Formula feeding question

edited July 2016 in June 2016 Moms
my baby will be 1 month tomorrow and my milk never came in so we had to switch to formula she is on similac and eating 5 ounces every 3-4 hours. She's not spitting up a lot.. Is she eating too much? When I feed her 4 ounces now she is still hungry. This just started today maybe she hit a growth spurt?

Edited to add she is really gassy but has been that way since starting formula.

Re: Formula feeding question

  • My son is almost a month old and he eats 4 ounces every couple of hours. But there are times that he drinks 4oz and an hour later is hungry so we make him 2oz.  As for being gassy, maybe it's the formula you're using?
  • That's what I thought maybe but besides gas she does really well on similac and isn't fussy when she's gassy. I'm afraid I'll switch her and cause her to have an upset tummy.

  • If you look on the breastfeeding support thread most of our babies are gassy as well. If everything else seems to be going well with that formula I don't think I'd switch. Babies digestive systems are still maturing and gas tends to get better around 3 months it's just part of the newborn thing.

@Jerseygirl9090 are you shaking your bottles or stirring them? Idk If you have noticed but in my quest to find the right formula for my picky man I have noticed that similac is way more foamy than any others we tried. My dude likes the sensitive the best and was also super gassy so I started mixing in a cup and stirring. While he is still somewhat gassy it is definitely way less!! Maybe try that if you haven't already?

also my dude is 4-6 oz every two hours. Sometimes he sleeps longer but it's been rare. Pretty sure he is hitting a growth spurt and along with it is no sleep! Yayy!!! Lol

  • Yeah everywhere I read said its just a newborn thing but  I do shake her bottles so I'll try stirring them and see if it helps thanks for the advice! Wow every 2 hours lol she usually eats every 3 3.5 usually overnight its every 4.

  • @Jerseygirl9090 you'll have to let me know if it makes a difference for you guys. He used to be every 3/4 but like I said i think he's in a growth spurt cause this last week has been hell!! He's lucky he's cute ;)

  • It didn't really work she's still super gassy and get the formula all over when she eats I'm wondering if it's because the flows too fast i use Avent bottles but am thinking about switching her

  • @Jerseygirl9090 we use the playtex with drop ins so we can squeeze out any extra air
