Not feeling anything :(

I am 19+3 with my first and I haven't felt any movement yet. What I do think is movement turns out to be gas. Just a little concerned and worried. Is this normal? Should I be concerned?

Re: Not feeling anything :(

  • Do you know if you have an anterior placenta? That means that the placenta is between you and LO on the belly button side. Which means that the area where you would feel LO has more padding, causing you to not feel LO until later.

Having an AP isn't anything to worry about, but If you don't have one then I would call your OB.

  • Ditto what @Kate08Young said. I have an AP and don't feel much of anything, and when I do it's on the sides of my belly. I generally only feel that when laying down, sometimes sitting down but never standing or walking. My OB said after 25 weeks I should be feeling movement more regularly even with an AP.

  • I have only had one ultrasound so far and have my second for anatomy screening next week. They didn't mention anything about by placenta during the first ultrasound so I will ask them next week. So that may be why I haven't felt anything. I see my OB on Wednesday so I will bring it up. Just seeing all of these posts about feeling the baby move and I am wanting to feel too! Lol
  • I was just at my doctor at 18 weeks and she said not feeling movement yet is normal. She did say it's very common to mistake gas for baby moving as well. Turns out I have an anterior placenta, which means it will take that much longer to feel anything. Could be your case as well. She told me that at about 20-22 weeks I might start to feel something, but still nothing strong or consistent for a few more weeks. I swear I've felt some flutters/tickles, but my doctor really doesn't think I would have by now. Maybe it is just gas. Either way, totally normal to not feel anything yet!
  • PS: she also did a quick ultrasound just to ease my worries, and baby was moving a ton and I felt nothing.
  • When do they usually tell you where your placenta is placed?

  • I have an AP too so I only feel him on the sides and won't all over until 24-25 weeks (19 now). Could easily be your reason! :)

@kaitmb88 your placenta doesn't finish forming fully until beginning of the 2nd trimester. If you had a 1st trimester U/S they probably didn't even see it as placenta doesn't begin forming until week 8/9.

  • @karabearrr I have never been told where my placenta was. But as far as I know I haven't had a anterior placenta or anything else that would be worth mentioning.

  • It is totally normal. I have 8 nieces, 2 nephews and a son and they all started kicking at different times. My sister-in-law has 4 and she said some were just lazy babies:) With my first I had an AP, but I also had 3.5 pounds of skin removed about a decade ago with a lot of scar tissue left behind so I wasn't expecting to feel much of anything anyway. This one I haven't felt anything yet(18 weeks today), and we'll see if I have another AP at the 20 week ultrasound.
I know it sucks not to feel anything. I can totally empathize there. Hopefully your little one will start jumping up and down, and hiccuping soon:)
  • I am 20 weeks today and I have an AP and I just started to feel her move last week! I had my monthly checkup today and on the doppler we couldnt get her heart beat for a good minute because she was moving so much! My doctor was like "You don't feel any of that?!" and I couldn't! All you heard was swishing noises and then finally her heartbeat came in loud and clear at 155bpm. I asked when I would be feeling her more and he said probably around week 24...maybe earlier maybe later.

I wouldn't be concerned. Even if you don't have an anterior placenta, it is normal (especially for FTMs) not to feel fetal movement until up to the 25th week. If you are really freaked out, you could call your doc for reassurance, but I don't think you should be freaked out.

  • I've not been told that I have an AP, but I had an US at 16 weeks and baby was kicking and squirming and I couldn't feel him then. 18 weeks now, I've had some flutter-like feelings but I have a US next week so hopefully I can watch that and see if I'm actually feeling him. I do get worried at not being able to really feel him kick, but I've also read that for first time moms it's common not to feel baby until 20 weeks.
  • Totally normal!! With my first, I felt something at 18 weeks, then once at 19 weeks. Then at my ultrasound at 20 weeks, when I was able to see him moving around I was like ohhhh, yessssss, I DO feel that. :)
  • Don't worry, we are all different and the time for feeling kicks varies a LOT. And I'm sure your LO will make up for it later, having dance parties in utero at 2 am. I feel this baby (my 3rd) less than I felt my other two, but I started out 20 lbs heavier than I was with the other 2.

  • I was JUST thinking the same thing (one day short of 20 weeks) and went on to this message board for the first time to see if I could get any answers, and Voila! Thanks y'all! I have my 20 week US today so we shall see...feeling a bit nervous. You never know what they're going to find, since I don't feel anything, you know?
  • I thought I had been feeling movement for weeks, like since 14 weeks. When I saw my Dr at 16 weeks, she told me I probably am, and that my placenta is towards by back, plus twins...so it's likely that I am feeling movement. Everyone is different though. And some days I feel them a lot, and others I don't feel them at all.

  • I had what I thought was a good hard kick this morning. I had my hand on my belly and baby kicked my hand. I wasn't ready to call it though because FI wasn't here to corroborate so I thought maybe I had imagined it. Well tonight I was laying on my side and baby just started kicking away! I had FI feel to see if I was imagining it but he could feel them too. I'm a FTM and 19 weeks. I guess I just needed a second opinion this whole time. :)
  • @PensiveCrayon  Yes! That's what I started feeling yesterday, a kind of rolling sensation.  Definitely a feeling I've never had before, so I'm thinking it could be baby but I'm not entirely sure.
  • @PensiveCrayon yes! That's exactly what I feel.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @PensiveCrayon that is the best explanation for the feeling! I have not been able to explain it well to people, so thanks! Haha
  • I got my Wusic in the mail today! Slapped some aloe Vera on my tummy and listened to baby's heartbeat for a minute. Very comforting since I don't feel much yet. <3
  • @dmontgo I wish I could do that -_- since I have two, and you can't always differentiate between the two hearts beats, there's no point. And I'd freak myself out if I thought I couldn't find two lol.

  • @brittnic86 They sure get sassy when you try to get the heartbeat! I think I woke baby up because it was not happy and it sounded like it kicked or punched the Wusic.

I wasn't going to get it, but it was a Prime deal and I couldn't resist!
  • @dmontgo: I almost ordered that on Wednesday too, but DH has told me repeatedly that he doesn't trust me with a Doppler. I have pretty bad anxiety and he is worried I'll over use it... and he is probably right.
    EQD born 12/15!

  • @jptrumptone I know what you mean. I got it for my anxiety, too. I promised myself I wouldn't use it everyday, and no longer than 2 minutes at a time.

You know what's so funny though? I just felt baby kick! I got the doppler because I was anxious I hadn't felt baby move, and I guess it's pissed at me because it feels like baby is tap dancing on my right side. Kind of uncomfortable, actually. Life is funny that way I guess lol.
  • @dmontgo Baby is on my left side, and I know a lot of people recommend laying on the left side for increased blood flow, but he absolutely hates when I do it! He starts kicking and wiggling so much that it actually feels like a cramp. It's so funny how their little personalities start showing through in utero, FI has certainly gotten a kick out of it. :)
  • @ashleaf2018 I'm glad you said it feels like a cramp, but as of right now the movement does not feel comfortable lol.
  • I'm glad to hear many of you describe it as a crampy sensation. Because that's just what I feel and it was starting to make me worry.  Whew!
@ashleaf2018 mine is on my left too! Right-side sleeping is more comfortable and gosh I hope it's okay....

  • Glad you posted this! I felt a strong rolling sensation around 14 weeks, only lying down, and some weird sensations at work when I leaned too far forward in my chair, sort of squishing my lower abdomen. But then, just patterned cramping and pressure in my very lower panty line area to the sides. My doc asked if I had felt any baby movement and when I told her about these sensations at 14 weeks she told me it was too early; then at 18 weeks she told me it was prob just round ligament pain, so now I don't know what to think because I'm 20 weeks tomorrow and this is the only sensation I've had. I've determined I should either be worried, because no one has mentioned an anterior placenta to me and I've had like 4 us already, or, that my doc is full of crap and I've been feeling my baby. I think I'm going to go with she's full of crap. I hope you feel your baby soon! I can't wait till I know it's actually the baby.

Either way, I don't think you should be worried. I saw my doc today, and she said 20-22 weeks is the most common time to start feeling movement. I'm sure you'll feel it any day now if you haven't already.

  • Anyway all it has been confirmed that I do have an anterior placenta. It makes sense since I still havent felt much of anything and I am 21+3. Excited for when I will actually get to feel undeniable movement! ❤
