TMI -- Symptom help, please

How do you handle hemorrhoids?  I've had them very mildly since DS1 was born, but never really needed treatment for them because they were only slightly bothersome.  However, this past week they've gotten a lot more painful and there's now blood every time I wipe.  Should I be worried about the blood?  How can I get relief?

I had some very bloody ones when pregnant with DS1 and my OB referred me to a specialist and recommended a stool softener.  I ended up cancelling the appointment with the "butt Doctor" because they got better on their own and completely went away by the end of the pregnancy.  I believe you can also use hemorrhoid cream while pregnant such as preparation H.
  • Prep h is good. Lots of fiber. Lots of water. Don't strain. Ice packs on your bum helps. I went through that a few weeks ago. Good luck

  • Oh girl, I feel you. I had them before I was pregnant, but they had all but disappeared... cue pregnancy. Here's what I'm using:
    - I take 12 mg of sennosides every evening. I've tried the natural senokot but it does nothing for me
    - I have a 2 gallon water bottle that gets filled twice a day, and I have marked on the side how much I should drink by a certain time, so I make sure I'm hydrated, has helped a ton
    - Anusol/Prep H cream for when they get super itchy
    - I use those cottonelle wet wipes, they almost have a cooling sensation which really helps, plus things just feel fresher down there
    - If they're really bad, I use my nursing pillow I bought (Boppy style) to take the pressure off one cheek. It's great.
    Hope this helps!

  • i just recently started getting the roids myself...at 32 weeks... thought i was gonna miss that awesome pregnancy symptom. noooppeee.

witch hazel pads, prep h, and i started taking a calcium-magnesium supplement. i drink tons of water as it is so no issue there. i read using benefiber could help. and light exercise. hope you feel better soon, it sucks!
  • I got some suppositories from my doc that seem to help, not sure they're chemically different than Prep H/ Anusol. I would echo everyone else that says drink a ton of water. I'm doing iron supplements for anemia right now which seems like it just makes everything a little worse, so I have a lot of sympathy for your situation. Good luck!
  • Colace.
And withc hazel pads.  You can freeze them and just leave them in your underwear if they're really bad.

  • Also dealing with this - here's what I use

-Colace only when I need it, but I take it for 3 nights in a row (otherwise it's not effective for me)

    -cottonelle wet wipes

    -tucks pads

    -generic prep h cream

    - regular bikini underwear, no thongs

I didn't know that Tums can cause constipation!!! I was chowing down on them regularly a few weeks ago, and got scary constipated and majorly aggravated a hemi. To get rid of it, every night for a week I used tucks pads, then cream, then another tucks pad which I left in and wore bikini undies to sleep. This for about 5 days did the trick.

When I use the cream irregularly, it doesn't work well, but I get major relief if I use it consistently. They are not going to disappear, but cream for a week gives me less inflammation and no symptoms like itching or burning. Good luck!

  • Thanks!  I bought some cream today and am already feeling some better.
  • Prep H didn't work for me at all, so I read around on the internet and found out that a lot of people use diaper rash cream.  I tried my son's Honest Diaper Cream and it works great!  I also use wet wipes every time I have a number 2, and just wear grannies until I'm all through the postpartum phase.
