I have to agree w @Flowr4246 , my mom smoked while pregnant with me and my 2 brothers, we are fine. Now I dont want her to light one up w my baby in her arms but shes not that ignorant...she never smoked in the house w us or anything like that, so im not worried about her doing that with my baby. Imo its just a common sense thing. And if people cant resepct that then you should be real and tell them that you dont appreciate it, if you hold it in it is only going to make you stressed and crazy.
Awe man I was thinking of QFP because she loves to dirty delete. She basically wrote that she doesn't "buy" that third hand smoke can hurt a newborn.
Really? I guess we'll never know now.
@lissvarna it's pretty rude to DD. If you have an opinion stand behind it. Some may debate with you about it but there's nothing wrong with respectful discussion.

What she said. The comment basically said that letting a smoker hold a baby for five minutes can't hurt.
Putting aside the proven harmful effects of third hand smoke on babies, most of us here are talking about grandparents who won't be holding the baby for five minutes one time...

Cool. What exactly are you agreeing with? I'm pretty sure she never said her mom smoked while pregnant. Just because you were lucky enough to avoid any repercussions doesn't mean the risks don't exist.

I just agree with what she had to say. That simple. Then wrote an opinion. Excuse me if my comma through you off. And i think people DD so they dont get attacked by rude comments such as yours. Do you really have to get snarky if you dont agree with what i said. I was just sharing an experience. Sorry if you think its irrelavant, dont respond to it if you dont like it.

Sorry, but when someone implies that smoking while pregnant is NBD, then that warrants a response. I wasn't "attacking" you. You share your opinion, I share mine. It's called an adult discussion.

At the beginning of this post you're applying some of the same logic that my grandparents apply to car seats. Their kids survived, so what's the big deal? The answer is the same: we've discovered risks associated with behavior previously considered acceptable, and now we adapt what we do in order to mitigate those risks.
The issue I take with your statement is that it takes "common sense" for granted. TO YOU it is common sense not to smoke in the house with children. To a smoker in denial about the risks/consequences of smoking, this may not be so.
Im not a smoker, never have been, i dont think its a good idea to smoke while pregnant. I was just stating if people cant quit while pregnant or have family friends etc that smoke dont beat them down for it. Yes, no one wants to expose their child to smoke of any kind but getting crazy about people who smoke holding a baby thats like saying put your kid in a bubble so they dont breathe anything bad. Again, with all the edvidence we have we know smoke is terrible. But dont cut someone out just because they smoke. If you dont like a person in general and dont want them around your child guess what they dont have to be there but i feel the smoking thing was a crutch. Thats why i agreed w flowr. If you have someone in your life who smokes and you want them to be in your kids life tell them your feelings, good or bad. Its your kid you have the ultimate say. If that person doesnt respect your wishes then youll cross that bridge when you get there. All i was getting at.

Perfect example of the "I survived, so who cares?" Mentality. Just because you are the exception, doesn't make it justifiable that the vast majority of those who HAVE been effected should be ignored. And sorry, if anyone is smoking for extended periods or their whole pregnancy, I think that's pretty damn ignorant. It took a week after BFP for me to kick it, and I feel guilty every day even though I know the chances of it having any long term effects are slim to none.
Im sorry that was the first thing that came into my head. Ive been around smokers my entire life and during those days it wasnt a big deal because people didnt know how it could effect them. Obviously its different now. Im sure i could have worded it better but you know what oh well. If you read my next post youll see what i was getting at.
That's the thing : back then people didn't know the effects of smoking etc. heck, people smoked in restaurants, in airplanes and in the doctors office. I get their point of view to an extent, but now we know the long term effects of cigarette smoke and being exposed to second and third hand smoke so I think it's fair to question someone about it. My thing is my mom likely has never heard of third hand smoke. So it's also about education. I'm still going to read up on it and see how I want to approach it, but I think people should be understanding if there is sufficient evidence to prove that it can have negative effects on a baby.
While some may be "fine" as a result of secondhand smoke, plenty are not. But Our parents didn't know any better. We do, because science. The facts (FACTS, not anecdotal "I'm fine" stories) are that second and third hand smoke are harmful to people, babies in particular. Asthma. Allergies. SIDS risks.
When my my mom was a kid, she used to play with mercury because it was squishy and fun to play with. But guess what science taught us? That you can get Mercury poisoning. Guess what doesn't happen nowadays because we know better? Kids playing with mercury. But I mean, she never ended up with mercury poisoning, so it's probably not a big deal to let our kids do the same.
