  • How have your numbers been?
They are creeping up higher in the morning. I'm really hoping I won't have to go on medication!

Any tips you've learned along the way?
Taking my reading even 20 mins early can make a big difference!

    Questions or rants?
When do you take your numbers in the morning? Right when you wake up or after getting ready? I was told you can both ways but I don't know which way is actually better! I emailed my nutritionist to ask because she never actually said and I'm wondering if it will make a difference.

GTKY - If you had no obstacles stopping you, where would you vacation?
I'd go on a month long cruise and see all types of places. And my room would be a huge suite!

  • @MrsB627 I take my fasting upon waking.  I also have medicine to take first thing, so it's just part of my routine.

    How have your numbers been?

My fasting numbers are lower.  And I'm getting more frequent numbers in the fasting range 1 hr after eating.  One look at bread gives me terrible highs though.

Any tips you've learned along the way?

I'm extra sensitive in the AM.

    Questions or rants?

Still curious what everyone is doing for breakfast.  As one who hates breakfast for breakfast, I'm struggling here.

GTKY - If you had no obstacles stopping you, where would you vacation?

Right now, just the local beach is all I have energy for.  After having the babies, maybe Bermuda.  I've been wanting to go for a few years.

  • @JessK1014 I called my dr today and it's looking like meds. They couldn't get me in with the specialist until 8/15 but I have my OB Thursday so hopefully he can start something now.

I'm not much of a breakfast eater so I'll eat a protein bar and sometimes I'll add a nutrigrain bar to hit as close to my morning carbs as I can without spiking anything if I'm super hungry.

  • @MrsB627 I'm surprised I'm not on meds yet.  I was on insulin at 15 weeks with my first pregnancy.

It wasn't so bad from what I can remember.

I'll have to look for some more protein bars.
  • @JessK1014 The ovulation meds weren't working for me and the specialist put me on metformin because of my PCOS and I wound up getting pregnant after 3 weeks on it. I was on it for 10 weeks so I'm wondering if they will just put me back on that.

  • @MrsB627 I was on Metformin too as part of IVF protocol prescribed by my RE through week 12 for both pregnancies.  I also have PCOS.  I found the insulin to be less troublesome to my digestion than Metformin.  I still have morning sickness going into this third trimester, so if necessary, I'm going to ask for insulin instead.
  • How have your numbers been? They seem to be creeping up. I've been on Metformin for the past 2 months and I don't feel like it's making any difference. Of course I have nothing other than before I was on it to compare it to and my doc says the further along I am, the worse my numbers may get.

Any tips you've learned along the way?
Walking right after a meal really helps the numbers. I know it's hot out, but the other day I knew we'd be walking around the swap meet so I had an iced mocha from starbucks with breakfast and my numbers were still on track. I was amazed.

    Questions or rants?
Nothing new, just wanting all the sugar and carbs. We stopped by a friend's house this weekend and he made some fresh watermelon agua fresca, on the spot, for us and was so excited about it. I felt so bad having to turn it down!

GTKY - If you had no obstacles stopping you, where would you vacation?
NO obstacles? Around the world! Just stopping here and there as I please. If I had to choose one place, Thailand. We're waiting for the baby to be old enough to enjoy and appreciate a family trip to go there though.

  • How have your numbers been?
Not great, my insulin rates need to keep getting  increased every couple weeks but what's harder is the after-meal spikes...even with the right amount of insulin with meals it takes forever to kick in for some reason
Any tips you've learned along the way?
I guess I'm learning that a lot of work still isn't enough, need to head more towards a low-carb diet than just my "regular" type 1 management strategies
    Questions or rants?
What have most of you done diet-wise for quick & easy (work) breakfast and lunch ideas? Rant, I'm pretty frustrated because, in addition to the work that goes with managing type 1 anyway, pregnancy makes it super difficult to control and it's getting stressful bc I had my numbers under tight control until recently
GTKY - If you had no obstacles stopping you, where would you vacation?
I don't consider pregnancy an obstacle but, if there were no restrictions on anything, I think I would travel to the Caribbean or Europe
  • @JessK1014 My RE used metformin too to prepare for everything but we didn't get that far. I'm wondering if that's what I'll go back on.

@UponAStar16 I meant obstacles like money or time lol... I didn't think anything else! Sorry for the confusion!

  • How have your numbers been?
I don't know yet, I had my first midwife appointment today since I failed. She told me my numbers were only 2 points out of range, but they still want me to do all the finger pokes and diet. I'm down with the diet, no big deal. Finger pricks, not so much. She did say if the diet works then they'll lower it from 4 times a day to 2 times a day. I feel like it's no big deal since my original test was just outside of normal, but DH is freaking out.

Any tips you've learned along the way?
    Not yet.

    Questions or rants?
It's going to be a few weeks until I can get into the nutritionist, what have you ladies found to work the best? I'm not a sugar person, I'd rather have salt any day, but I eat a lot of fruit and carbs so I know that can elevate things.

GTKY - If you had no obstacles stopping you, where would you vacation?
I would love to go somewhere tropical and sit on the beach all day drinking Pina Coladas.
  • @nataliemaephotography Try to keep your total carb count between 45-60 for meals and 30-45 for snacks was what I was told. Sara Lee delightful bread is only 18 carbs I think for two slices and brown rice pasta isn't bad but it spikes for some people. I love fruit too so I eat it in moderation.

Side note - 9:40 at night and my sugar was 132 two hours after dinner (at 8:05) and I'm starving right now! I ate a protein bar but this is the first time I've ever been this hungry! Ahhh
    DS born 2016
  • @MrsB627 haha, I was just saying bc I feel slightly guilty considering it an obstacle but honestly if I wasn't pregnant I'd want to travel now!

YES at the Sara Lee bread! Also I don't remember the brand but there are tortillas that are so low carb it's amazing (I think bc the fiber is so high and you can subtract fiber from carb count), and they don't even taste different. About fruit, I know there are some that are much lower in sugar than others but I just can't remember from my dietician appt, Dr Google should know haha
  • @UponAStar16 Salads, even from fast food restaurants, usually work for me for lunch.  I'm loving the Cobb salad from Zaxby's right now (I'll eat 1/2 the first day & 1/2 the next day), and the BBQ Ranch half salad from Wendy's.  I don't have any great suggestions for breakfast.  I'm stuck there too.  I occasionally do a bowl of Special K Protein with Lactaid milk.  It seems to work ok for now.  I'm so not getting enough veggies in.  I stick to mostly protein with a more complex carb for most meals.

I'll have to look into that bread too @MrsB627.  I'm so missing bread right now.  It spikes me the worst of anything I've had lately.

  • Yum, I'm lucky bc this whole pregnancy (well, except when I had MS and no food looked good) I've been craving salads
  • @UponAStar16 I've been doing a lot of eggs which gets super boring, but I just look at it as a necessity rather than luxury of eating something delicious now. I look forward more to lunch.

I've found that I can have a pretty good size portion of quiche, so I've made a couple and they last me a few days. In the morning I just reheat a slice. You could also nix the crust and just make it a fritatta. It's all about the add in's for me... different meats, veggies and cheeses. Also, my market sells carne asada and pastor so I enjoy doing breakfast tacos or quesadillas on whole wheat tortillas. It sounds like it's a lot of work, but it all cooks up so fast, usually takes only about 5-10 min.

I've also found this flatbread that is pretty good called FlatOut Light... 1 flatbread has 9 grams of protein, 14 carbs and 8 gr of fiber. I'm thinking about making a flatbread pizza out of it for lunch.

  • @Julia70286 Do you have a go to recipe for the quiche?  That sounds wonderful to me right now, and easy enough to reheat on weekday mornings.

  • @jessk1014 Yeah! To make things easy I typically use the premade pie dough from the refrigerated section, but you can always make your own. Then my go-to ratio is - 3 eggs, 1 cup cream, 1 cup cheese of choice and whatever veggies and meat you like, I usually eyeball it, but I'd say maybe a quarter to half a cup of each filling. I like bacon (cook before adding to "batter"), green onions and cheddar jack or mozzarella. Or, sauteed spinach (or you can use frozen, make sure to wring out excess water) with garlic, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese. The thing I like about quiche is the options!  You can always sub ricotta cheese for cream too!

I find that the crust is best if you half bake it first, then add the "batter". If you have bacon or another raw meat, you want to cook it before adding it to the mix, but basically you just chop and throw the rest of the ingredients in a bowl, mix them up, season, pour into the crust and bake at about 350 for about 45 min, or until firm/light golden on top. I learned this from my mom, so I don't have a definite baking time or anything lol.

  • Yum, I'm going to make quiche soon! These bakery choc chip muffins and cheese Danishes are NOT helping my efforts >:)
  • So I'm back on Metformin 2x a day :/ My OB said I'll probably be induced at 38 weeks so that's the second week of September (I'm due 10/3) but I'm staying in the October board... I don't want to change now! But I'm still praying for a vaginal delivery and not having to get a c-section. He said we can induce and see how it goes but inducing is more than likely.
    DS born 2016
  • @MrsB627 I was induced with my first at 39 weeks.  I was on insulin prior.   I wound up with a c-section but DS was coming down crooked and sunny side up.  There was good potential for a vaginal birth without those issues.

Also,  my OB isn't letting me go past 37.5 weeks or so,  but that's because it's twins this time.   So I'll also be in September but sticking with this October board.
  • I couldn't get a GD specialist appt until 8/15 so that's why he started the metformin tonight but I'm just kinda trying to soak it in. I know things don't go as planned but besides the GD my kidney numbers haven't changed much so I honestly didn't think I would get induced.
