Poop frequency question

I can't find this question in any discussions, please let me know if it's been addressed elsewhere...
So I am breastfeeding and my LO goes days with plenty of wet diapers but no poop. Latest was 5 poopless days. Then she'll have a huge explosion when she finally does go. Anyone else having this? Did your doctor tell you anything? We see the Dr in a few days. LO is 4 weeks old.

Re: Poop frequency question

  • My LO is also EBF and she poops between 4-8 times a day, some are small and some are larger.

If it's been 5 days I would put in a call to your pediatrician. While it may be totally fine, it's better safe than sorry! Plus they are used to calls, especially from FTMs!

  • EBF babies can go up to 14 days with no poop. As long as there is no pain or straining when they do go, it's totally normal.

  • As long as it's not hard and baby is not uncomfortable that's pretty normal. I wouldn't worry

  • And as long as when they do go it us copious amounts (like the blow out you are referring to).

Some days my girl poops 7 times, medium to explosive and then other days it is only 1-2 times small to medium. As long as she follows those slow days up with huge poopy diapers, our pediatrician says that is normal.

  • Yeah she definitely catches up, I've never heard of a baby with these bowel habits! I'll wait until we are the doctor in a few days. Thank you everyone!
  • My LO hadn't gone for 5 days and then when she finally went I was so excited I changed her right away. Not a good idea she continued to poop just as I put a new diaper under her cute bum! Who would of thought you get so excited about poop!
  • I learned the hard way to always wait about 10-15 minutes before changing a poopy diaper, because she always goes a few times in a row. I was tired of going through 3-4 diapers in less than 30 minutes!!!

I also learned the hard way when my Pinterest ready nursery turned into a scene out of someone's nightmare lol. She didnt go for a whole day and she finally let a little out and as i changed her, i swear she smiled first..and then all hell broke lose. Went thru 3 diapers in about 40 seconds and both my husband, myself and the walls somehow got pooped on

Omg I laughed so hard at this. I remember DS shot a poop torpedo at the wall with me once and another time pooped all over dad. Lol

Our little one is a every other day sometimes 2 days. The doctor said that is normal if she goes more than 2 days let them know but they won't worry about it until it is over a week.
  • Our son varies from day to day, night to night. Sometimes it's super small amounts and other times it's a blowout.
  • Just wanted to follow up on this bc we saw the dr today. You ladies were right, he said her poop (in)frequency is fine as long as the poop is soft when it does arrive, and she's gaining weight. He said breast milk is mostly water, not much waste, and it could take a few days for her to get enough substance for poop to form!
