickness?  My doctor warned me it can be worse with twins because of all the extra hormones but I reeeeeeally had no idea what I was in for.  I've been missing a lot of work.  We haven't told anyone yet (I'm 8 weeks) but I will likely have to tell a trusted work colleague just because I have been so MIA at work.  They are good about letting people work from home, but I've barely shown my face since I was 6 weeks.

We have a 10 week appointment and plan to tell my parents after that, other family/friends at 13 weeks.  We decided that except for really close family, we are going to try not to tell people that it's twins until 16+ weeks just because I'm anxious and superstitious.

Lastly, I was totally adamant that we would be Team Green until I found out it is twins. Now I somehow feel like the situation is totally different and I HAVE to know.  Not sure what difference it makes, but that plan is totally out the window.

yah I think we are planning to announce at like 16+ weeks too, that is if my work doesn't think im way further along already. We should all be showing really early. that is what my doctor said, and my friend who recently had Didi twins said.

I have terrible morning sickness. most days I don't want to eat. I sworn I had morning sickness since like week 4, and I thought I was crazy. I drag myself to work though. Luckily I hide in front of my monitor. The last 2 days it has been better bc I force myself to eat more frequently, I have also doubled up on Folic Acid, Iron, and B6. So maybe that is helping? I am so tired ALLL the time. I think ive never felt so sick~

I did tell my boss, since I will be taking off to go to the appointments through out the weeks to come. she has been super supportive and flexible. I wish I could work at home like you. Today, I really didn't want to get up....

This is my 1st time prego too. I don't have anything "normal" to compare to, so I keep thinking oh maybe what I am feeling and everything im going through is "normal". Doctor said the same thing. "Nope.. ure at double!!!"

8 weeks ultrasound tomorrow with high risk obgyn, 9 weeks ultrasound with our regular obgyn next week.

I am so nervous of the ultrasound tomorrow. I feel like it had all been a dream! I wish I can see them all the time.

I think we will want to know what we are having, boys or girls.

  • @missmckee83 -- congrats!  That is wild!  I have no advice, except that I am in complete denial about twins and am only focused on the pregnancy and its risks (trust me, DO NOT Google photos of moms of multiples late in pregnancy).  I've really put no thought into how we are going to actually handle/afford multiple babies at once!

Please keep us posted...your ultrasound photo is so cool.  Do you know if you'll see an MFM instead of a regular OB or have you not gotten that far yet?

  • @weareturtles  that is great news.... How long between ultrasound and specialist? Right now no membrane found between my twins and no specialist has been mentioned...I emailed today and the nurse said Dr would discuss (not do...discuss) another ultrasound at my next visit on the 16th..but it seems like the other suspected mono mono have had repeats rather quickly.....
  • @butterfly_17 - I had my first ultrasound at 5w when I started spotting, they suspected twins, but thought one might be miscarrying. They had me come in at 6weeks for follow up ultrasound - showed twins, one sac, no membrane. OB went from happy face seeing two heartbeats to serious face when she saw no membrane - told me she was sending me to a specialist to see what type of twins as that determines the risks. Now I am at 7w. Saw specialist for ultrasound today, will go in for consult with specialist next week at 8w to discuss what all this means. Back to regular OB for "first prenatal appt" (haha!) the same day. Then I've been told I should expect to be going in every couple of weeks to one of my doctors since twins make me high risk. Next specialist ultrasound appt is at 13w. This is a *lot* of doctor visits for me - not something I'm used to! Hopefully you will be able to speak to your Dr and get all of these things sorted out so you know what you're dealing with!

Just got a message from my OB - I need to start taking extra folic acid, aspirin, iron and go in for an early glucose test. Apparently twins make us high risk for pre-eclampsia, anemia and gestational diabetes. Lovely. These two are gonna hear about this for their entire lives!

Anyone else on the same boat?

  • I am in the same boat! Had an US at 5.5w and saw two sacs, one with a yoke. Just went today and both are measuring a few days ahead of schedule at 7.1/7.3. Saw both heartbeats! They are doing wonderful and developing perfect! I feel like I can breath a bit now.
Try to stay positive! Good thoughts and prayers to you!
  • Congratulations all of you!

Those of you expecting multiples - did any of you have your hCG and/or progesterone levels checked early on? I did fertility treatments, and my hCG at 13dpo was 360, progesterone was 40. At 15dpo, my hCG was 790. According to betabase, those look like twin numbers. I have an ultrasound scheduled, but it's hard to wait! My symptoms are much stronger than they were with my first child and I'm exhausted all the time! I know that only an ultrasound will tell us for sure, but I was curious whether any of you had numbers that you could share for comparison's sake.

    Thanks!
  • @hayden14 - my levels were as follows:
    4w+1d (15dpo) - 710
    5w - 17803

  • My next doc appt is 8th August, this was supposed to be my first initial check in, so I will have all the first tests of everything then. I have another US on the 17th August, if there are still 3 babies looking good and healthy then I will be referred to a specialist doc who deals with multiples. I know triplets is extra high risk, but I think I would be sad if it ends up being twins. Although twins is still lots to deal with.

Also started to do a little research on equipment for triplets, and its pretty minimal. I think we will have to get pretty creative!!

  • I have twin daughters who will be 3 in October and am 9 weeks with our third. Hearing the heartbeats is fantastic!! I remember being nervous for a long time when pregnant with the girls, and I just prayed constantly and tried to breathe and rest. I know it's so hard, and you really don't know and can't do anything sometimes. We have lost two babies since our twins, and while we heard the little bean's heartbeat at 7 weeks, I have two weeks to wait until my next US and I am thanking God every day for my nausea!
I don't remember my nausea being worse than with the twins, but I know I was more tired with them! That's saying something since I have twin toddlers running around!
Juat take it really easy and rest as much as possible, and get through one day at a time. Really--REST. And line up as much help as you can! For the first three months I had someone at my house every day to hold babies so I could nap. It was the best thing I could have ever done. Best wishes, hugs to you and prayers!
  • Wonder if I should be resting more... my doc said I was fine to exercise lightly so I have been but I have spotting again today. Have any of the other multi/twin Mums out there been told to rest and take it easy? I am only 6 weeks 6 days today.
