Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby lead weaning query

My lo is 7 months and we have been doing blw for about 4 - 5 weeks now. For the last 3 days my lo has halved her milk intake is this normal? It's hard to tell just how much food she is eating on blw so not sure whether I should be worried. TIA

Re: Baby lead weaning query

  • What do you mean it's hard to tell how much food she's eating on BLW? I ask because we do BLW with my 9mo old, and I know exactly how many chunks of fruit I put in front of him and I know how many end up on the floor thus I know how much he ends up eating. One thing I read about offering infants under 1yo solid foods is to offer the food after you've breastfed or bottle-fed because breastmilk is still their main food intake and finger foods/purees are just for fun.  Maybe you could try milk first before foods?
  • Yes, always feed food after milk. If your LO has decreased her milk intake that much then back off of the food. It's only for practice right now anyways.

Agreed. Should def not be cutting milk intake in half yet. I know the amounts are different for everyone but as a gauge around 8-9 months should be around 30oz a day my ped said as they start to eat more food may go down to around 24oz.
  • What they say is true, but your LO could just be going through an adjustment period, too. I got calls from the daycare 4 days in a row because my LO was refusing her bottles. She went from her customary 3-4 at daycare to 2. It was like that there, and through the weekend. It then righted itself, and she's back to the normal schedule. I think she just was in a mid-growth lull. I wouldn't panic, but keep an eye on it, and see if it balances out.
  • When babies drink less, it could also be related to an ear infection.  Also, breastfed babies get a lot less than formula fed babies and the normal range is 25-35 oz a day so if you are breastfeeding and several months into introducing food, your baby may take less than 25 oz.  I would think as long as your baby is growing, you are ok.  In BLW, they say that babies know what they need.  As long as you are feeding on demand, you shouldn't worry about whether your LO is getting enough as if she is not, she will wake during the night to make up for it.
