Has your baby dropped?

Hello!!
A few days ago I started to feel a LOT of pressure down low. The pressure was really uncomfortable when walking around. My peeing frequency increased dramatically! From normal ~5 times/day to every 1.5hours! Actually thought I had a UTI (but didn't).
Yesterday, the doc said my baby has dropped and I'm 0.5cm dilated. I'm 35wks. I'm starting to wonder if I might go into labor before my due date.
Has anyone else's baby dropped? If so, when did it happen? STMs- how long before birth did your first baby drop?

Re: Has your baby dropped?

  • My baby dropped head down at 30w and I'm already dilated to 2cm, 60% effaced and I'm only 33w now. Dr said LO could come early so I got steroid shots just incase or go she could go to term. I knew she dropped and was head down because the pressure your feeling is what changed for me and the pee breaks are definitely more frequent. I'm a FTM so idk how long after they flip down you'll go into labor but sounds like you still have a little bit more to go. Hopefully some STM can share their stories.

  • All my babies dropped weeks early, and I started dilating by 36 weeks with all 3. My first was born at 36 weeks probably from pre e, but my second kid I was dilated to 3 for two weeks before having him at 38w 4d. Baby is preparing for arrival, but these things don't necessarily mean they will come super early. This baby I felt drop weeks ago, but wasn't dilated last week. This week I'm at .5, at 36 weeks. Its totally normal, and although I'm hoping this means baby won't wait until his due date, I'm not worried he will be coming quite yet.
  • I don't think my baby was ever 'up' enough to drop! Go to the dr tomorrow and will have first internal so I am eager to see what they say and if there is any progress.

  • When does your OB check how dilated you are? I'm now 34 weeks and haven't been checked yet, my next appointment is when I'm 36 weeks.
  • I think that baby has also dropped, the pressure in between my legs is crazy. I have heard it described as it feels like you have a bowling ball between your legs and that is exactly what it feels like! I have an appt tomorrow and I'm pretty sure they are going to check me so I'm very curious to hear of anything is going on. I also have a growth us and depending on how big little man is we may end up scheduling an induction.

  • @terezakatarina my office starts cervical checks at 36weeks.

  • @Bookhousegirl ok great then I should expect it at my next appointment! What do they do exactly to check? Sorry FTM here
  • @terezakatarina basically the doctor reaches up there and feels your cervix. It is definitely uncomfortable - although more for some than others. 36 weeks is also when they do the Group B strep test which involves a cottonswab of your anus, so prepare yourself for that too. Lots of fun ;)

  • @Bookhousegirl  Oh my! hahah ok thank you for the head's up :)
  • @bookhousegirl thank you also for that heads up.  My doc is not very forthcoming in what is coming next.  Y'all are scaring me with the strep B and cervical checks.  Can't wait. HA!
  • I think I dropped last week since my bathroom breaks have increased. This pregnancy has felt heavier down there for awhile now. With my first DD I didn't drop at all and I was only dialated a finger tip 4 days before my water broke. I honestly don't think it is an indication of anything. My next appointment is two Monday's away so I am curious to see if I am dialated at all this time around.
  • @sbelle474... neither are that bad! Pain of cervical checks totally depends on where baby is, so it may feel different every time you have one. Strep b test is quick and non invasive
  • I stared feeling intense heaviness down low and some vaginal pain/ pressure yesterday. I go for my 34 week appt tomorrow and wonder if they will go ahead and do an internal exam when I tell the dr this.
  • Pretty sure this kiddo "dropped" on Monday. Before that things were uncomfortable down there only when she was moving, now it feels like a bowling ball is constantly about to fall out of me. And the bump looks totally different now too. I've go my 36 week checkup tomorrow, so we'll see what the doc says.
  • My boy dropped around 28-29 weeks. Bump looked totally different. Now at 33 weeks, I had an ultrasound yesterday and he was so low that the tech had a hard time getting a measurement of his head. Which is huge. Haha.
  • So what does it mean what baby has 'dropped'. I had an 35 week appointment yesterday and they checked me. no dilation and they said he was not in the pelvis. So if he is not in the pelvis, does that mean no droppage? He feels low to me!

  • STM here.  Apparently, with your first, your baby can drop weeks before you go into labor.  In subsequent pregnancies, it's more likely to happen when you're already in labor.

I will say with my first that I didn't "feel" baby drop, but I did have people tell me when it happened, I guess based on appearance.  I started dilating and effacing at about 35-36 weeks.  With this pregnancy, I feel like she has dropped or at least that she's definitely low in my pelvis.  I had a growth scan about 2 weeks ago and she was so low that it was hard for the tech to get a good head measurement on her.  I have been having some painful pelvic pressure, especially when I get up from sitting or laying too long.  They haven't checked me for any dilation yet and probably won't until my 36 week appointment.  I have only had mild contractions here and there.

  • Apparently my baby dropped.  I don't look any different but the baby is looooow.  I've been crampy and having backaches and at my 34w appt today the ultrasound tech confirmed how low the head is.
  • I had my 36 week appt yesterday and found I am 60 percent effaced and fingertip dilated  The OB was able to push his head when he examined me. Apparently the pelvic exams are not that great of indicators of when you will actually go into labor, because women can sit a couple cm dilated and effaced for weeks. It is exciting to know that the process is getting started, however. I definitely feel like his head is trying to push out of me sometimes when he stretches.
