Anyone else have a second appointment with Perinatologist?

I have my second appointment with the perinatologist this week. I don't remember having 2 appointments with my first pregnancy a little over 2 years ago. I already had the anatomy scan (all healthy and normal), and I just got the notification about my second appointment that I have later this week. I just left a message with my OB to find out if it's absolutely necessary that I go. The pregnancy is going very well, baby girl looks very healthy. Perhaps it's my age? I'm 32 and will be 34 weeks on Friday. Not sure, they couldn't give me an answer at the perinatologist for the reason of second visit, just "we want to take a look again", ummmm ok. Anyone else doing a second visit?

Why did you see one to begin with? Ive seen the perinatologist twice now because they were checking on baby's kidneys as he had pyelectasis at the anatomy scan and needed a follow up look. I thought you only see a perinatologist if you are high risk or baby has something going on?

@squishy0511 I had to go see one to do my anatomy scan at the 20 week mark. I remember with my first pregnancy that was it, I never went back, but for some reason they want me to come back again at 34 weeks and can't give an answer other then "we just want to take a look" when I ask why.

  • @Ceventa hmmm I would ask your ob then! (If you don't want to go). I was sent to them for the pyelectasis and at my 2nd follow up they then said they wanted to see me weekly for BPPs because of my hypothyroid. I thought it was weird because my thyroid has been fine and I wasn't even referred to them for that, and baby looks great. So I asked my OB and he said it wasn't necessary at all. I kinda wonder if they add unnecessary appts!

Sounds like you see the perinatologist for your scans. At 34 weeks, if I were to speculate I would guess you are getting a growth scan, but frankly there is no way for us to know. Frustrating as it is you just have to push your OB for a more specific answer. You are certainly entitled to know, it is that informed part of informed consent ;) they are the only ones who can tell you.

Interesting..having a maternal age of 32 should not make you high risk. I only went to perinatology as a referral to further investigate a velamentous cord insertion. My OB office did my initial anatomy scan and only sent me to perinatology for a concern. I followed up with them again four weeks later to make sure that the baby's growth was on track. Maybe your OB wants you to go back to follow-up on something that they would in office if they had the technology? Maybe a growth check? I would hope that they would keep you in the loop if there was a concern or issue. If they aren't, that's an ethical issue.
  • I have seen the Perinatologist three times already, and will see her again next week.  I am considered high risk because at almost 36, I'm AMA. I also have gestational diabetes,  so I go see her for ultrasounds etc to keep an eye on baby. We go back next week for a follow-up to check on his long bones and make sure he's continuing to grow.

I just spoke to my OB, she said that I should keep the appointment. When I asked her specifically what it was for she told me it was simply a growth check and she encouraged me to go. So I guess I'm going! I just thought it was odd to require me to go back when I'm not having any complications since I didn't have to do it with my first. Maybe it's a new policy of care, oh well. Thanks for the feedback ladies!
