Stockpiling Diapers

STMs.. How many diapers did you end up using for each size (NB, 1, 2)?

I have begun buying large cases of diapers and have roughly 400 size 1s and 350 size 2s and over 2,000 wipes. I'm taping all receipts to the box in case I need to return them for a different brand. I figured I would get NB ones at the baby shower and maybe a few more size 1s. Is this enough to start off with? I'm also considering switching from pampers swaddlers to pampers cruisers for size 3s. What have you done? From your experience, am I on track?

Re: Stockpiling Diapers

  • I found that my kids were in 2s, 4s, and 5s for the longest periods of time.  So that's what we stocked up on.  None of my babies have been in NB very long, hardly at all in fact for my boys.  We stocked up at target last week (22 boxes of diapers), and bought a variety of sizes. Best to do what you're doing and keep receipts to exchange or return as needed.  Also, check the dates on your receipts because some expire. :)

  • I was going to stock pile but someone scared me with a good point - what if my baby is allergic to a certain brand? With so many different brands, how do you know which one will work best with your baby?

  • Amazon prime, Amazon subscribe & save.
  • I chose pampers swaddlers after doing some research. That's why I'm taping the receipt to them just in case there's a problem. And I'm only buying the jumbo boxes but figured I would get a small pack to start off with to make sure the brand will work.
  • Ya everyone told me Pampers Swaddlers are the best, so I considered stock piling those like I said just scared.

I would just make sure you hold on to receipts.
We had to jump from brand to brand trying to find something that would contain blow outs (which was Luvs only for a while). Pampers Swaddlers gave her diaper rash, while the Cruisers didn't. My daughter was also a super soaker, so we would size up at night typically. I found that Up&Up diapers were super bulky, and looked ridiculously full after only 1 pee. Same with Huggies. DD also never wore newborn size diapers (she was a chunker).
Every baby is going to react different and some diapers will work better than others. You'll find out when you start using them.
We arually had a diaper party and were able to
exchange diapers at Costco, Sams Club and such.

  • I don't think there's a hard and fast answer here. I had two friends who had babies around the same time and the diaper usage was actually vastly different. One would cry the moment there was any kind of moisture and the other was happy to wait until mom and dad changed him. They weren't extreme or anything... Neither baby has ever had diaper rash, actually. But my point is, I think it'll depend on how your baby responds to a damp diaper and how quickly they grow.

This helps put the how many into perspective however note babies grow at different rates so it's not 100% perfect for everyone. Whatever you do, keep your receipts and make sure you're buying from somewhere with a nice return policy. I prefer subscription services personally.

  • I have no idea. We were in newborn for a while and I only liked the pamper swaddles. The huggies had an obnoxious cut out for the umbilical cord and DS1 would pee out of them.

i think we moved through size 1 quicker... But I wouldn't really stockpile more than newborn and size 1... And some people don't use newborn for longer than 2 weeks. I just found that my guy would pee and instantly need a change so we definitely went through more.

Unless there is a sale I don't see the point in stockpiling. With Amazon and free shipping on most site and diapers being available at like every store- I don't see the need or have the space!
  • The only reason we stocked up is because target was having a big sale.. we got the 22 boxes for about $13.88/box.. so about half off.. :)
  • DD was in newborn into almost 3 months, 1's for a couple months, 2/3 until 1, and 4 now. I used Swaddlers for newborn stage and switched to Honest. Now we use pampers baby dry because I switched our Honest bundle to newborn for the twins.

  • Thankfully, DS was able to wear all the brands we had purchased and were given.  I did find that Pampers ran smaller than Huggies, so we'd start the new size in Pampers, switch to Huggies in the same size, and then back to Pampers in the next size up.  After he got into either 2s or 3s, it was Luvs all the way until it was time for potty training.  They were so much cheaper.  Then, we did Huggies pull ups at night for potty training.  We're almost through with those at night only.  And, now we're going to have to start buying diapers again!  :)
  • My kids grew out of different diaper sizes at different rates, so it's hard to answer that question.
As far as stockpiling, if you already know what diaper brand you'd prefer, definitely +1 for subscribe and save on Amazon.
If you going into this blind, I would suggest instead of stockpiling before LO is here, do a "diaper fund" or put money onto a gift card just for diapers. While you are still in the experimental "what brand, what size" phase once LO is born use that so you don't have to worry about the hassle of receipt keeping, returns, etc. After you find what works best for you, then you can put what funds you have to use on stockpiling :)
  • I have asked both my local babies r us and target about registering for diapers/ returning them.  They both said, even if you open them and your baby uses a few but has a bad reaction, they will take them back no problems!
  • Honestly I think putting money in a envelope instead is more efficient in some cases. I don't have enough room for several boxes of diapers so I will only buy one small box of new born and one box of size 1, and a box of wipes. Each of my kids needed different brands and I didn't feel like the hassle of returning newborn diapers if I had a 9lb baby that only wore them for a week. My second only wore newborn for 10 days cause she was big and long.

  • I'm not a STM, but the best way I've found to stock up is through Facebook resale sites. Moms are always looking to get rid of diapers they didn't use and usually list them at rock bottom prices. They sell like hot cakes! I write how much I paid for them on the box and if I don't use them, I'll sell them on the same site later.
