*TW* do HCG #'s double with a blighted ovum?

Hi, my friend was told today she had a blighted ovum, her 1st pregnancy after a MMC in November. She was temping/tracking ovulation but it gave her crosshairs prematurely so she doesn't know when exactly she ovulated. Just based off her initial HCG #'s she should be 6 weeks today (give or take). Her U/S today showed an empty sac and she will have a follow up in 1 week, but I was under the impression HCG does not double with a blighted ovum.

I don't have any personal experience but thought that it could double initially because the placenta initially starts to form normally and makes the hcg and then for whatever reason the pregnancy stops developing and an embryo never develops.

I I hope your friend is just a little early and gets good news next week.

@penelope4612 thanks. I had no idea either as i've only had a CP and never had betas done at that time.

I don't know for sure because I didn't have betas drawn for my blighted ovum but I did pee on the clear blue easy weeks estimator tests and they rose from 1-2, 2-3, 3+ at the appropriate times. I hope your friend is just early. Did they tell her what her gestational sac was measuring? If it gets to a certain size without a fetal pole they can diagnose it as a blighted ovum with one scan (that's how mine was) if they are waiting a week it's a good sign there could still be hope.

@ceclarlinetlo I asked her but she said she didn't bother to ask and they didn't volunteer that information. I thought the same thing.

My sister has had two blighted ovums and her betas did double appropriately. Her body thought she was pregnant but there was only an empty sac. She had to have a d&c with the second one because her betas kept rising but no baby was growing. I'm sorry your friend is going through this.

Mine doubled, but they started off very low, the doubling was almost exactly double, and they never got really high. (With my BO).
This is just my personal experience, but I've seen many women have empty sacs then a beautiful growing baby with a heartbeat at their next ultrasound. It's possible her dates are off. Good luck to your friend, and best wishes. <3

My blighted ovum was discovered at 11 weeks and they measured and the sac stopped growing at 9. My numbers were at 47k and dropping by about 500 every two days. So they can get high.
