Things have changed so much in the past 25 years. And the fact that vaccines have never been tested is false. Go to clinicaltrials.gov and search on vaccines. There are many double blind (because no one does single blind studies for actual FDA submissions), placebo controlled studies. Every single drug on the market does Adverse Event reporting post approval. Have an AE to Tylenol? J&J wants to know. There is nothing sinister about having a vaccine AE reporting site.
We are absolutely pro vaccination. H is in the medical field and it's not even a question. I won't get into debates about stance, but know that if you are anti vaccine you sure as shit won't be hanging out with my kid.

I never said vaccines weren't tested. Not sure where that came from. Yes things have changed in 25 years but at that time they told parents the vaccines they were giving were safe. In 25 years they will have something else and say that its better than what they used in 2016. The guilt my sister in law feels is immeasurable. She absolutely believed she was doing what was best for her son. I am fully aware that injuries are rare, I just don't agree when someone implies they don't happen except for cases of allergic reaction. There is alot more to it than that. Dr.'s don't tell you that. Its the parents responsibility to do their own research. I wouldn't vaccinate or not vaccinate based on stories, opinions ad heresay in a social media forum. I just hope OP will do her own thorough research. I am not anti vaccine. I also had a grandfather who contracted polio when my father was 2 and it was only vaccine and quarantine that saved he and my grandmother from also contracting the illness. I don't deny there are benefits. I just want people to understand there are risks as well and depending on the vaccine sometimes the risks don't outweigh the benefits and over vaccinating is far more risky than taking the extra effort to titer to determine if your child NEEDS a vaccine/booster. Its a decision every parent needs to make on their own.
After my daughters reaction the Dr was fairly certain it was the mmr vaccine that caused it and it was like a much less intense version of measles (he called it "measles lite"). It was very scary for a week or two. If it was a less serious case of measles I would hate to see what full-blown measles would be like! I will continue to vaccinate but understand people who have personally experienced an injury not choosing to do so. My uncle got guillain-barre from a flu shot and 7 years later he still is in pain. After speaking to 4 different doctors they all said there is no evidence it could be hereditary but they all encouraged me to not get one to play it safe. My daughter has received the flu shot each year since the flu is so dangerous for young children but eventually I will stop giving it to her as well.
There is not one double-blind, placebo-controlled study that can prove the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. Much less one study showing how the combinations under the current schedule effect one another.
Although I can understand hesitation when you've been exposed to an AE, and particularly when a sibling or parent has had an AE, I find the personal choice argument troubling. So many children have no choice but to rely on herd immunity, including those with prior AEs and allergies to key vaccine ingredients, those for whom vaccines don't provide full immunity, and the immunocompromised. No, no vaccine or medical treatment should be mandated by the government. That's a slippery slope. But I do think the municipalities should be well within their rights to say that if your kid isn't vaccinated, you'll need to homeschool. It's the only way to provide protection for kids with true medical exemptions.
This is not directed at you, @thehappyphotog. I wouldn't be surprised if your child's experience qualifies as a medical exemption for future siblings, depending on its cause. Then again, not a medical professional.
Its not a personal choice, it's a public health issue. Because each person who decides not to vaccinate their children (not including those who have medical reasons and can't receive them), it decreases herd immunity that helps increase protection for everyone.
This is where I'll bow out because arguing herd immunity with a Libertarian is futile. I genuinely hope none of you have to experience the heartache of watching your child injured by a vaccine and hope everyone stays happy and healthy. Also, hats off to everyone who participated in this discussion. It stayed respectful and peaceful which is always most productive. Lastly to the OP, talk to your doctor and ask questions. Ask what vaccines they use (manufacturer, combination vs individual etc, live virus, preservative free vaccine options), ask about varying schedules, ask for or print a copy of each vaccine insert off the internet, ask about risks for your child based on your lifestyle and family medical history. Just don't be afraid to ask.

@SSCmomma I understand that VAERS exists to report adverse effects of vaccines, which is super important. There are rare side effects for ANY vaccine or medication. We have all seen drug commercials with their long list of possible side effects. It doesn't mean most people are at serious risk. The vast majority of the reports on VAERS are mild reactions like fevers, etc. I didn't go into much detail in my early post, but you are right, allergies are not the only adverse reactions. There is a very small percentage of people who medically cannot have certain vaccines because of various things, such as those who are immunocompromised, or who have certain other medical conditions that your physician will tell you about. I am so sorry to hear about your nephew, and obviously I do not know about his individual case with the CDC and the "hot lot" he may have received. However, my opinion still stands that unless you have an actual medical reason from your doctor not to vaccinate, immunizations are highly safe and should be given on schedule. I should also note that I have a biased, but informed, opinion since much of my family is in the medical field: dad, husband, uncle, brother, cousin, and I'm around doctors and researchers all the time because of that who have rubbed off on me.

100% agree with this.
This is us too.
So do you ask everyone you know if their kids are vaccinated? Do your kids go to preschools where records are required. Just genuinely curious. My daughter's school doesn't require any documentation for preschool.

We go to a school where the documents are required and are pretty vocal about it. Like asking people if they keep guns in the house where I won't be watching my kid like a hawk.
We we have one group of friends that are anti vax homeschooled kids and we didn't let them around my son until he had his full set and we don't spend much time with them at all because they're weird as fuck

Gotcha. I have a close playgroup of like 20 moms we hang out with almost daily and while vaccines have come up in passing (so-and-so has a check up and boosters tomorrow) I've never actually confirmed with any of them that all the children are fully vaccinated. I said the same thing about not letting my daughter hang out with unvaccinated kids when she was a newborn but now I've never even thought to ask.

Our daycare also requires kids to follow the normal vaccination schedule. So I know we are covered there. The only other kids she plays with are family and close friends, and I know they all vaccinate their kids on the normal schedule.
I know one family who chooses not to vaccinate and we have been very honest with them to let them know that until our daughter has received all of her vaccinations and is protected from the viruses her children could expose our daughter to as a result of their decision, that we cannot do play dates with them.
Re: Documentation for daycare - ours does not require but does keep track. We had a measles outbreak in our area before DS was 1yo and we talked to our daycare director about it. She said there was one kid who was much older not vaxing. Apparently in our state does not allow daycares to not accept on the basis of vaccine status.
I appreciate everyone's input. I'm going to do a lot of research. Myself and my sisters were all vaccinated with no probs but I do know some people with vaccination injuries. It's scary. There are a lot more vaccinations right now than ever before on the schedule. I am all for preventing the diseases and herd immunity is important but seeing as my child won't be in daycare for the foreseeable future I am thinking spacing them out may work best to ease this mamas mind. I'm keeping an open mind however and will be talking to the pediatrician more before deciding. Thank you all for so much info this post has been extremely informative.

Note that while the NVIC claims to be an independent information source, the organization was founded by anti-vaccine activists who continue to engage in anti-vaccination advocacy and policy work. You can view the full bio of the co-founder/president, Barbara Loe Fisher, here. She has published multiple books that specifically link vaccines to autism and other adverse health affects.
This background doesn't make everything the NVIC says automatically inaccurate, of course, but I think it's worth considering how this perspective might influence the kind of information they choose to publish, and the information they choose to omit.

We vaccinate on a delayed but accurate schedule to the full requirements of NYS. Gwen is fully vaccinated but I do one shot per visit. It did require a few more trips her first 6 months but worked well for us.
I waived on the Hep B at the hospital until my daughters second doctors appointment (aprox. 3 weeks) We do the Vitamin K and the eye creme though right at birth!
Team vaccinate here and just want to point out it is not a personal decision to choose not to vaccinate unless u never, ever leave your house. You put people who are too young or have real medical conditions that make it so they cannot vaccinate at risk. I read an article from a dad pleading for people to vaccinate because his daughter was sick, I think with some sort of cancer and saying you put my child life at risk. So again your descion effects other people's lives not just your families.
It's also dangerous to be around immune compromised, the young and old if you were recently vaccinated with a live virus vaccine as they shed. Just something to be mindful of.
