Late to the game, sleep training

We just recently started sleep training. We let him cry/whine/fuss for ten minutes and go check on him and calm him without picking him up. After calming him we make sure he is laying down and we walk back out. Within the next 10-15 minutes he is asleep. We do this for naps and bed time. We finally are getting good naps in when we are home to do naps! I know this is awesome or just starting this after nursing to sleep every single nap and bedtime since birth, but I am curious how long it took for you ladies to have your babies not cry when laying them down? I'm sure it'll come I'm just curious

Re: Late to the game, sleep training

  • We did CIO without going back in and she cried/whined total 10 mins the first day, 20 mins the second day, 5 mins the third day. From then on she whined here and there often but like 2-10 mins depending on her mood/temperament that day and slept anywhere from 9-11 hours straight at night. Once we did sleep training she was always in a great - playful mood during the day, I think because she was getting more sound sleep and not needing us to come in to put her sleep when she awoke at night. I had the video monitor next to me the whole time.  Now she's 9 months and we put her down awake and she plays for 20-30 mins in her crib before she puts herself to sleep. No crying ( maybe some whining From being tired but no hard cry)

  • My guy doesn't cry when we put him down at night. I think he just knows the day is over and it's time for sleep. He whined 20 mins the first night (at 6.5 months when we started) and solid cried for 5 mins. The second night it was whine/cry for 10-15. The third night I don't think he even cried. Our sleep training was basically just taking away his soother.

Naps are are a whole different monster. He went down without a peep for naps from 6.5-7 months. Then became insane and would scream for 40 mins+. I came to realize that I was putting him down too early. Naps are still hit or miss at 9 months.

  • Thank you ladies! We have had three nights now of crying for about 10 minutes. A few minutes of that is his "I want out come get me" scream that he has in the mornings as well but the rest is more of a whine. Yesterday we were home for all naps and instead of fighting him to fall asleep and then scream when I lay him down I just put him in his bed after he nurses and gives all his signs and within five minutes he's out for naps. He had three 40 minute naps yesterday! He's never slept that well during the day! We've had a consistent 9-12 hour sleeps at night the last three nights as well. I'm hoping he realizes he doesn't have to cry before going to sleep each time soon
  • That's great! I'm jealous!
