Re: Quick Questions - July

  • @MrsVoorhees it's weird right??
We are really trying to go for as least interventions and meds as possible so when they said that absolutely everyone gets it my FI and I were really put off.
plus it was the 1st I've heard of it.

So i just learned that everyone at my hospital gets pitocin after they give birth. No matter what.

Is this standard everywhere or just here?

This is becoming the new standard as it helps mom's uterus contract and helps prevent postpartum hemorrhage. At our facility, we start Pitocin (if mom wasn't already on it) as soon as the anterior shoulder is delivered. It doesn't give you super strong contractions like it would before delivery though.
  • It's to help with postpartum hemorrhage.  It's not a lot.  You can refuse if you want but for me, at that point, baby's out and if I've made it that far without intervention I don't care if they load me up with pit to help me get home sooner!
  • @AnnaS930 I'm not going to be bummed if I end up not making anything. We have a great local donut place and I thought of maybe just buying a couple dozen donuts from them if I don't do goody bags. I originally thought cookies but I am definitely not going to start baking when contractions start.

  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom Ooh, I hadn't thought about cookies. I think some now and freeze them. That way, all we have to do is toss them into the hospital bag and they'll be all thawed and ready to go when LO arrives!

  • My Hypnobirthing teacher gave me a suggestion of baking a birthday cake once contractions first start (if I'm already rested) to keep my mind busy. I think it's such a cute idea to bake a birthday cake for my baby on his/her day of birth!

Maybe you could do that and bring it in for the nurses! I will be birthing at home so I'm not sure if I'll end up baking the cake (I'll have the ingredients around if I do feel like it), but I could definitely imagine the smell of the baked cake lingering could make me feel really nauseous once transition hits...who knows!
  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom  I had planned on bringing/getting something for the nurses with my first, and it didn't happen. I doubt that it will this time either. My hospital is big, and we saw a lot of different nurses. I do regret not sending a thank you card to the nurse that helped deliver DD and the one that was seeing us when she was diagnosed with jaundice. All of the nurses were helpful, but those two made a big difference for the good in biggest times of need.

@Megan324 I didn't know they did Pit after birth until they were hooking it up to my IV. FWIW, I had blown my IV during delivery (it had been moved to the back of my hand after a bad placement on the side of my wrist resulted in a gaint lump when antibiotics started being administered). Because it blew, the Pit didn't go through, and I never received it. No one was really all that concerned, and I healed fine. So if you really don't want it, I'd say decline it.

  • @Jabreen I honestly hadn't considered freezing them! I think you just figured this out for me, thanks! It'll be so much easier to do them early and freeze them than run around trying to figure out what to get.

You know, now that you mention it, they may have given me some at the end and I just didn't know about it. I had pitocin in labor because the epidural relaxed me too much and my contractions stopped being productive. They may have turned it on for a bit at the end?

Also, same with the blown out vein! They tried my wrist/forearmish area and blew it out so I had my IV in my hand.
  • @AlwaysAuntNeverMom Glad I could help! You may have already thought of this, but I usually wrap each cookie separately in saran wrap, then dump them all in a huge Ziploc bag. Easy thawing, and later, nobody had to take a cookie that's been touched by who knows how many people digging in the bag!

  • @frogdog06 Definitely keep a ziplock or two in the diaper bag for blow outs.  I also always kept a small receiving blanket in case it was cold, the baby needed to be covered, nursing, or baby completely ruined both outfits and I needed to cover her with something.  If you are BFing keep some nursing pads in the bag and a sanitary pads or tampons because you never know when your PP AF will show up.
We also kept an extra paci, a bottle of water for me and yes a simple back up dress or something that you keep in the car for blow outs is a great idea.  I also kept 2 extra diapers and some wipes in my car as well.  There may be a day that you leave and completely forget the diaper bag.

    what @AMT1107 said.

I remember talking about gifts for the nurses several months ago and I think we had several nurses who chimed in saying that while homemade snacks are nice they usually end up getting tossed because there is no way of knowing if they were prepared in a sanitary home, what ingredients were used especially with those who may be allergic, etc.  Some moms suggested picking up donuts, bagels, or ordering pizza.  Another mom wanted to be able to give something to the nurses who helped her during labor, delivery, and postpartum so she was packing several individually wrapped Dove chocolate bars.  Having the gifts on hand ready to hand out at the end of their shift would help ensure that they didn't miss out on a food delivery because they weren't working at that time.

  • @AMT1107 OMG, Cheryl's cookies!  Can I have some?

Their iced sugar cookies are the best cookies ever.  I grew up eating them and now only get them once in a blue moon since we moved from Ohio to Illinois and have to mail order them now.

  • I made a million desserts and froze them during my last pregnancy... but I did not share with nurses. lol. I'm huge into Christmas baking, so I did all of it in November and was still able to have cookies and chocolates during the holidays right outta my freezer.

My birthing class also suggested making a box of brownies during early labor at home. If you could follow the directions on the box, you didn't need to head into the hospital just yet.  I had a box of brownies but when the time came (although it was 10 days past my due date) I really didn't think it was the real thing and headed right in expecting to be told it was a false alarm... but got admitted.  Hoping to stay home a bit this time, maybe make some brownies and bring them with me! lol

  • I'm loving all the ideas for the hospital staff gifts! I was thinking of just getting granola bars/snacks/etc from Trader Joes and putting it all in a basket. Too boring? Too half assed?

Really good idea! Grab and go seems ideal for a medical staff.

  • I support the grab N go! I don't eat homemade goods from patients or families.  You never know what's in them, how clean the house is, it.  Plus other staff can have grubby hands.  Even going to Sam's and buying a think of mixed Oreos/chips ahoy, etc.  We all get excited when there's a fresh fruit basket.  For reals.  Bananas and apples.  Throw in some Otis Spunkmeyer muffins and you're good to go.
  • I like the fruit basket option above. It's tough for my RN husband when he's trying to watch what he eats and there's always treats at work. Of course it's lovely that people want to thank him and his coworkers. I just tried to ask him a good alternative, but he's sleeping in :)
  • I know I'm late but I feel so strongly about strollers that I have to add my opinion.

We bought the fast action click connect jogger travel system. I don't jog but the maneuverability is awesome. I didn't realize how essential it was until we got the sit to stand double stroller. It is compatible with the instant seat we already have but two double wheels unstead of the single jogger wheel. It is so hard to turn. I plan on using it as long as Ds2 is in the infant seat and then moving on to the BOB.

Because the BOB is so expensive, we got a used one at play it again. It's an old model so it's not compatible with the click connect infant seat or else we'd skip the sit to stand.

Re: infant seat. You must have one and must use a travel system. Infants sleep so frequently that it's so much better to transfer them undisturbed.

Question regarding labor (but somehow it feels more appropriate here than in the labor thread since it's a quick question...) Is anyone looking into using aromatherapy to cope with labor pains and if so what essential oils are you planning on trying/ should I look into in advance? I have lavender, but that's about it.
  • @PoodleDoodleOoo I am! We have lavender as well. I am sticking to one scent the whole time so I can't help you with other scents.

  • @PoodleDoodleOoo I'm a lavender girl. Going to try rose and jasmine too, ahead of time to make sure they relax me the same way lavender does.

  • Also, does anyone have any essential oil brands they love and recommend? I have young living for the lavender (also I have lemon, but not planning on using that for labor...) and I like them just fine, but I'm curious what other essential oil fans out there love to use.
  • For those planning on using essential oils - how are they used?  Burned?  Rubbed on your body?  I hadn't considered using any but now I'm intrigued...

I get all of mine from Plant Therapy. They have blends as well that are already mixed with oil and come in a roll on so easier to use.

There are many ways to use them. You can rub them on various pressure points but you need to dilute them with a carrier oil. (But see above, you can buy them already diluted.) You can also diffuse them. I use them in cleaning products (obviously totally unrelated). With the calming ones like lavender, I just sprinkle the oil on my pillow when I can't sleep. I'm out right now and so sad.

  • @PoodleDoodleOoo During my Hypnobirthing classes, the teacher always had essential oils going in the oil diffuser...I purchased one for my home birth. She used Doterra (sp?), but I just picked a brand off of Amazon for around $15. It's a pack of about 8 oils. I'm not concerned about the brand name because I don't think I'll be putting it on my body during labor, but the brand name was highly rated on Amazon (sorry, I forget the brand). Anyway, my Hypnobirthing teacher typically had Lavender and a touch of Orange going in the diffuser and I really liked it. I really think it's more about personal preference...test some combos out before labor!
  • I used lavender my last labor, and plan to bring it again. I'm not sure how much it relaxed me, but it was pleasant to smell it throughout the room.

@JennM205 I just put the oil on some cotton balls and left them sitting out in the room.

  • I might use some just to make the room feel more homey.  My doula is a Doretta rep so I could ask her.  Alot of people use lavender but some use other oils. Love lavender, but honestly I also LOVE going into Aveda, what is their stuff, Rosemary and Sage? Might do a mix of those!!
  • I, too, plan on just putting a few drops on cotton balls or cloth and taking a good whiff when I need/want it. I know some will put it in a lotion/carrier oil for massage, but I don't want to put it on my skin only to discover that a certain oil is more irritating than helpful during labor, and I don't want to diffuse it for the same reason - if I want something more invigorating or refreshing as opposed to refreshing after awhile, I can easily toss the old cotton ball and for a new one with a new scent without having it all overly blended/clashing in the air.

I'll look into plant therapy, @PSUBecky23!
  • I have Doterra oils but I love Bath and Body Works's Eucalyptus and Mind so I'm running an air freshener of that!

Cloth diapering newbie over here. Our friends mom made us 12 of these all in one type diapers, and gave us 7 Bummis covers that we will put over those diapers (they don't have a place to stuff so will be best used over those diapers). Then we just picked up 15 of these bumgenius covers (yellow) at goodwill for $40! So what is the best thing to get for the stuffable bumgenius covers? Pre folds? And I am thinking we are set right? If we get enough to stuff the bumgenius covers then we'll have 27 diapers total so I think that is doable for laundry every 2 days?

@lovelylauren86 that seems pretty quick but it's summer and hot almost everywhere so hopefully that's all it is. I would call so they can let you know if it's worth checking out or if it's something to just monitor at home. Better to be safe
